The luminescence properties of have been studied in aluminosilicate In phosphor, two emission bands are observed. Since these two emission bands are quite different, it can be presumed that ions occupy two types of sites, namely, and The energy transfer between the ions is elucidated from the critical concentration quenching data based on the electric multipolar interaction of the and site, respectively. In addition, the dominant multipolar interaction character of the site emission center was investigated from the relationship between the emission intensity per activator concentration and the activator concentration. © 2004 The Electrochemical Society. Effect of Composition on Luminescence Properties of Eu[sup 2+]-Activated Mullite

We have studied the photoluminescence properties of in mullite. The 0.005 mol -activated mullite shows a single broad-band emission character and an emission band at about 435 nm. The emission band shifts slightly to a longer wavelength with an increase in concentration because the distance between ions decreases and the probability of energy transfer among ions increases with increased concentration. However, mullite shows two emission centers, an - and an -site, which peak at 420 and 482 nm. Also, we investigated the compositional dependence of the luminescence properties of the ions based on the different Al/Si ratios. © 2003 The Electrochemical Society. All rights reserved.

Oxidation Issues in C/Oxide Composites

C-fiber/oxide matrix composites are attractive for high temperature applications because oxide matrices can possibly provide protection against oxidation and because of excellent mechanical properties of carbon fibers up to very high temperatures. Oxidation can still occur in such composites because oxygen can diffuse in through the oxide by solid state diffusion and oxidize carbon forming carbon monoxide. This talk will address the problems caused by CO, in particular the conditions under which CO gas bubbles and/or cracks can form in the oxide matrix. Also included will be the results of oxidation experiments on carbon samples buried deep within Al2O3 and Y2O3.
