Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is the most important food legume for human consumption worldwide and especially in Latin America and Africa, but low soil phosphorus (P) availability limits grain production in these areas. For these reason eighty five recombinant inbred lines (RILs) of BAT 477 x DOR 364 and twenty commercial bean genotypes were sown in plots in an Acrisol soil with low P availability to evaluate nine root traits and grain yield. The study was carried out in Pinar del Rio province in Cuba between November 2006 and February 2009. The plots received basal fertilization (N and K) and P fertilization between 15 and 90 kg P2O5 ha-1. Ten plants were
sampled from each plot at R6 pod fill to evaluate root traits and shoot biomass, and at R9 physiological maturity to estimate grain yield. The 85 RILs showed great variability for root traits, grain yield and P stress tolerance calculated as relative grain yield. The commercial bean lines also showed large diversity in yield parameters. Principal Component Analysis showed that there were high and significant correlations between root traits (basal root number, primary root depth, adventitious root length and adventitious root number) and grain yield parameters (grain yield at 15 P level and relative grain yields). Adventitious root traits showed the greatest correlation with yield under low P. Promising RILs included 75.1.1, 60.1.1, 38.1.1, 14.1.1 and 38.1.1 and promising commercial bean
lines included ICA Pijao, BAT 482, ICA 23, BAT 24 and BAT 832.
Compartment syndrome is a critical condition characterized by elevated pressures within constricted myofascial compartments, leading to vascular compromise, hypoxia, and potential irreversible injury. While commonly affecting the forearm and lower leg, compartment syndrome of the hand is rare and poses unique diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. The pathophysiology involves increased intracompartmental pressure from various etiologies, such as trauma, edema, or external compression, culminating in a cycle of ischemia and worsening edema. Rhabdomyolysis, defined by rapid muscle tissue degradation and release of intracellular components into the bloodstream, is intricately linked to compartment syndrome, with each condition potentially exacerbating the other. Elevated serum creatine kinase and myoglobin levels are hallmark diagnostic markers of rhabdomyolysis. Hand compartment syndrome, despite its rarity, necessitates prompt identification and surgical intervention. The hand's complex anatomical structure comprises ten compartments, each at risk for ischemic injury under increased pressure. Clinically, hand compartment syndrome manifests as severe pain disproportionate to injury, edema, and abnormal posturing. Diagnosis relies on clinical suspicion, supported by intracompartmental pressure monitoring. Emergent fasciotomy remains the definitive treatment, requiring multiple incisions to decompress affected compartments. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is valuable for assessing tissue damage and guiding management strategies. This review underscores the importance of early recognition and timely intervention in compartment syndrome and highlights the interdependent relationship between compartment syndrome and rhabdomyolysis.
Because of the importance of the cocuy (Agave cocui Trelease) crop in the arid zone of the occident of Venezuela, we evaluated the effect of ammonium nitrate (0, 0.5 and 1 g.L -1 ) on their development in nursery stage. The plant material was collected in Bobare, Lara state. Variables evaluated: number of leaves, lateral range, shoot and root fresh weight, root number and maximum
