Orthopedic Electric Belt: Heating and Supporting for Low Back Pain for Sacroiliac Joint Ailment

The global prevalence and years of healthy life lost due to disability rates from low back pain is one of the most significant factors to human health. Especially, developing and under developed counties such as Bangladesh is at risk of low back pain for sacroiliac joint ailment due to the lifestyle and working behavior. Hence, the primary focus of this paper is develop an orthopedic electric belt which can generate heat to alleviate this low back pain. This proposed electric belt consists of power resistors for heating system which is placed inside the belt and a temperature controller and dc power supply have been positioned outside. Simulation has been conducted to observe the current flow and to determine voltage and current. A hardware has also been developed with the temperature controller and the power driver circuit. Moreover, this proposed belt also offers portability, light-weight and inexpensive compared to other commercial electric belts.

Assessment of some physicochemical parameters and determining the corrosive characteristics of the Karnaphuli estuarine water, Chittagong, Bangladesh

The comprehensive study was found out to evaluate the concentration of different water qualities of the Karnaphuli river. Samples were collected from ten points (Bhandor Ghat to Bhakoliya Khal Ghat) in three seasons (winter, rainy, and spring) during the Hydrological Year 2014–2015 for continuous monitoring. Collected samples were analyzed for finding of some physicochemical parameters Temperature, pH, Alkalinity, Acidity, Total hardness, Sulfate, Chloride, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), and CO2. The investigated parameters were compared to the national and international standards. The mean values of water Temperature, pH, Alkalinity, Acidity, Total hardness, Phosphorus, Sulfate, Chloride, TDS, and free CO2 were found to be 28.36° C, 6.25, 275.63ppm, 19.75ppm, 259.29ppm, 0.904ppm, 70.74ppm, 534.63ppm, 778.83ppm & 18.03ppm, respectively. Water Quality Index (WQI), Langelier Saturation Index (LSI) and Ryznar Stability Index (RSI) values were found to be 99.92, −3.06 & 12.36, respectively, which indicate that the water quality is not good.

Assessment of coastal river water quality in Bangladesh: Implications for drinking and irrigation purposes

Saltwater intrusion in the coastal areas of Bangladesh is a prevalent phenomenon. However, it is not conducive to activities such as irrigation, navigation, fish spawning and shelter, and industrial usage. The present study analyzed 45 water samples collected from 15 locations in coastal areas during three seasons: monsoon, pre-monsoon, and post-monsoon. The aim was to comprehend the seasonal variation in physicochemical parameters, including water temperature, pH, electrical conductivity (EC), salinity, total dissolved solids (TDS), hardness, and concentrations of Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Fe2+, HCO3-, PO43-, SO42-, and Cl-. Additionally, parameters essential for agriculture, such as soluble sodium percentage (SSP), sodium absorption ratio (SAR), magnesium absorption ratio (MAR), residual sodium carbonate (RSC), Kelly's ratio (KR), and permeability index (PI), were examined. Their respective values were found to be 63%, 16.83 mg/L, 34.92 mg/L, 145.44 mg/L, 1.28 mg/L, and 89.29%. The integrated water quality index was determined using entropy theory and principal component analysis (PCA). The resulting entropy water quality index (EWQI) and SAR of 49.56% and 63%, respectively, indicated that the samples are suitable for drinking but unsuitable for irrigation. These findings can assist policymakers in implementing the Bangladesh Deltaplan-2100, focusing on sustainable land management, fish cultivation, agricultural production, environmental preservation, water resource management, and environmental protection in the deltaic areas of Bangladesh. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of seasonal variations in the hydrochemistry and water quality of coastal rivers, aiding in the comprehension of salinity intrusion origins, mechanisms, and causes.

Physicochemical and Microbiological Quality of Potable Water Supplied by DWASA in Dhaka City of Bangladesh

Dhaka is the largest and fastest-growing urban city in Bangladesh with a population density of 44,500/km². Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (DWASA) is the sole legal entity to develop and maintain a water supply system for city people. 78% DWASA water comes from underground—which leads to incremental depletion of groundwater. In this condition, reducing groundwater dependence and switching to surface water is the only way forward. Growing and increasingly wealthier population, climate change and the urbanization process deteriorate the Shitalakshya River which is the surface water source of DWASA. The purpose of this study was to investigate the DWASA supplied water quality around Dhaka city. Physicochemical and microbiological Parameters were analyzed by American Public Health Association (APHA) standard methods. The measured pH value (6.58-7.03) and Dissolved Oxygen (DO) value (6.10-7.50 mg/L) of samples indicate safe potable water. Calcium and Magnesium were found at a significant level. Both of these elements are essential for the human body. There were no heavy metals contamination in water supplied by DWASA. Total Coliforms and Fecal Coliforms of all samples showed less than 0.2 MPN/mL (most probable number <0.2 indicates absence of test organism in 1 mL). Total Viable Count (TVC) of all samples were less than 100 cfu/mL. The observed result was compared to acceptable limit of drinking water of Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) and Environment Conservation Rules, 1997, Bangladesh guideline. This study demonstrated that in general the potable water quality status of Dhaka city ranged from excellent to good.

Neoandrographolide was isolated from the ethylacetate soluble fraction of the ethanol extract of the fresh leaves of Adhatoda vasica (Family: Acanthaceae). The crude extracts of hexane, ethylacetate and butanol soluble fractions of ethanol extract were subjected to antimicrobial screening and brine shrimp lethality bioassay. The ethylacetate crude extract exhibited moderate antimicrobial activity against most of the test organisms and also showed significant cytotoxicity having LC50 0.61 µg/ml.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/dujs.v60i1.10326Dhaka Univ. Evaluation of the Potentiality of Eight Advanced Populations of Brassica Rapa L. Based on Yield and Yield Contributing Characters

In a study conducted at the experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University from November 2018 to February 2019, eight advanced populations of Brassica rapa L. were assessed to explore their variability, heritability, genetic advance, correlations and path coefficient considering twelve yield-contributing traits. Significant variation was observed among all populations for all traits. Minimum difference between phenotypic and genotypic variance was noted in most of the traits, while high genotypic and phenotypic coefficient of variation occurred in the number of secondary branches per plant, number of siliquae per plant, thousand seed weight, and seed yield per plant. Traits like days to first flowering, days to 50% flowering, and days to 80% maturity exhibited high heritability with low genetic advance. Conversely, the number of siliquae per plant demonstrated high heritability with high genetic advance, suggesting potentiality for trait selection. Correlation analysis identified significant positive associations between seed yield per plant and several traits. Path coefficient analysis highlighted direct positive effects on seed yield per plant from days to 80% maturity, root length, number of secondary branches per plant, and thousand seed weight. Chronologically, G6 performed the best showcasing most of the traits especially seed yield per plant and days to 80% maturity which can be considered as important breeding material for improvement of B. rapa L. Traditional medicine even in the present century plays an important role in delivering necessary health-care to the people of particularly the developing countries. Traditional medicinal systems usually rely on medicinal plants for treatment, which plants are utilized by traditional medicinal practitioners for treatment of a diverse variety of diseases, against some of which allopathic medicine has no known cure. Folk medicine is the most widely used form of traditional medicine in Bangladesh. Folk medicinal practitioners believe that ailments can occur through accumulation of toxins in blood, which in turn results from undigested food or improper emptying of bowels on a regular basis. The various toxins that accumulate then pass through the blood to various organs of the body and if they pass a certain threshold, the body no longer can defend itself against diseases resulting in diseases occurring from both within and without causes. As a result, one of the most frequent remedies prescribed by the folk medicinal practitioners or Kavirajes of Bangladesh is medicinal plant, which can purify blood, i.e. enable the body to get rid of toxic wastes either through neutralization or through elimination. Such blood purifying medicinal plants may or may not be accompanied with other medicinal plants dealing with treatment of the disease itself or its symptoms. This suggests that blood purifiers at the very least produces a laxative effect and can at the same time or independently boost up the immune system of the body. In fact, the Kavirajes advise even healthy people to take these blood purifying medicinal plants or plant parts on a regular basis such that toxins cannot accumulate within the body. The objective of the present study was to conduct ethnomedicinal surveys among the Kavirajes of various districts of Bangladesh to document their use of blood purifying medicinal plants. A total of 149 plants were found to be used by the 203 Kavirajes interviewed, of which 47 plant species are presented in this report. The plant species belonged to 30 families. Fabaceae family plants appeared to be the dominant species used by the Kavirajes contributing a total of 8 plants within the 47 plants reported. The Apocynaceae and the Zingiberaceae family contributed three plants each. Since prevention is always better than cure of any disease, the plants presented in this report can form the basis of further studies towards discovery of their possible immune-boosting and disease-preventing effects.
