"Towards 100 TW -10 Hz titanium-sapphire laser facilities: The European FIRE project"

Experimental ultra-intense light-matter interaction has now reached the level of petawatt powers using large-aperture Nd.glass laser systems [1], even if only at high costs per shot and very low repetition rates. If, on the other hand, ultra-high field strength and repetition rate is of more concern than maximum pulse energy, as is typical for basic research in many non-fusion user facilities, titanium-sapphire (Ti:Sa) appears to be the most advanced laser medium.

Abstract Ultraintensive Laser sind heutzutage in der Lage, Intensitäten über 10 18 W/cm 2 zu erzeugen. Die kinematischen Kräfte derart starker Lichtfelder ermöglichen es, zum Beispiel in Plasmen in neue Bereiche von Druck und Temperatur vorzustoßen. Potentielle Anwendungen liegen in der Erzeugung von extrem kurzen und intensiven Röntgen‐Impulsen.

Energetic beams of negative and neutral hydrogen from intense laser plasma interaction

We present observations of intense beams of energetic negative hydrogen ions and fast neutral hydrogen atoms in intense (5 × 1019 W/cm2) laser plasma interaction experiments, which were quantified in numerical calculations. Generation of negative ions and neutral atoms is ascribed to the processes of electron capture and loss by a laser accelerated positive ion in the collisions with a cloud of droplets. A comparison with a numerical model of charge exchange processes provides information on the cross section of the electron capture in the high energy domain.

Compact, high-repetition rate, ultrashort hard-x-ray source driven by femtosecond laser pulses

Summary form only given. An alternative way to generate ultrashort hard-x-rays is to use low-intensity femtosecond laser pulses in combination with a specially designed "x-ray tube". The femtosecond laser pulses induce photoemission of electrons from a photocathode. The electron bunch is then accelerated towards a high-Z target material by applying an external high-voltage electric field. Hard-x-rays are produced by bremsstrahlung of accelerated electrons and characteristic line emission. In contrast to the existing laser-plasma x-ray sources which require high-power laser systems, for the realization of this novel x-ray source, low-energy, compact, high-repetition rate, commercially available femtosecond lasers can be used. In this presentation we report on our progress in the development and investigation of a femtosecond laser-driven x-ray tube. We demonstrate the influence of relevant parameters (e.g. laser fluence, wavelength, accelerating voltage) on the electron and hard-x-ray generation efficiency using different photocathode and x-ray target materials. The laser-driven hard-x-ray source is characterized in terms of brilliance, spectral properties, and pulse duration. The latter is performed using an ultrafast x-ray streak camera in combination with a laser-triggered accumulation system.

Generation and manipulation of proton beams by ultra-short laser pulses

Applying a 21‐channel Thomson spectrometer setup has revealed further insight to the connection between spatial and spectral beam characteristic of laser accelerated protons. Analyzing the central emission cone (plus/minus 3 degree) shows an increasing beam divergency for protons with increasing kinetic energies. This holds for protons emitted from the same source area at the target surface. The whole beam is a well ordered system with a clear functional dependence of trajectories on proton energy. This is a consequence of the source dynamics which is determined by the sheath development in time. Thus laser‐driven ion beams can be advantageously manipulated for further propagation to an experiment. We demonstrate this capability with a magnetic quadrupole and obtain a nearly parallel and monochromatized beam. Furthermore we set our achievements in beam production efficiency into context with other laser systems and demonstrate the potential of very‐thin target foils.

<title>Temporal and far-field characterization of the transient Ni-like Ag x-ray laser under traveling-wave irradiation</title>

This paper summarizes our recent progress achieved in the characterization and understanding of the Ni-like Ag transient x-ray laser pumped under traveling wave irradiation. At the Rutherford Laboratory CPA laser facility, we measured the temporal history of the 13.9 nm laser pulse with a high-resolution streak camera. A very short, approximately 2 ps x-ray laser pulse was directly demonstrated for the first time. More recently we carried out an experiment at the LULI CPA laser facility. Several diagnostics that recorded the plasma emission at the XRL wavelength or in the keV range indicate the presence of small-scale spatial structures in the emitting XRL source. Single-shot Fresnel interferograms at 13.9 nm were successfully obtained with a good fringe visibility. Strong lasing was also observed on the Ni-like 4f-4d line at 16 nm.

Neutron energy spectra from the laser-inducedD(d,n)3Hereaction

Detailed neutron energy spectra were measured for the D(d,n)3He reaction induced in solid (CD2)(n) targets by irradiation with 50-fs 2 x 10(18) W/cm(2) light pulses from a 10-TW Ti:Sapphire laser. The neutrons were observed at two angles 5 degrees and 112 degrees relative to the incident laser beam. The neutron spectra at the two angles are characterized by peaks with large widths of about 700 keV full width at half maximum and a shift of 300 keV between them. Neutron energies of up to about 4 MeV were observed indicating that deuterons are accelerated up to an energy of 1 MeV in the laser produced plasma. Simulation calculations can describe qualitatively the neutron spectra by assuming isotropic deuteron acceleration and a reduction of the reaction probability by a factor of 1/3 for deuterons emitted from the front of the target. These calculations indicate in particular that it is necessary to assume deuterons moving both into and out of the front of the target in order to describe the neutron energy spectra at the two angles. The highest recorded mean neutron yield was about 10(4) neutrons per pulse. The neutron yield increases with the number of electrons emitted from the front of the target and with the intensity of the prompt gamma flash induced by the bremsstrahlung of energetic electrons.

Transverse spatial coherence of a transient nickellike silver soft-x-ray laser pumped by a single picosecond laser pulse

The degree of spatial coherence in the direction perpendicular to the target surface is reported for a transient nickellike silver x-ray laser at 13.9 nm. An x-ray laser plasma column was produced by irradiating a slab silver target with a single shaped picosecond laser pulse with energy less than 3 J. Young's double-slit method was applied to measure the fringe visibility as a function of the slit separation for different target lengths. The diameter of the equivalent incoherent source and the coherence radius of the output radiation were determined as well.
