Numerical simulation study of SOA in Pearl River Delta region

Secondary organic aerosols (SOA) is an important component of the atmospheric particle pollution, thus, determining the status and sources of SOA pollution is the premise of deeply understanding the occurrence, development law and the influence factors of the atmospheric particle pollution. Based on the pollution sources and meteorological data of Pearl River Delta region, the study used the two-dimensional model coupled with SOA module to stimulate the status and source of SOA pollution in regional scale. The results show: the generation of SOA presents obvious characteristics of photochemical reaction, and the high concentration appears at about 14:00; SOA concentration is high in some areas of Guangshou and Dongguan with large pollution source-emission, and it is also high in some areas of Zhongshan, Zhuhai and Jiangmen which are at downwind position of Guangzhou and Dongguan. Contribution ratios of several main pollution sources to SOA are: biogenic sources 72.6%, mobile sources 30.7%, point sources 12%, solvent and oil paint sources 12%, surface sources less than 5% respectively.

Contributions to the explosive growth of PM<sub>2.5</sub> mass due to aerosol–radiation feedback and decrease in turbulent diffusion during a red alert heavy haze in Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei, China

Abstract. The explosive growth of PM2.5 mass usually results in extreme PM2.5 levels and severe haze pollution in eastern China, and is generally underestimated by current atmospheric chemistry models. Based on one such model, GRAPES_CUACE, three sensitivity experiments – a “background” experiment (EXP1), an “online aerosol feedback” experiment (EXP2), and an “80 % decrease in the turbulent diffusion coefficient of chemical tracers” experiment, based on EXP2 (EXP3) – were designed to study the contributions of the aerosol–radiation feedback (AF) and the decrease in the turbulent diffusion coefficient to the explosive growth of PM2.5 during a “red alert” heavy haze event in China's Jing–Jin–Ji (Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei) region. The results showed that the turbulent diffusion coefficient calculated by EXP1 was about 60–70 m−2 s−1 on a clear day and 30–35 m−2 s−1 on a haze day. This difference in the diffusion coefficient was not enough to distinguish between the unstable atmosphere on the clear day and the extremely stable atmosphere during the PM2.5 explosive growth stage. Furthermore, the inversion calculated by EXP1 was obviously weaker than the actual inversion from sounding observations on the haze day. This led to a 40 %–51 % underestimation of PM2.5 by EXP1; the AF decreased the diffusion coefficient by about 43 %–57 % during the PM2.5 explosive growth stage, which obviously strengthened the local inversion. In addition, the local inversion indicated by EXP2 was much closer to the sounding observations than that indicated by EXP1. This resulted in a 20 %–25 % reduction of PM2.5 negative errors in the model, with errors as low as −16 % to −11 % in EXP2. However, the inversion produced by EXP2 was still weaker than the actual observations, and the AF alone could not completely explain the PM2.5 underestimation. Based on EXP2, the 80 % decrease in the turbulent diffusion coefficient of chemical tracers in EXP3 resulted in near-zero turbulent diffusion, referred to as a “turbulent intermittence” atmospheric state, which subsequently resulted in a further 14 %–20 % reduction of the PM2.5 underestimation; moreover, the negative PM2.5 errors were reduced to −11 % to 2 %. The combined effects of the AF and the decrease in the turbulent diffusion coefficient explained over 79 % of the underestimation of the explosive growth of PM2.5 in this study. The results show that online calculation of the AF is essential for the prediction of PM2.5 explosive growth and peaks during severe haze in China's Jing–Jin–Ji region. Furthermore, an improvement in the planetary boundary layer scheme with respect to extremely stable atmospheric stratification is essential for a reasonable description of local “turbulent intermittence” and a more accurate prediction of PM2.5 explosive growth during severe haze in this region of China.

Temperature, Air Pollution, and Mortality During the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games

PP-29-012 Background/Aims: The aim of this study was to analyze temperature, air pollution, and mortality during the period 1 May 2008–20 September 2008, and to test whether source controls imposed prior to and during the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympic Games led to decreased levels of pollution and mortality. Methods: The daily mortality, temperature, particulate matter (PM10) and ozone observed during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games source control period (20 July 2008–20 September 2008) were compared with those recorded in the period 1 May 2008–19 July 2008, labeled “baseline.” The influence of temperature and air pollution variables, as well as the source control period, on daily mortality was analyzed using Poisson regression models. Results: During the source control period, average daily PM10 concentrations decreased 45.3% (89.5 vs. 163.5 μg/m3) compared to baseline. Average daily temperature increased 10.6% compared to baseline (25.1 vs. 22.7°C). Average daily ozone concentrations increased 2.3% compared to baseline (43.6 vs. 42.6 μg/m3). During the source control period, daily total mortality was not significantly different as compared with the baseline period (110 vs. 109). Analyzed separately in Poisson regression models controlling for periodic effects, PM10, ozone, and temperature were each significantly associated with daily mortality. An increase in average daily ozone and PM10 concentration by 10 μg/m3 was associated with the 2.3% and 0.2% increase in total mortality, respectively. An increase in average daily temperature by 1°C was associated with a 1.1% increase in total mortality. However, when all 3 factors were considered simultaneously, only temperature remained associated with mortality, indicating excess mortality of 0.6% per 1°C. Conclusion: Efforts for source control measures in Beijing during the Olympic Games resulted in decreased PM10 concentration. However, daily mortality did not decrease. The large increase in daily temperatures during the source control period, combined with a strong mortality effect of temperature, may be responsible for these counterintuitive findings.

Response of the global surface ozone distribution to Northern Hemisphere sea surface temperature changes: implications for long-range transport

Abstract. The response of surface ozone (O3) concentrations to basin-scale warming and cooling of Northern Hemisphere oceans is investigated using the Community Earth System Model (CESM). Idealized, spatially uniform sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies of ±1 °C are individually superimposed onto the North Pacific, North Atlantic, and North Indian oceans. Our simulations suggest large seasonal and regional variability in surface O3 in response to SST anomalies, especially in the boreal summer. The responses of surface O3 associated with basin-scale SST warming and cooling have similar magnitude but are opposite in sign. Increasing the SST by 1 °C in one of the oceans generally decreases the surface O3 concentrations from 1 to 5 ppbv. With fixed emissions, SST increases in a specific ocean basin in the Northern Hemisphere tend to increase the summertime surface O3 concentrations over upwind regions, accompanied by a widespread reduction over downwind continents. We implement the integrated process rate (IPR) analysis in CESM and find that meteorological O3 transport in response to SST changes is the key process causing surface O3 perturbations in most cases. During the boreal summer, basin-scale SST warming facilitates the vertical transport of O3 to the surface over upwind regions while significantly reducing the vertical transport over downwind continents. This process, as confirmed by tagged CO-like tracers, indicates a considerable suppression of intercontinental O3 transport due to increased tropospheric stability at lower midlatitudes induced by SST changes. Conversely, the responses of chemical O3 production to regional SST warming can exert positive effects on surface O3 levels over highly polluted continents, except South Asia, where intensified cloud loading in response to North Indian SST warming depresses both the surface air temperature and solar radiation, and thus photochemical O3 production. Our findings indicate a robust linkage between basin-scale SST variability and continental surface O3 pollution, which should be considered in regional air quality management.

The purpose is the global audiences will have a comprehensive understanding of the breadth and range of work of the Chinese government in context of environmental protection, haze prevention and control, and sustainable development.
