FIRST SECTION OF A 352 MHz PROTOTYPE ALVAREZ DTL TANK FOR THE CERN SPL

In the Linac4/SPL projects at CERN, 352 MHz DTL Alvarez accelerating structures will be used to accelerate protons between 3 and 40 MeV. The R&D for the development of a prototype structure for the energy range from 3 to 10 MeV is taking place jointly at ITEP and VNIIEF. The design of this 2.7 m Alvarez tank containing 27 drift tubes is described in this document. Results of calculations of the section parameters are presented. One of the main features of the design is the use of permanent magnets made of SmCo5 alloy as quadrupole focusing lenses (PMQ) inside the drift tubes. Details of the experimental PMQ-equipped drift tube are described.

Molecular ion sources for low energy semiconductor ion implantation (invited)

Smaller semiconductors require shallow, low energy ion implantation, resulting space charge effects, which reduced beam currents and production rates. To increase production rates, molecular ions are used. Boron and phosphorous (or arsenic) implantation is needed for P-type and N-type semiconductors, respectively. Carborane, which is the most stable molecular boron ion leaves unacceptable carbon residue on extraction grids. A self-cleaning carborane acid compound (C4H12B10O4) was synthesized and utilized in the ITEP Bernas ion source resulting in large carborane ion output, without carbon residue. Pure gaseous processes are desired to enable rapid switch among ion species. Molecular phosphorous was generated by introducing phosphine in dissociators via 4PH3 = P4 + 6H2; generated molecular phosphorous in a pure gaseous process was then injected into the HCEI Calutron-Bernas ion source, from which P4+ ion beams were extracted. Results from devices and some additional concepts are described.

Efficiency of ion focusing by the field of a travelling wave in a linear accelerator

An analysis of the efficiency of a linear ion accelerator with focusing produced by the field of travelling wave is carried out. The conditions for longitudinal and transverse stability of the ions are derived, the region of phase stability and the acceleration rate are found, and the limiting current is also estimated. It is shown that in such an accelerator (in the 2-me range) one can accelerate a rather large group of ions. Focusing by the field of a travelling wave has several interesting features and can be used in linear accelerators of heavy ions.

MULTI-CELL RF DEFLECTING SYSTEM FOR FORMATION OF HOLLOW HIGH ENERGY HEAVY ION BEAM

Terra Watt Accumulator project (ITEP-TWAC) aims for accumulation of an intense ion beam, up to 10 ppp and accelerated up to 0.7 GeV/u, in a storage ring for experiments on heavy ion beam-plasma interaction. For advanced experiments on high energy density physics the hollow cylindrical target is needed. A new method for RF rotation of the ion beam is applied for reliable formation of the hollow cylindrical beam. A principle of fast beam rotation by using a system of the multi-cell RF deflectors is considered in this paper. A four-cell H-mode deflecting cavity operating at the frequency of 297 MHz has been developed; similar 1.5 m long cavities being applied for both xand ydirections. The shape of the deflecting electrodes has been optimized in order to provide the uniform deflection over the whole aperture taking into account both electric and magnetic components of the RF field. A deflecting system and a focusing quadrupole triplet applied to the beam with the energy of 450 MeV/u and normalized transverse emittance of 10*pi mrad*mm may form the quasi-hollow configuration with the inner radius up to 1.5 mm and thickness of 1 mm

Electro-Dynamics Characteristics of RF Wobbler Cell for Heavy Ion Beam

Intense heavy ion beam is very efficient tool to generate high energy density states in macroscopic amounts of matter. As result it enables unique methods to study astrophysical processes in the laboratory under controlled and reproducible conditions. For advanced experiments on high energy density physics the cylindrical target irradiated by hollow cylindrical beam is required. This combination provides extremely high densities and pressures on the axis of imploding cylinder [1-3]. A new method for RF rotation of the ion beam is applied for required hollow beam formation. The RF system consisting of two four-cell H-mode cavities is under development for this purpose now. The cavities frequency has been chosen 297 MHz, which is sufficient for uniform target illumination at 100 ns pulse duration [4]. The deflecting electrodes shape has been optimized to provide the uniform deflection of all particles in beam’s cross-section [5, 6]. The prototype of the deflector cell was constructed. A measured electro-dynamic characteristics are presented. As well frequency corrections methods are considered in this paper.

Status of the 36 MHz linac cavities for the GSI high current injector

The new 1.4 MeV/u prestripper linac at GSI will provide intense ion beams to fill the synchrotron SIS to the space charge limit for all elements up to uranium. The design mass to charge ratio A/q is 65, the effective acceleration voltage of the 30 m long linac is up to 91 MV. The design beam current in emA is 0.25/spl middot/A/q, i.e. 15 mA of U/sup 4+/. This linac will replace the 27 MHz Unilac Wideroe section which was designed for A/q-values below 24. All cavities of the new linac are operated in the H/sub 110/-mode. The 9.2 m long IH-RFQ with an energy profile from 2.2 keV/u to 120 keV/u has been completed and RF tuned. RF power tests were performed successfully on 2 out of 10 tank modules. The drift tube linac consists of two 42 MV IH cavities. The 'Combined Zero Degree Structure' KONUS allows to accelerate the beam by a total number of 99 gaps with only 5 quadrupole triplet lenses for transverse focusing. The experience from the construction and from the RF tuning of all cavities is reported as well as the measured quality and shunt impedance values. The running in of the new prestripper linac is scheduled from April to September 1999.
