The Focusing Disc DIRC for the PANDA experiment at FAIR

The Focusing Disc DIRC is a novel detector concept for particle identification based on the detection of internally-reflected Cherenkov light. A thin synthetic silica disc of 1 m radius will be used as radiator and for light transportation. At the rim LiF bars are foreseen to passively correct for dispersion. Focusing elements map the angles of the propagating photons to spatial positions on the focal plane covered with position sensitive photon detection devices. This novel 2D(+1t) detector concept will contribute to the outstanding particle identification performance of the general purpose PANDA detector. The aims of the PANDA experiment are to address fundamental questions of the strong force, to explore the structure of the nucleon and to search for new matter. The technical design, the current status of the development and recent results from prototype test experiments for the Focusing Disc DIRC are presented.

Tests and developments of the PANDA Endcap Disc DIRC

The PANDA experiment at the future Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) requires excellent particle identification. Two different DIRC detectors will utilize internally reflected Cherenkov light of charged particles to enable the separation of pions and kaons up to momenta of 4 GeV/c. The Endcap Disc DIRC will be placed in the forward endcap of PANDA's central spectrometer covering polar angles between 5° and 22°. Its final design is based on MCP-PMTs for the photon detection and an optical system made of fused silica. A new prototype has been investigated during a test beam at CERN in May 2015 and first results will be presented. In addition a new synthetic fused silica material by Nikon has been tested and was found to be radiation hard.

Ray-optical transformation optics with ideal thin lenses makes omnidirectional lenses

We present the theory of ray-optical transformation optics (RTO) with ideal thin lenses and show that ideal-thin-lens RTO devices are omnidirectional lenses.Key to designing such devices are two theorems, the loop-imaging theorem, and the edge-imaging theorem, which ensure that the interior physical space is distorted in the same way for all viewing directions.We discuss the possibility of realising such devices using lens holograms or Fresnel lenses, as both are in principle capable of changing the directions of rays incident from a specific point precisely like an ideal thin lens, thereby enabling macroscopic and broad-band RTO devices that work for at least one viewing position.Even when restricted in this way, our work opens up new possibilities in ray optics.Our devices have the potential to form the basis of new microscope objectives, virtual-reality headsets, and medical spectacles.

Combinations of generalized lenses that satisfy the edge-imaging condition of transformation optics

We recently introduced the edge-imaging condition, a necessary condition for all generalized lenses (glenses) [ J. Opt. Soc. Am. A 33 , 962 ( 2016 ) JOAOD6 0740-3232 10.1364/JOSAA.33.000962 ] in a ray-optical transformation-optics (RTO) device that share a common edge [ Opt. Express 26 , 17872 ( 2018 ) OPEXFF 1094-4087 10.1364/OE.26.017872 ]. The edge-imaging condition states that, in combination, such glenses must image every point to itself. Here we begin the process of building up a library of combinations of glenses that satisfy the edge-imaging condition, starting with all relevant combinations of up to three glenses. As it grows, this library should become increasingly useful when constructing lens-based RTO devices.

On documentary sounds and images in the gallery

Cinema and broadcast television are no longer preeminent as modes of exhibition and consumption of moving-image and time-based works, while the gallery has long ceased to be the preserve of the still and silent image. Instead, other new forms have emerged along with the digital, such as YouTube and podcasts, while the mobile phone with its still and video camera creates audiovisual connectivity and interaction anytime and anywhere. Time-based works have become multiplatform, as filmmakers produce works for the gallery and web, and visual artists make works for the cinema, such as Turner Prize winner Steve McQueen's film Hunger, awarded the 2008 Cannes Caméra d'Or. The emergence in the 1960s of the term ‘time-based art’ itself marked the advent of moving images and sounds in the gallery as video art and distinct from avant-garde film. This incursion into the gallery brought the audiovisual into the place and space of ‘art’, thereby questioning the extent to which the experience of art arises not only in relation to the specificity of the medium of representation but also in relation to the site, the space and the duration of its presentation and viewing. The digital has transformed the medium specificity which had been central to video art as videotape viewable on a small monitor. But in its gallery exhibition the digital remains specific: for each place of viewing a time-based installation is not only a context – geographical and social, public or private – but also an architectural space, organizing the spectator's access to mobility and stillness.

New developments of the PANDA Disc DIRC detector

The DIRC principle (Detection of Internally Reflected Cherenkov light) allows a very compact approach for particle identification detectors. The PANDA detector at the future FAIR facility at GSI will use a Barrel-DIRC for the central region and a Disc DIRC for the forward angular region between 5◦ and 22◦ . It will be the first time that a Disc DIRC is used in a high performance 4π detector. To achieve this aim, different designs and technologies have been evaluated and tested. This article will focus on the mechanical design and integration of the Disc DIRC with respect to the PANDA environment.

Ideal-lens cloaks and new cloaking strategies

Previously [Courtial et al., Opt. Express 26, 17872 (2018)] we presented the theory of transformation optics (TO) with ideal lenses and demonstrated an example, an omnidirectional lens.Here we interpret this omnidirectional lens in two different parameter regimes as ideal-lens cloaks that employ different cloaking strategies: a standard "shrink cloak" in which objects appear smaller (ideally zero) and a novel "abyss cloak" in which interior physical-space positions are mapped to the exterior and thus are visible only from certain directions.We proceed to combine two nested abyss cloaks into another novel, omnidirectional, "bi-abyss cloak."Our work significantly extends the arsenal of cloaking strategies.
