INOCULATION OF APRICOT SEEDLINGS WITH INDIGENOUS ARBUSCULAR MYCORRHIZAL FUNGI IN OPTIMUM PHOSPHORUS FERTILIZATION FOR QUALITY GROWTH ATTRIBUTES

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, namely Glomus fasciculatum (Thaxter) Gerdemann & Trappe,G. mosseae (Nicol. & Gerd.) Gerdemann & Trappe, G. macrocarpum (Tul. & Tul.) and Sclerocystis dussii (Almeida and Schenck), were screened at nursery stage to apricot seedlings (Prunus armeniaca L.) cv. 'New Castle' to evaluate the performance on different vegetative growth parameters at 0, 25, 50 and 100 mg kg−1 levels of P fertilization in soil. To select the most effective AM fungal species in promoting the growth, the seedlings were grown in pots under controlled atmospheric conditions for a period of six months. The data were recorded on AM fungal spore count and colonization; plant height, stem diameter, dry weight of shoot and root, leaf area and stomata count, biochemical characteristics (total chlorophylls and phenols), leaf nutrient content, and uptake by seedlings. Inoculation with G. fasciculatum resulted in higher spore count, root colonization, higher growth characteristics, and nutrient status of leaf in comparison to uninoculated control. The performance of different AM fungal species increased along with phosphorus (P) fertilization in the soil. Soil inoculation of G. fasciculatum and 50 mg P kg−1 was found most effective with corresponding values (209%, 59%, 102.2%, 86.2%, 57.6%, 70.8%, and 131.5%) for higher spore count, root colonization, seedling height, stem diameter, dry weight of shoot and root, leaf area, total chlorophylls and phenolic content in leaf, respectively. This treatment had also increased phosphorus (130 mg kg−1), iron (46.8 mg kg−1), copper (76.3 mg kg−1), and zinc (64.3 mg kg−1) in leaf with corresponding uptake of 180.77, 187.38, 213.79, and 122.58% compared to the uninoculated control.

Effect of bio-organic and inorganic nutrient sources to improve leaf nutrient status in apricot

The present study was carried out on 20-year-old ‘New Castle’ apricot (Prunus armeniaca L.) trees grown in Shiwalik hill range of north-western Himalayan region of India. The conjoint efficacy of bio-organics used along with chemical fertilizers for improving leaf nutrient content. Bio-organic nutrient sources namely, vermi-compost (VC), bio-fertilizer (BF), cow urine (CU) and two levels of NPK fertilizers, i.e. 75 and 50% of recommended dose were evaluated in 13 different treatment combinations. The conjoint treatment application of bio-fertilizer- 60 g tree−1, vermi-compost- 30 kg tree−1, cow urine -12.5% as foliar application and 50% NPK significantly improved total N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu, Zn and Mn contents of leaf and was significantly increased by 30.4, 109.5, 31.6, 33.5, 65.7, 34.6, 71.9, 47.5 and 31.3%, respectively over control (traditional orchard practice). The study inferred a saving of 50% of NPK fertilizers over the traditional orchard practice being followed in the region.

Response of strawberry to organic versus inorganic fertilizers

The aim of this research was designed in order to optimize integrated plant nutrient supply (IPNS) through balanced fertilization of organic, inorganic and microbial inoculants in strawberry cv. Chandler. The potential efficiency of bio-organics used along with chemical fertilizers on cropping behaviour, physical-chemical and biological properties of rhizosphere soil, fruit yield, quality attributes and leaf nutrient content was investigated. The significant improvement in physico-chemical properties of the soil and nutrient uptake was recorded. The uninoculated control received farmyard manure (FYM) and inorganic nitrogen (N) recorded the highest cation exchange capacity (CEC) and soil organic carbon (OC) content. Highest available N and phosphorus (P) of soil were recorded in vermicompost and inorganic N applied in two and one split, respectively. The concentration of micronutrients cations viz., iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn) in soil was higher in treatment received vermicompost and inorganic N in two splits. The integration of bio-organic nutrient supplements also significantly enriched the microbial status of the rhizosphere soil, leaf nutrient concentration and maintained soil health and productivity on long term basis for sustainable fruit production.

Morphological and molecular diversity analysis vis-a-vis phylogenetic correlation among pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) varieties

Abstract Identification of different pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) genotypes using morphological descriptors and further substantiated through molecular means is essential for a breeding program. Characterization using molecular markers has an advantage over its morphological counterpart due to its low expense, quick and reliable results, and the requirement of less sophisticated equipment. In this study, eight different pomegranate cultivars were characterized based on their morphological and molecular characters in sub-tropical regions between 2018 and 2019. Morphological experiments were conducted in a randomized block design replicated thrice for each cultivar, whereas RAPD markers were employed for molecular studies. Principal component analysis revealed significant morphological variation (79.61%) among the cultivars. A high level of polymorphism, similar to PCA, was observed with RAPD analysis (80.49%). Some discrepancies between morphological and molecular results were noted in UPGMA cluster analysis. However, eight primers (total = 41) distinctively separated the Bhagwa variety from others, with the maximum similarity coefficient value (ca. 0.54) and superior fruit quality distinguished in PCA analysis with the maximum mean Euclidean distance (ca. 16). Hence, RAPD markers could be used along with morphological markers for a quick screening of germplasms in further crop improvement programs.

The study was carried out during 2006-08 on 20-year-old 'New Castle' apricot (Prunus armeniaca L.) trees to investigate the conjoint efficacy of bio-organics used along with chemical fertilizers on cropping behaviour, soil properties and quality attributes. Conjoint application of biofertilizers 60 g/tree, vermicompost 30 kg/tree, cow urine 12.5% and 50% NPK resulted in significantly maximum bloom density (25.08%), fruit set (62.38%), yield (29.85 kg/tree), fruit firmness (7.06 kg/cm 2 ), total soluble solids (17.04 °Brix), reducing sugars (3.97%), ascorbic acid (7.29 mg/100 g) and total carotenoids (0.96 mg/100 g). This combination also significantly improved physical, chemical and biological properties of the soil rhizosphere. Available N, P and K content of rhizosphere soil was increased by 34.8, 88.3 and 16.6%, respectively. Micronutrients (Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn) were improved by 15.1, 25.3, 28.7 and 24.1% respectively. The microbial biomass pool in terms of Pseudomonas, Bacillus, Azotobacter chroococcum and Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi increased by 208.25, 113.40, 383.50 and 442.50% respectively over control.

Insect Pest Management of Vegetables in Pocket Areas of Modi Rural Municipality, Parbat

Modi Rural Municipality is one of the commercial vegetable pocket areas under temperate climate. A study was carried out during July 2021 in three vegetable growing areas: Tilahar, Deupur and Bajung of Modi Rural Municipality. A total number of nine quadrates (10×10) m2 were laid, including three replicating quadrates in each area with 500m differences from each quadrates in the sampling site. Overall, 18 farmers were interviewed to collect information about vegetables grown, insect pests that affected vegetables and their management practices. The total number of 24 insect pests were recorded belonging to five orders from 14 vegetable crops. Greater Sorensen's similarity index of insects was recorded in Tilahar and Deupur (ß=0.52) because there was similarity in environment, habitats, larval host plants and visiting plants of insects. Lower Sorensen's similarity index (ß=0.25) was recorded in Deupur and Bajung as there was less similarity in environment, habitats, larval host plants and visiting plants of insects. Insect pests and diseases on vegetables were the major problems in the study areas. The use of chemical insecticides was the means to control adopted by most of farmers while a few of them used other control methods. Insecticides on pests were applied considering fewer precautions. The study clearly indicated that the farmer’s knowledge towards Integrated Pest Management (IPM) was null and thus necessary action should be taken by concerned agencies to increase rate of vegetable production, avoid the heavy use of chemicals and allied consequences.

CORRELATION AND REGRESSION STUDIES IN MANGO (MANGIFERA INDICAL.)

The present investigation was carried out during 2004–2006 on 15-year-old 'Dashehari' mango (Mangifera indica L.) trees to establish a relationship between growth, leaf nutrient content, fruit yield, and quality attributes. Four districts of Himachal Pradesh namely, Kangra, Una, Hamirpur and Bilaspur were selected according to multistage sampling scheme. Based on yield performance, an optimum sample size of 20 trees from each orchard was comprised of 10 trees of two categories: high productivity (>90 kg tree−1) and low productivity (<90 kg tree−1) were selected using the probability proportional to size sampling scheme. Both high as well as low productive orchards were analyzed for soil and leaf chemical properties. Simple linear correlation and multiple regression analyses were also worked out between all possible combinations. The contribution of leaf nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), and iron (Fe) on growth, fruit yield and physical-biochemical quality characteristics by fitting step-wise regression analysis was studied. Multiple regression analyses indicated variability in fruit yield due to leaf nutrient contents and tree volume to the extent of 66–73% and 35–68% in high and low productive orchards, respectively.
