Cervical cytology screening in Calcutta and adjoining areas with special reference to carcinoma of the uterine cervix.

A total of 1232 female subjects including 100 prostitutes from Calcutta and adjoining areas in the age group of 21-70 years were screened for cervical pathology according to the method of Papanicolaou. Of 1232 examined, 815 were found to have smears with normal cellular cytology (66.15%). The others were grouped into dysplasia (18.4%) and inflammatory (15.4%) according to the cytomorphological characteristics of the exfoliated cells. The findings though revealed more cases of cervical dysplasia in women with early marriage, early childbirth, high parity and multiple sexual partners, it failed to support the smegma theory of cervical carcinoma. This study also showed a number of inflammatory cervical smears in women coming from low socio-economic group.

Carcinoma of the uterine cervix is the commonest tumour in India. Our study on the biological behaviour of cervical carcinoma was made with respect to oncofetoprotein expression, histopathology and scanning electron microscopy. A clinical picture was compared with the above three parameters to note the embryonic degeneration of the tumour. The objective of this study was to establish a new grading system of tumour pathology which might be an adjunct to clinical staging. This should be helpful for the formulation of different treatment protocols.

Barriers leading to treatment delay in breast cancer patients: A demographic survey in speciality government hospital at Kolkata

Background: Breast cancer is the most common cause of mortality among women not just worldwide but also in India.The estimated number of incidence of breast cancer cases in India in 2016 was 118 000 and there has been surge in the disease across the states of India and is the leading cancer killer in Indian females.Objective: Unawareness being the criterion for delayed diagnosis and the treatment, the present investigations was carried out to understand the other factors that hinder the process of late diagnosis and treatment.Methods: This study was carried out in a well-known cancer care hospital-Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute (CNCI) Kolkata, West Bengal, and is one of the 25 Regional Cancer Centres in India.After interview and questionnaire, the data were collected and analyzed.Results: About 1324 patients, both indoor and outdoor patients from rural and urban areas were included in the study.The age of the study participants was ranged between 16 and >75 years.Most of them were not only unaware of breast carcinoma, but suffered from financial constrains, psychological barring, lack of proper infrastructure for diagnosis and treatment in rural areas.Conclusion: This study concluded that the awareness of the breast, alone is not the utmost important for early detection and in reduction of mortality, but also lack of proper infrastructure for diagnosing and treatment in rural, financial constrains also contributes to late detection.

Association of haemangiopericytoma and urticaria

This is a report of oral haemangiopericytoma with urticaria in an infant indicating a previously unrecognized association. The urticarial eruptions cleared after the initiation of chemotherapy for the primary oral lesion and reappeared extensively with cutaneous metastasis after the malignant growth became resistant to treatment.

The document is based on consensus among the experts and best available evidence pertaining to Indian population and is meant for practice in India.All postcholecystectomy gallbladder specimens should be opened and examined carefully by the operating surgeon and be sent for histopathological examination.All "incidental" gall bladder cancers (GBCs) picked up on histopathological examination should have an expert opinion.Evaluation of a patient with early GBC should include essential tests: A computed tomography (CT) scan (multi-detector or helical) of the abdomen and pelvis for staging with a CT chest or chest X-ray, and complete blood counts, renal and liver function tests. magnetic resonance imaging/positron emission tomography (PET)-CT are not recommended for all patients.For early stage disease (up to Stage IVA), surgery is recommended. The need for adjuvant treatment would be guided by the histopathological analysis of the resected specimen.Patients with Stage IVB/metastatic disease must be assessed for palliative e.g. endoscopic or radiological intervention, chemotherapy versus best supportive care on an individual basis. These patients do not require extensive workup outside of a clinical trial setting.There is an urgent need for multicenter trials from India covering various aspects of epidemiology (viz., identification of population at high-risk, organized follow-up), clinical management (viz., bile spill during surgery, excision of all port sites, adjuvant/neoadjuvant therapy) and basic research (viz., what causes GBC).
