Layer-dependent laser sputtering of BaF2 (111)

Laser-induced sputtering from the (111) surface of BaF2 was investigated under ultrahigh vacuum conditions, applying fluences well below the macroscopic damage threshold. Measurement of the wavelength-dependent desorption of Ba+ indicates that Ba+ is emitted from two chemically different surroundings at the surface. For a fixed wavelength, the emission rates of Ba+ and F+ as functions of time show a distinct anticorrelation, confirming the existence of two different chemical states of the surface, and suggesting that the sputtering takes place layer by layer.

NUCLEAR G-FACTOR OF THE 113 kev ROTATIONAL STATE IN THE ODD A NUCLEUS Hf$sup 17$$sup 7$

The shift of the 208 kev- 113 kev angular correlation in Hf/sup 117/ is measured in external magnetic fields of 53,100 and 29,200 gauss. With a half- life of (0.52 plus or minus 0.02) nsec for the 115-kev state this shift leads to a g-factor of +0.232 plus or minus 0.013. An investigation of the internal perturbation by varying the viscosity of the source yields that the perturbation, if present, is smaller than 2%. The result is discussed in terms of the unified model. (auth)

The ultrafast magnetization dynamics of thin Ni and Co films on Cu(001) and of polycrystalline Ni surfaces was studied by pump-probe reflection second-harmonic generation, utilizing 150 fs/800 nm laser pulses. In all cases no delay between electron excitation and magnetization breakdown was observed within the experimental time resolution. An upper limit of such delay is 50 fs in case of bulk Ni surfaces. The recovery of magnetization follows the electron temperature relaxation during the first few picoseconds and thereafter cooling by regular thermal diffusion.
