✓ In vitro experiments were performed using a small volume chamber to determine the contractile activity of various vasoactive agents on the canine basilar and middle cerebral arteries. Cumulative dose-response curves were obtained for most of the agents tested including serotonin and three different prostaglandins; many of these curves were found to be similar for segments from both arteries. It was concluded from these curves, and the known concentrations in blood, that serotonin is probably the agent in blood responsible for the cerebral arterial spasm that often follows a subarachnoid hemorrhage. This in vitro method is capable of detecting serotonin concentrations as low as 10 −12 gm/ml and may prove useful as a quantitative and well-controlled method for studying the etiology of spasm and the receptor mechanisms present in the cerebral arteries.

The Use of Methyl Methacrylate in a Two-Stage Correction of Crouzonʼs/Apertʼs Deformity

We have employed a two-stage operative approach to the correction of Crouzon's/Apert's deformity. Extensive use of methyl methacrylate in cranioplasty and frontal bone advancement is employed to obtain finely detailed contours with excellent stability. By adhering to principles of separation of oral contamination and the methyl methacrylate, as well as the provision of adequate soft tissue coverage of the methyl methacrylate, the problems of infection and soft tissue breakdown can be minimized.

Neuroschisis of the Cervical Spinal Cord in a Patient with Klippel-Feil Syndrome

During the neurological work-up of a young patient with Klippel-Feil syndrome, the presence of a neuroschisis of the cervical spinal cord was detected. The patient presented with a transient and acute hemisensory loss and a Horner's syndrome of the opposite side. The unusual presentation and radiological findings in a patient with Klippel-Feil syndrome prompted this report.

Subdural hematoma as a complication of shunting procedures for normal pressure hydrocephalus

✓ The authors report five patients with normal-pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) who developed subdural hematomas following shunt procedures. None of the hematomas was directly related to surgery, and all appeared after the patients had shown initial clinical improvement; one was conceivably related to trauma. These patients appear to be especially susceptible to this complication, as the high incidence of 5 of 24 cases is not seen in the treatment of high-pressure hydrocephalus. The symptoms and signs of this complication, diagnosis, and treatment are described and emphasized. It is concluded that shunting procedures for NPH should not be undertaken lightly, and rigid criteria should be applied in the selection of patients to exclude other causes of dementia.
