An exanthem is a widespread rash usually occurring in children. An exanthem can be caused by toxins, drugs, or microorganisms, or can result from autoimmune disease. It can be contrasted with an enanthem. The term is from Greek ἐξάνθημα exánthēma, 'a breaking out'.
