Simulation on Solidifying Behavior in Huge Rectangular Ingot by Water Cooling

In this paper,a special method of water cooling has been presented and applied to a designed 80 t ingot(4 200 mm×1 100 mm×2 600 mm).The casting and solidifying behavior have been simulated.The solidifying are compared in water cooling and air cooling.Mathematical simulation results tell us that by water cooling,solidified area is at lower edge and corner of the ingot,and the solidification time of the 1 100 mm rectangular ingot is only 1/4 compare with air cooling,internal soundness can be ensured also.The water cooling process can obviously improve microstructure.

Research on the Design of Fluoride‐Free Continuous Casting Mold Flux System for High‐Aluminum Steel

To get rid of the restrictions imposed by the components of the original mold flux and minimize fluorides to the largest extent, this article has designed the continuous casting mold flux for high‐aluminum steel with an aluminum content of 1.35% and tested the performance manifestations of the mold flux by integrating equipment like a rotational viscometer, S/DHTT‐TA‐III thermal analyzer, and X‐ray diffraction. The composition of the continuous casting mold flux for high‐aluminum steel is: CaO = 23–43 wt%, SiO 2 = 12–25 wt%, Al 2 O 3 = 14–26 wt%, B 2 O 3 = 13–17 wt%, and Li 2 O = 4–8 wt%. The newly designed mold flux has a lower melting temperature and its performance still satisfies the conditions for continuous casting after the reaction. The crystallization process of the on‐site using mold flux lasts 198 s, with the precipitated phases being Na 2 CaSiO 4 and Ca 3 Si 2 O 7 . The crystallization process of the newly designed mold flux lasts ≈324 s, with the precipitated phase mainly being LiAlO 2 , and the mold flux can maintain a low viscosity and a relatively thick liquid slag layer for a longer period of time.

Refining Mechanism of the Tin-Bismuth Alloy Solidified Structure Upon Applying Direct Current Outside the Mold

Herein, the effect of direct current (DC) outside the mold on refining the microstructure and alleviating the central segregation of a Tin-Bismuth (Sn-10 wt.% Bi) alloy ingot during the solidification process has been investigated. The experiment used a self-made device, which can achieve the effect of refining the solidified structure and alleviate the segregation of the metal casting. Numerical simulations were performed to calculate the Lorentz force, Joule heating, and induced melt vortex flow for the magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) case. Our results show that the maximum velocity of the global electro-vortex reached 0.017 m s–1. The DC-induced electro-vortex was found to be the primary reason of refining the equiaxed grain and alleviating the segregation of the β-Sn crystal boundary. The grain refining effect observed in these experiments can be solely attributed to the forced melt flow driven by the Lorentz force. DC field outside the mold can lead to grain refinement and alleviate the segregation of the ingot via a global vortex. The technology can be applied not only to opened molds, but also toward improving the quality in closed molds.

Study on feasibility of ironmaking process with MOE method

MOE method is adopted to process the iron concentrate powder.The theoretical decomposition voltage,consumption of iron concentrate powder,and the quantity of CaO and iron slag are analyzed,the power consumption of ironmaking process with MOE method is compared with that of blast furnace ironmaking process.The results indicate that the anode only has the reduction of Fe3+ iron ion during the electrolysis process,therefore the pure iron with no carbon can not be obtained.MOE method needs the process of slag discharge and adding CaO to keep the system alkalinity at 1.1.According to the kinetics method,the consumption of pure electrolysis ironmaking is 310.67 kg/t standard coal,which is much lower than the power consumption of traditional blast furnace ironmaking process.
