Gamma-ray burst observations by the HEAO-3 high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometer

Observations of cosmic gamma‐ray bursts with the JPL High‐Resolution Gamma‐Ray Spectrometer on HEAO‐3 are discussed. Two bursts seen on 1979 November 16 are of particular interest. The first event occurred at 14:16:41 UT and lasted for eight seconds. This event was detected only by the instrument’s five CsI shield segments. The second event occurred 61 sec later, at 14:17:42 UT, and lasted 18 sec. This event was clearly detected by the high‐resolution germanium detectors. Because of the close temporal coincidence of the two events, we consider the possibility that both originated from one celestial source, and that the scanning motion of HEAO, 3 (nominal spin period 20 min) was such as to exclude the first from the (approximately 30° FWHM) field of view of the germanium detectors and include the second. Directional information from the relative response of the shield pieces and Earth occulation constraint are all consistent with this interpretation and high‐resolution spectral data from the second burst are discussed in this light.Recent unpublished analyses of long‐baseline timing data from interplanetary spacecraft show that the response in the HEAO high‐resolution detectors was probably Earth albedo scattering, which can be an important systematic effect in low‐Earth orbit.

Stellar occultation measurements of atmospheric ozone and chlorine from OAO 3

The Princeton University telescope on the Orbiting Astronomical Observatory 3 was used for occultation measurements of upper-atmospheric species. The target star, Beta Cen, and observing date were selected so that the line of sight grazed earth's limb at local midnight. Observations at 2580, 2825, 2997, 3100, and 3428 A produced ozone absorption data of high statistical accuracy between 48-km and 114-km tangent altitude. Near-exponential density profiles are obtained up to 85 km. Near 100 km, a significant density excess above the extrapolated low-altitude profile is observed. Near-equatorial observations at altitudes up to approximately 75 km agree well with theoretical calculations. Ozone densities measured at 6.5 to 12.5 deg S latitude above approximately 75 km exceed the theoretical calculations and are not understood at the present time. A search for the 1188-A chlorine line in the 1187-A O2 absorption feature was carried out at tangent altitudes of 96-116 km. An upper limit of 3 ppb to the atomic chlorine mixing ratio at 106 km is found. This upper limit exceeds the expected value for atomic chlorine by a factor of approximately 2.5.

A balloon-borne X-ray survey of the galactic plane in the region of the galactic center was made from Australia during December 1966. The photon events recorded by a detector composed of a krypton gas proportional counter and a cesium iodide scintillation crystal are used to determine the spectrum of hard X-rays from the vicinity of Sgr XR-1.

NASA plans for observations of SN1987A

The scientific aims and technological implementation of NASA observations of SN 1987A are outlined in a status report. Key questions to be answered involve nucleosynthesis and the light curves of type II SN; the multilayer structure of the progenitor and the SNR; circumstellar gas, shock-wave, and dust formation; and the evolution of the core remnant. Consideration is given to continued SMM, IUE, Voyager UVS, and DSN observations; future space missions such as GRO, AXAF, and Rosat; balloon-borne gamma-ray, rocket-borne X-ray, and airborne IR observations; and the Science Communications Network and Data Archive.

A High Resolution Position Sensitive Detector for Ultraviolet and X-Ray Photons

A new type of position sensitive detection system for ultraviolet and x-ray photons and for particles is described. A compact laboratory model with one-dimensional readout was constructed and tested. The full width at half maximum response to single x-rays was typically 0.13 mm, but the position determination accuracy was comparable to the channel center-to-center spacing of 0.053 mm. The detection system can be readily adapted to two-dimensional readout. Potential applications of this device for single-photon and flux counting in ultraviolet and x-ray astronomy are discussed.

Astrophysics science operations - Near-term plans and vision

Astrophysics science operations planned by the Science Operations branch of NASA Astrophysics Division for the 1990s for the purpose of gathering spaceborne astronomical data are described. The paper describes the near-future plans of the Science Operations in the areas of the preparation of the proposal; the planning and execution of spaceborne observations; the collection, processing, and analysis data; and the dissemination of results. Also presented are concepts planned for introduction at the beginning of the 20th century, including the concepts of open communications, transparent instrument and observatory operations, a spiral requirements development method, and an automated research assistant.
