Correlation Coefficient Analysis for Yield and its Components in Rice (Oryza sativa L.) Genotypes

Seventy genotypes of rice (Oryza sativa L.) were evaluated during Kharif 2014 to study the nature and extent of correlation among yield and yield attributing characters, number of tillers per plant, number of effective tillers per plant, plant height, panicle length, number of filled grains per panicle, 1000-grain weight, days to 50 per cent flowering, days to maturity, grain yield per plant. Character association studies revealed that the characters grain yield per plant showed significant positive association with plant height, number of tillers per plant, number of productive tillers per plant, number of filled grains per panicle and 1000 grain weight. This indicated that simultaneous selection of all these characters was important for yield improvement.

Screening of recombinant inbred lines for resistance to bacterial leaf blight pathotypes in rice (Oryza sativa L.)

In the present investigation 16 recombinant inbred lines (RIL’s) developed from the intra-specific cross between YH3 and AKDRMS 21-54 through Marker Assisted Pedigree Breeding Method were screened along with their parents and the checks, namely, BPT 5204, TN1 and Improved Samba Mahsuri (ISM) against IxoPt-20 pathotype at the ICAR-Indian Institute of Rice Research, Hyderabad during Rabi 2021-22 and a new pathotype of Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae causing Bacterial Leaf Blight disease in rice at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Maruteru during Kharif 2022 to identify pathotype specific resistant sources. Morpho-Molecular screening was adopted to evaluate the recombinant inbred lines over two locations in the consecutive seasons of Rabi 2021-22 and Kharif 2022. Based on per cent diseased leaf area, the genotypes were scored and categorised as per the Standard Evaluation System (SES) scale provided by International Rice Research Institute (IRRI). The results revealed all 16 RIL’s to be either resistant (10) or moderately resistant (6) to IxoPt-20 pathotype. However, only five RIL’s were found to be resistant, while four RIL’s were moderately resistant for the new virulent pathotype. Seven RIL’s with resistant to moderately resistant reaction for IxoPt-20 pathotype, showed moderately susceptible reaction for the new virulent pathotype. Among the resistant RIL’s identified for each pathotype, BPT-1901-72-10-6, BPT-1901-108-4-1 and BPT-1901-111-3-2 were found to be uniformly resistant, while, BPT-1901-45-8-6 and BPT-1901-163-1-18 were uniformly moderately resistant to both IXoPt-20 and the new virulent pathotype at Hyderabad and Maruteru, respectively, indicating their potential as genetic stocks for development of new cultivars resistant to bacterial leaf blight disease.

DUS Characterization for Germplasm of Rice

For the establishment of the distinctness among thirty-five landraces of rice, twenty nine characters were used.Characterization of thirty-five landraces of rice was done using twenty nine agro-morphological traits following Distinctiveness, Uniformity and Stability test (DUS) during kharif season of 2014 at the DRR farm, ICRISAT campus.Out of thirtyfive varieties studied, twenty-two were found to be distinctive on the basis of twenty nine essential characters.This study will be useful for breeders, researchers and farmers to identify and choose the restoration and conservation of beneficial genes for crop improvement and also to seek protection under Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmer's Rights Act.

Characterization of African Rice Germplasm for Morphological and Yield Attributing Traits

For the establishment of the distinctness among 31 accessions of Oryza glaberrima, eight morphological traits following Distinctness, Uniformity and Stability test (DUS) studied. Out of 31 accessions studied, two accessions viz., EC861804, EC861805 were found to be highly distinct as they possessed distinct traits namely purple split ligule, medium green leaves, erect flag leaf, presence of awn along with lodging tolerance indicating their usefulness as donors for crop improvement programmes. Analysis of variance revealed significant differences for all the characters studied. Phenotypic coefficient variation was higher than genotypic coefficient variation and magnitude of PCV and GCV was high for number of productive tillers and spikelets per panicle. High heritability coupled with high genetic advance was observed for days to 50 per cent flowering and number of spikelets per panicle which suggested the presence of high additive gene action which would respond to selection owing their high genetic variability and transmissibility.

Potential of water saving in irrigated rice through System of Rice Intensification (SRI)

A field experiment was conducted in wet and dry seasons of 2006 and 2007 at Hyderabad to study the influence of different methods of crop establishment viz., system of rice intensification (SRI), Eco-SRI (nutrients applied through organic source only and conventional method on rice productivity, water use efficiency and its productivity. During wet season, grain yield was significantly higher in SRI than conventional method and Eco-SRI by 10.3 and 33.4%, respectively. Whereas, SRI and conventional method were on par and superior to Eco-SRI in rabi. Among the cultivars, Swarna and DRRH2 were significantly superior to other varieties in kharif and rabi, respectively. There was a mean saving of 32% water in SRI as compared to conventional method. Further the amount of water used for 1 kg grain production was higher (3177 lts) for conventional as compared to SRI method (2162 lts). Hence, SRI can become a viable alternative approach to the conventional transplanting having advantage of both in terms of higher yield and water productivity especially in the areas of limited water situations.

The effect of leaffolder Cnaphalocrocis medinalis (Guenee) [Lepidoptera: Pyralidae] injury on the plant physiology and yield loss in rice

Abstract Influence of leaffolder feeding on chlorophyll, PS II activity and plant–water relations, effect of larval density on leaf damage and time course studies on larval feeding behaviour on altered physiological changes in TN1 rice culture were studied. Quantification of yield losses in the field caused by leaffolder was also assessed. Leaffolder damage resulted in 57% reduction in chlorophyll content, 23% reduction in PS II activity and 23% reduction in relative water content in comparison with control. Rice leaffolder larva folds the leaf and scrapes the green tissue from within the fold resulting in scorching and drying of the leaves. Larval density had differentially influenced effective leaf area of rice crop. Larval densities of more than 3 larvae per hill at maximum tillering stage resulted up to 20% unfilled grains, 28–57% reduction in PS II activity and 23% reduction in relative water content in comparison with the control. At flowering stage, flag leaf area damage of above 25% resulted in more than 50% unfilled grains over control, indicating direct effect of yield reduction in rice. Thus, a cumulative effect of loss in chlorophyll, reduced photosynthate availability and altered water relations caused by the leaffolder injury to flag leaf lead to greater yield loss in rice.
