Isolation, purification and quantification of phenolic glycolipid-1 from human leprosy skin tissues

Phenolic glycolipid-I, a marker lipid of Mycobacterium leprae, was isolated from skin biopsies obtained from untreated lepromatous leprosy patients by silicic acid and florisil column chromatography and purified by thin layer chromatography. Tissues with varying bacillary loads were analysed for their phenolic glycolipid content. A good correlation was observed between the bacillary population of the tissues and the phenolic glycolipid content.

Automatic rain sensing Wiper and Headlight control in the vehicle

Wiper is an essential component that used to wipe raindrops or any water from the vehicle’s windscreen and Head light is used to safety purpose during night. The previous system used to activate the wiper manually and the process of pulling up the wiper is difficult to be handled and now a days the headlight also glows in a day time. This day time AHO reduce the vehicle mileage. Thus, this method is planned to unravel these issues. The objectives of this project are to upgrade the older cars system by providing automatic wiping and headlight system , to improve the system by using sensor with actuator and to style a basic program that may totally operate with the system. The thought of this planned wiper system is comparable with alternative existing standard wiper. In spite of removing water from windscreen, this system also will be upgraded to an automatic control system by using a arduino UNO, rain detecting and intensity sensor, fog sensor and day night sensor.

Detection of mycobacterial lipids in skin biopsies from leprosy patients

Lipids were extracted from small skin biopsies obtained from 5 lepromatous leprosy patients by employing a procedure designed to produce separate non-polar and polar fractions. The defatted tissue was subjected to alkaline hydrolysis and the total fatty acids in the hydrolysate were converted to methyl esters by a phase transfer reaction using iodomethane. The composition of free lipids and methyl esters of fatty acids was analysed by special thin-layer chromatographic systems. The presence of dimycocerosates of phthiocerol A, phthiocerol B and phthiodiolone A, phenolic glycolipid-I, two phosphatidyl inositol mannosides and 2 mycolates − alpha- and keto-mycolate − was demonstrated using reference lipid samples.

A patient of lepromatous leprosy, who received a high dose of clofazimine as part of multidrug therapy, for chronic erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL) had frequent 'haemoptysis'. The haemoptysis was later found to be due to expectoration of clofazimine. This interesting, and perhaps first case of such an occurrence, is reported.

Serum protein bound fucose (PBF) in untreated leprosy patients.

Protein-Bound Fucose (PBF) content in sera from normal persons and untreated lepromatous or near lepromatous leprosy patients was measured and statistically analysed. Normal serum gave a mean value of 8.15 +/- 2.7 mg% and the sera of leprosy patients gave a value of 13.3 +/- 3.38%. The fucose contents in the glycoprotein and mucoprotein fractions were determined and found to increase in untreated leprosy patients. The values for ratio of fucose to protein also were found to be high in the sera of patients studied.
