Refused derived fuel pellets from municipal solid waste and rice husk

The objective of this study was to optimize the parameters for the development of refused derived fuel (RDF) pellets from municipal solid waste (MSW) and rice husk by using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). In this a systematic study was conducted, where three parameters were varied according to RSM factorial design. The binder concentration (5-10%) pressure (700-1200 psi) and retention time (3-7 minutes) were used for RDF pellet development under hydraulic press, measured hardness bulk density (BD) and durability (DU). The T3 treatment results revealed the highest pellet hardness, bulk density, and durability 25 kg, 805 kg/m3, 99% respectively by application binder concentration (5%), pressure (1200 psi) and retention time (5 minutes). The experimental data on response variables were fitted into quadratic polynomial model using the multiple regression analysis and found that it was statistically significant quadratic model. The RDF physical chemical and mechanical characteristics were also evaluated and found their relationship between HHV, carbon, ash, DU, BD and energy density. Assessing the environmental impacts of reclaimed and conventional water in hydroponics based on a life cycle assessment approach

ABSTRACT As the global population approaches 9 billion by 2050, challenges of food and water scarcity intensify. Hydroponics, an innovative and eco-friendly technology, has gained prominence in addressing these challenges. This study employs Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to comprehensively evaluate the environmental and economic impacts of utilizing reclaimed water in a hydroponic system. Results from midpoint, endpoint, and normalized analyses reveal key contributors to the hydroponic system's environmental burden, including water, substrates, fertilizers, and energy sources. Significant impacts have been observed in marine and terrestrial ecotoxicity, as well as photochemical ozone formation. Reclaimed water consistently demonstrates lower environmental impacts compared to conventional water across various indicators, such as climate change (131 kg CO2 eq.), fine particulate matter formation (0.108 kg PM2.5 eq.), and freshwater consumption (0.291 cubic meters). The study emphasizes the potential of hydroponics with reclaimed water to offer sustainable and environmentally friendly agricultural practices. The detailed LCA results provide valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders, promoting the adoption of hydroponics to address food and water scarcity challenges. From the findings, reclaimed water in hydroponics lowers the environmental impacts as compared to conventional water and PVC (Polyvinyl chloride) along with electricity is the major contributor in environmental burden.

Education have great deal of importance in every aspect of life, thus, this study deals with its one foremost aspect by investigating the impact of higher education on women’s social status. The social status of working women was examined by women’s perception about their decision-making participation at the household level in Lahore. The social impact of higher education was evaluated based on positivist philosophy and implantation of survey approach. Primary data have been collected using self-administered questionnaire. A sample of 120 women respondents studying and teaching at National College of Business Administration & Economics was collected using the simple random technique. A Chi-square test of homogeneity was applied to see whether the difference in the proportion of opinion responses. The study found that highly educated women were more socially empowered than the less educated women and actively participate in familial related decision makings.

Impact of process parameters on refused derived fuel pellets

The objective of present study was to optimize the process conditions for the development of refused derived fuel (RDF) pellets from municipal solid waste (MSW) and biomass by using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The three factors specifically moisture (20-45%), preheating temperature (50-120˚C) and pressure (500-1500 psi) were taken as center point. The experimental data of response variables were fitted into quadratic polynomial model using the multiple regression analysis and found it was statistically significant quadratic model and contour plot further revealed that moisture (20%), preheating temperature (120˚C) and hydraulic pressure (1000psi) were the best conditions. Moreover bulk density and durability of pellets increased due to temperature and pressure but decrease with moisture. The bulk density (BD) moisture durability (DU) size diameter carbon hydrogen sulpher chloride ash fixed carbon HHV (High heating value) LHV (Low heating value) and ash metal were also evaluated.
