Depletion of ozone over Antarctica during 2006

The large decrease in the ozone hole area from 2003 to 2004 and the large increase again from 2004 to 2005 and again from 2005 to 2006 cannot be explained by changes in stratospheric halogen loading but are due to interannual dynamical variability. This variability will make it difficult to detect the onset of ozone recovery in Antarctica and in particular it will be difficult to attribute any positive change in ozone to declining amounts of ozone depleting substances. In addition to analysis based on meteorological data and satellites, this paper contains results from a number of stations. Total ozone and ozonesonde data for the 2006 season have been compared to data from previous years. Several stations have observed total ozone columns that are close to the all time low for those stations. In some cases record low total ozone columns have been recorded.

Measurement of total ozone, D-UV radiation, sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide with Brewer spectrophotometer at Maitri, Antarctica during 2000

The latest state-of-art equipment called Brewer Ozone Spectrophotometer has been installed at Maitri, the permanent Indian Scientific Research Station, Antarctica in July 1999 to monitor total ozone, damaging part of ultra-violet radiation (D-UV), sulphur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). The depletion of ozone and its fluctuation were monitored day by day during Antarctic spring season (August-October). The data collected during the year 2000 are analysed in this paper. The values of total ozone and D-UV are compared in each month. The sudden increase or decrease of D-UV confirms further depletion or recovery of ozone in the successive days during the spring season. The measurements confirm the existence of 'Ozone Hole' over Antarctica 2000. The measurements of SO2 and NO2 at Maitri show very low values.

Evidence of the Pinatubo volcanic eruption on the distribution of ozone over the tropical Indian region

Three independent sets of experimental data for ozone obtained by balloon‐borne ozonesondes and Dobson spectrophotometer during the period 1979–1998 are analyzed over the tropical Indian region covering two stations, Delhi (28°N, 77°E) and Pune (18°N, 73.5°E), in search of volcanic signals after the Mount Pinatubo eruption of 1991. These data sets are analyzed using a regression model, based on multiple function regression theory, which takes into account several natural and anthropogenic signals in order to detect a relatively smaller magnitude, sporadic effect. To study the volcanic effects on the vertical structure of ozone, data sets are independently analyzed for four different predefined Umkehr layers from 15 to 33 km. The total ozone amounts obtained by Dobson spectrophotometer over these two stations are revisited and analyzed using the above regression model. A maximum decrease of the order of 4–7 Dobson units (DU) in the altitude range 15–24 km following 3–4 months of eruption and a maximum increase of the order of 2–3 DU for the altitude range 24–33 km immediately after the eruption have been observed in ozone amounts over these two tropical stations. The total ozone amount measurement indicates a decrease of about 5–6% during the period effected by the Pinatubo eruption. The decreasing trend in ozone content is found to exist up to a maximum of 1.5 years from the time of eruption. The similarity of the results obtained from the three sets of data analyzed affirms the effect of volcanic eruption over the tropical Indian region.

Long‐term trend of ozone column over the Indian region

Ozone observations taken during the past 23–45 years by Dobson spectrophotometer at six stations of India have been analyzed to examine its long‐term trend over this subcontinent. These stations are Kodaikanal (10°N, 77°E), Pune (18°N, 74°E), Mount Abu/Ahmedabad (24°N, 72°E), Varanasi (25°N, 82°E), New Delhi (28°N, 77°E), and Srinagar (34°N, 74°E). An increasing trend of this species over the years has been noticed at all the places, except at Varanasi, where a decreasing trend has been found. The Nimbus 7 total ozone mapping spectrometer data at all the six stations have been compared with the Dobson data. Good agreement is found at all the stations except at Kodaikanal and Ahmedabad. The cause of these trends could be attributed, partly, to the trends of ozone in the troposphere.

Global warming and solar anomaly

During 2002-2008, there was no increase in global temperature, though green house gas concentrations had increased. Sun is the ultimate source of energy. It has been, therefore, examined if there was any anomaly in the solar characteristics during this period. The sunspot number data has been used for this purpose. This parameter has an 11-year solar activity cycle and the same is found in the global temperature. But the trend in sun’s output, after removing solar activity effect, does not match with the long term trend of global temperature. Peculiarities in the duration and in the peak value of solar cycle 23 were identified which might have portended the increase of global temperature during 2002-2008. The possibility of the pause of increase in temperature could also be that the heat generated due to the increase in the greenhouse gas concentration was absorbed in deep ocean layer.
