Novel Low-Temperature Synthesis and Characterization of Lithium Cobalt Dioxide for Lithium Rechargeable Batteries

Lithium cobalt oxide is synthesized by a novel solution combustion procedure. In this synthesis, a solution mixture of lithium nitrate, cobalt nitrate and glycine fuel is heated to 500, 600 and 700 °C for 3 hours to obtain an ordered crystalline-layered compound. Physical properties of the synthesized cathode materials were evaluated using a XRD, SEM and particle size analyzer. The charge-discharge cycling characteristics of the synthesized lithium cobalt oxide heated at 700 °C exhibited better performance than other materials.

Identification of safety controls for engineering-scale pyroprocess facility

Pyroprocess technology has been considered as a fuel cycle option to solve the spent fuel accumulation problems in Korea. The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, Daejeon, Korea has been studying pyroprocess technology, and the conceptual design of an engineering-scale pyroprocess facility, called the Reference Engineering-scale Pyroprocess Facility, has been performed on the basis of a 10 ton heavy metal throughput per year. In this paper the concept of Reference Engineering-scale Pyroprocess Facility is introduced along with its safety requirements for the protection of facility workers, collocated workers, the off-site public, and the environment. For the identification of safety structures, systems, and components and/or administrative controls, the following activities were conducted: (1) identifying hazards associated with operations; (2) identifying potential events associated with these hazards; and (3) identifying the potential preventive and/or mitigative controls that reduce the risk associated with these accident events. This study will be used to perform a safety evaluation for accidents involving any of the hazards identified, and to establish safety design policies and propose a more definite safety design.

Synthesis and Electrochemical Study of Zr-Doped LiNi_xMn_yCo_(1-x–y)O₂ as Cathode Material for Secondary Li-Ion Battery

In this work, a simple way was contrived to enhance the rate capability and cycle life of LiNixMnyCo(1-x-y)O2 by doping Zr into the material. Zr-doped LiNixMnyCo(1-x-y)O2 was synthesized by solution-based synthetic route, and its electrochemical performance was investigated as 2016 coin-type half cell. With doping, some impurity peaks appeared in the XRD pattern, which seems to be related to Zr containing oxides. The enhanced characteristics in the rate capability and cycle life might be the result of the protective effect of Zr oxide against the decomposition of electrolyte and a faster Li diffusion rate.

본 연구에서는 용해억제제를 첨가한 알칼리 매체에 알루미늄-공기 단위전지의 음극전위를 측정하면서 합금원소, 전해질에 첨가하는 억제제의 종류와 농도, 용액온도, KOH 농도, 그리고 부하전류밀도가 미치는 영향에 대해 조사하였다. 알루미늄 음극전위는 실험변수에 크게 좌우되지 않았으며, S.C.E.를 기준하여 -1.65 V로 측정되었으며, 이론치와 비교하면 60% 및 91%에 해당함을 알 수 있었다.

In this paper, conservatisms of current plugging criteria on steam generator tubes are reviewed and six new failure prediction models for dual through-wall cracks are proposed. In order to determine the optimum ones among these local or global failure prediction models, a series of plastic collapse tests and corresponding finite element analyses are carried out with respect to two adjacent axial through-wall cracks in thin plates. Then, reaction force model, plastic zone contact model and COD (Crack Opening Displacement) base model were selected as the optimum ones for integrity assessment of steam generator tubes with dual cracks.

Measurement of Thickness of Wall-Thinned Plate using Acoustic Wavenumber Spectroscopy and Spatial Local Wavenumber Filtering

The surface of a structure can generate cracks or wall-thinning, due to corrosion. This can eventually lead to the fracture of the structure, which can trigger enormous fatality and property loss. Thereby, a laser imaging technology on such structures as thin plate structure, or piping which thickness is relatively thin in comparison to the area, has been steadily studied for the past 10 years. The most typical among the laser imaging technology is the pulse laser imaging. By using the same, a new technology for inspecting and imaging a desired area within a relatively short period of time was developed, so as to scan various structures including the thin-plate structure and piping. However, this method builds images by measuring waves reflected from defects, and have a time delay of a few milliseconds at each scanning point. Moreover, complexity of the systems is so high due to additional components such as laser focusing parts. This paper proposes laser imaging method with increased scanning speed based on excitation and measurement of standing waves in structures. Wavenumber of standing waves changes at sections with geometrical discontinuity such as thickness. It is shown that defects in a structure can be visualized by generating standing waves with single frequency and scanning the waves at each point by the laser scanning system suggested in this work. The proposed technique is validated by a wall-thinned plate that has a linear thickness variation
