The evolution of the transverse centroid of asymmetric laser field in plasmas with various density distributions

The propagation of asymmetric relativistic intense laser beams in nonuniform and uniform underdense cold plasmas is studied. After simplifying the wave equation, we obtain the evolution equation of the transverse centroid of laser beams in terms of variational approaches. Theoretical analysis shows that in uniform plasmas a laser beam with an asymmetric initial phase has a constant centroid drift velocity, at which the centroid of the laser beam drifts away from the light axis in a fixed direction; the centroid drift velocity of a laser beam with symmetric initial phase, but either symmetric or asymmetric amplitude, is always zero, i.e., the symmetric features of the laser field is retained. Furthermore, the channel-like symmetric plasma plays a role like a restoring force to confine the laser centroid around the density channel axis so the centroid of the laser beam with asymmetric amplitude or phase is going to oscillate with damp around the channel axis. The nonlinear effect can symmetrize initially asymmetric laser beams and the steeper effective density gradient is more beneficial to the symmetrizing process. Finally, the analytic results are checked and confirmed by numerical simulations with finite difference to the wave equation and two-dimensional particle-in-cell code.

Short-pulse laser absorption via J×B heating in ultrahigh intensity laser plasma interaction

An analytical fluid model for J×B heating during the normal incidence by a short ultraintense linearly polarized laser on a solid-density plasma is proposed. The steepening of an originally smooth electron density profile as the electrons are pushed inward by the laser is included self-consistently. It is shown that the J×B heating includes two distinct coupling processes depending on the initial laser and plasma conditions: for a moderate intensity (a⩽1), the ponderomotive force of the laser light can drive a large plasma wave at the point ne=4γ0nc resonantly. When this plasma wave is damped, the energy is transferred to the plasma. At higher intensity, the electron density is steepened to a high level by the time-independent ponderomotive force, ne>4γ0nc, so that no 2ω resonance will occur, but the longitudinal component of the oscillating ponderomotive field can lead to an absorption mechanism similar to “vacuum heating.”

Design of octahedral spherical hohlraum for CH Rev5 ignition capsule

In this paper, we design an octahedral spherical Au hohlraum for CH Rev5 ignition capsule [S. W. Haan et al., Phys. Plasmas 18, 051001 (2011)] by using the initial design method and two-dimensional (2D) simulations, and we investigate its laser entrance hole (LEH) closure and laser-plasma instabilities (LPI) by using a spherical hohlraum with two different-size LEHs via 2D simulations. The designed spherical hohlraum with RH=5 RC, RL=1.2 mm, and RL*=2RL requires an ignition laser pulse of 1.92 MJ in energy and 670 TW in peak power, where RH, RC, RL, and RL* are radii of the spherical hohlraum, capsule, LEH, and the cylindrical LEH outer ring, respectively. From 2D simulations, the closure and opening up of LEH are clearly obtained. The LEH closure and its rate are strongly connected to the radiation pulse, while the LEH opening-up and its rate are strongly connected to the laser pulse. The smallest radius of LEH during closure is 0.6 mm before opening up, which leaves enough room for arranging the laser beams with a radius of 0.5 mm in our design. By using a post-process code for LPI, a relatively high stimulated Brillouin scattering fraction and a very low stimulated Raman scattering fraction are predicted, which may be due to the neglection of three-dimensional density gradients of the ablative flow along the laser transportation in 2D simulations. This work provides the energy and power references for the future ignition laser facility which uses octahedral spherical hohlraums as ignition targets.

Stimulated Brillouin scattering behaviors in different species ignition hohlraum plasmas in high-temperature and high-density region

The presence of multiple ion species can add additional branches to the IAW dispersion relation and change the Landau damping significantly. Different IAW modes excited by stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and different SBS behaviors in several typical ignition hohlraum plasmas in the high-temperature and high-density region have been researched by Vlasov-Maxwell simulation. The slow mode in HeH or CH plasmas is the least damped mode and will be excited in SBS, while the fast mode in AuB plasmas is the least damped mode and will be excited in SBS. Due to strong Landau damping, the SBS in H or HeH plasmas is strong convective instability, while the SBS in AuB plasmas is absolute instability due to the weak Landau damping. However, although the SBS in CH plasmas is weak convective instability in the linear theory, the SBS will transform into absolute instability due to decreasing linear Landau damping by particles trapping. These results give a detail research of the IAW modes excitation and the properties of SBS in different species plasmas, thus providing the possibility of controlling SBS by increasing the linear Landau damping of the IAW by changing ion species.

Growth and saturation of stimulated Raman scattering in two overlapping laser beams

Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations are presented of the linear and nonlinear developments of stimulated Raman scattering in two overlapping laser beams. The development of the most unstable mode in the linear stage is consistent with a previous paper [C. Z. Xiao et al., Phys. Plasmas 26, 062109 (2019)] where SL mode (two beams share a common scattered light) is dominant in the overlapping region. This mode is enhanced with plasma density and correlation of beam polarizations. When lasers are cross-polarized, it backs to the single-beam Raman backscattering with weak intensity. Trapping-induced nonlinear frequency shift leads to the saturation of SL mode by detuning the coupling and broadening the spectrum. An interesting result that SL mode becomes stronger as the incidence angle increases is contrary to the theoretical prediction and it is a consequence of less efficient saturation in the nonlinear stage.

Controlling stimulated Raman scattering by two-color light in inertial confinement fusion

A method is proposed to control the stimulated Raman scattering in the inertial confinement fusion by using auxiliary 2ω light to suppress the stimulated Raman scattering of the 3ω light. In this scheme, inverse bremsstrahlung absorption and parametric instabilities in the 2ω light increase the electron temperature and the plasma-density fluctuation, thus preventing the development of Raman scattering of the 3ω light. This scheme is successfully demonstrated by both one-dimensional kinetic simulations and two-dimensional radiative hydrodynamic simulations. The one-dimensional Vlasov results show that the time-averaged transmissivity of the 3ω light increases from 0.75 to 0.95 under certain conditions. Results obtained using the particle-in-cell method with Monte Carlo collisions show that the electron temperature is greatly increased with the increasing intensity of the 2ω light. The two-dimensional radiative hydrodynamic simulation results show that the electron temperature increases from 3.2 keV to 3.5 keV, and the time-averaged backscattering level decreases from 0.28 to 0.1 in the presence of the auxiliary 2ω light.

Enhancement of proton acceleration by a right-handed circularly polarized laser interaction with a cone target exposed to a longitudinal magnetic field

Our previous research [J. X. Gong et al. Phys. Plasmas 24, 033103 (2017)] shows that in the presence of an external longitudinal magnetic field, there is no cut-off density when a right-handed (RH-) circularly polarized (CP) laser propagates in the plasmas. In this work, the proton acceleration driven by an RH-CP laser interaction with a pre-magnetized cone target filled with a pre-formed plasma is investigated under the mechanism of target normal sheath acceleration. The strength of the external magnetic field considered in this paper is comparable to that of the incident laser. The two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation results show that with an external longitudinal magnetic field, both the energy and yield of protons accelerated by the sheath electric field at the rear of the target are remarkably increased because of the higher coupling efficiency from RH-CP laser energy to electrons and the more efficient electron acceleration. Electrons can be converged remarkably by the external magnetic field and the divergence of protons can be controlled evidently by the collimated electrons. The maximum cut-off energy of protons with an imposed longitudinal magnetic field can be promoted to be as high as 82 MeV. Detailed simulation results show that the maximum energy of protons increases with the increasing initial external magnetic field.

Interaction of parametric instabilities from 3ω and 2ω lasers in large-scale inhomogeneous plasmas

The mechanism of energy transfer from 3ω pump light to stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) generated by 2ω pump light is proposed. The backscattering light of stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) generated by 3ω pump light can work as a seed of the SBS of 2ω pump light, which results in the increase of the latter. Adding 2ω pump light into 3ω pump light will decrease the reflectivity of SBS generated from 3ω pump light. The total reflectivity will first decrease and then increase with an increase of the ratio of 2ω light intensity to the intensity of 2ω and 3ω lights , and will be controlled in a lower level when this ratio f is about 10%−20%. These results give a method to control the total reflectivity of SBS and SRS in inertial confinement fusion (ICF) by adding 2ω light into 3ω light.
