Combinatorial quest for cost effective - environment friendly all oxide photovoltaics raised several outliers that didn't match the anticipated p-n junction mechanisms. Further investigation showed that spontaneous nanostructures forming at the back contacts are the source of Surface Plasmon Resonance, causing Hot Electron injection and PV activity.

Solid Results on All-Solid Solar Cells: The cover picture shows Co–Fe–O: a material for a new type of all-oxide solar cell, which reaches its maximum photovoltaic performances at a particular Fe:Co ratio. If enough iron is added to Co3O4, the structure changes from spinel, a stable phase of Co3O4, to inverse spinel, which alters the physical properties and results in an improvement in the photovoltaic performance. The performance then begins to drop if too much iron is added to the structure. This study demonstrates the power of combinatorial materials science for solar cell design. Effect of Substrate Temperature on Properties of CuInSe<sub>2</sub> Thin Films Deposited by Magnetron Sputtering

CuInSe 2 thin films were successfully deposited by magnetron RF-sputtering at different substrates temperature (100°C, 200°C, 300°C, 400°C, and 500°C). Effect of substrate temperature on these films crystallization, morphologies, and electrical properties were investigated. Results showed that increase of substrate temperature is in favor to be constituted in a chalcopyrite phase with a preferential orientation of (112), (211) and (312). The morphology images implied the film deposited at 200 oC had smoother surface than others. Furthermore, it was indicated that substrates temperature of 200°C had the best electrical and optical properties among these samples.

Processing and properties of Yb-doped BiFeO3 ceramics

The authors prepared Yb-doped bismuth iron oxide ceramics (Bi1−xYbxFeO3, with 0⩽x⩽0.20) by rapid liquid phase sintering method and investigated the material’s structures and electrical properties. The x-ray diffraction measurements showed that the doping of Yb has induced noticeable lattice distortion in the ceramics, and a largest distortion was observed when the concentration of Yb was 15%. By doping electrical resistivity, ferroelectric and dielectric properties of the ceramics were improved. Among all samples, BiFeO3 doped with 15% Yb was found to have the smallest leakage current density (<10−7A∕cm2) and the largest remnant polarization (8.5μC∕cm2).

A positron annihilation study of ZnO prepared by thermal oxidation at different temperatures

ZnO particles were prepared from Zn nanoparticles by thermal oxidation in air, over a temperature range of 500 to 900 ºC. The microstructure of ZnO was investigated by SEM and XRD, showing that the thermal oxidation temperature affected the particle growth mechanism, morphology, and microstructure. Positron annihilation spectroscopy indicated that the thermal oxidation process has an important influence on the zinc-related vacancies and their clusters in the ZnO particles.

Simulation of ZnO based film bulk acoustic resonator by modified Butterworth-Van Dyke model

Film bulk acoustic resonator model was investigated. This model was based on piezoelectric resonator formula and Butterworth-Van Dyke (BVD) model. Through simulation, the influences of piezoelectric film thickness and materials property and top electrode area on FBAR performance were studied. In the extended equivalent BVD model both the piezoelectric and the electrode layers were considered, and they have influence on resonant frequency and mass load effect. The modified BVD model includes equivalent capacitance and inductance of piezoelectric film and of top electrode layer, equivalent capacitance of bottom electrode layer, and equivalent capacitance and inductance of mass load film. Through this model the mass load effect can be proved close to the experimental data. Therefore, FBAR can be exploited as an acoustic-wave mass microbalance sensor. The theoretical predictions of resonant frequency and mass load effect were approximate well with the measurement results of ZnO based FBAR. The proposed model can be readily used in the FBAR design of micro-mass load sensor.
