Follow-Up of Post Septoplasty Complications in Children

As there is possibility to develop aesthetic or functional problems years later, untreated septal deviation in children should be corrected as early as possible. This retrospective study was done from medical records of 80 children who underwent Septoplasty in different medical college hospitals and clinics between January 2008 and January 2016. Among the subjects, 81.25% were male and 18.25% were female. The mean age (years) of the subjects was 10.5, ranged from 6-14. Considering the pattern of surgery, 37.5% of them had partial inferior turbinectomy, 11.25% had electrocautery, 33.75% had adenoidectomy and 37.5 % had myringotomy with grommet insertion. Post-surgical follow-up showed, 2.5% cases developed septal haematoma, 1.25% developed septal abscess, 6.25% synechia and 6.25% developed recurrence of septal deviation. Considering long term follow-up, none of them developed any nasal or facial deformity. From the study, it is mentionable that, nasal changes should be corrected in children, in order to provide harmonious growth and prevent severe sequelae found in mouth breathers.
