Optimal Condition for Suppressing Gain Dispersion Effects in Dissipative Soliton Generation

Gain dispersion impedes the generation of ultrashort dissipative solitons, especially in mode-locked lasers, by limiting the transform-limited pulse width and causing instability near zero dispersion. We have found a hyper-surface in the parameter space of a mode-locked laser for the best suppression of the gain dispersion effects. This is achieved by analyzing the proximity of a dissipative soliton to the stationary solution of the complex cubic-quintic Ginzburg–Landau equation in the absence of gain dispersion with the method of moments. Theoretical and experimental investigations show that the combinations of system parameters in a specific region near the hyper-surface allow for a dissipative soliton width that is very close to the minimum value, as well as a large stable mode-locking region at anomalous group delay dispersion. These findings provide new insights into ultrashort dissipative soliton generation and help to optimize mode-locked lasers with dispersion, nonlinearity, loss, and gain all taken into account simultaneously.

SafeCross: Helping Elder People Cross the Road Timely Using Thermal Imaging and Image Recognition

Some older adults face challenges of cross the road in time due to reduced mobility and declining sensory abilities. Existing technologies have limitations in accurately identifying pedestrians. We propose SafeCross, a novel system that combines image recognition and thermal imaging technology based on the FLIR TrafiOne 156 sensor, which accurately detects elderly individuals at road intersections in low visibility or obstructed conditions and implement traffic light control based on the algorithm provided by SafeCross. Our findings demonstrate the potential of SafeCross system ensures safety for older adults at intersections, Making a significant contribution to reducing the accident rate among the elderly.

Femtosecond Laser Assisted Chemical Ionization Mass Spectrometry: Toward Sub-ppq Detection Limits for Organic Molecules

Ultrasensitive analysis of organic molecules is crucial for various fundamental research and applications. State-of-the-art techniques for this purpose can achieve detection limits of several hundred ppq (parts-per-quadrillion), while a higher sensitivity is pursued constantly. To achieve this goal, we develop femtosecond laser assisted chemical ionization for mass spectrometry. This technique combines the advantages of femtosecond laser ionization and chemical ionization, either of which enables subppt (parts-per-trillion) mass spectrometry analysis of organic molecules. The results demonstrate that the developed ionization technique, when employed in mass spectrometry, can surpass femtosecond laser ionization by more than 3 orders of magnitude in sensitivity, while still maintaining good versatility and the ability to work under ambient conditions. This work paves the way for subppq analysis of organic molecules in gas phase and even in ambient environments, which can open up new research fields for trace substance analysis in atmospheric environment, clinical diagnosis, biomedical studies, etc.
