We review recent theoretical and experimental progress in quantum state engineering with Josephson junction devices. The concepts of quantum computing have stimulated an increased activity in the field. Either charges or phases (fluxes) of the Josephson systems can be used as quantum degrees of freedom, and their quantum state can be manipulated coherently by voltage and current pulses. They thus can serve as qubits, and quantum logic gates can be performed. Their phase coherence time, which is limited, e.g., by the electromagnetic fluctuations in the control circuit, is long enough to allow a series of these manipulations. The quantum measurement process performed by a single-electron transistor, a SQUID, or further nanoelectronic devices is analyzed in detail.

Preparation and manipulation of a fault-tolerant superconducting qubit

We describe a qubit encoded in continuous quantum variables of an rf superconducting quantum interference device. Since the number of accessible states in the system is infinite, we may protect its two-dimensional subspace from small errors introduced by the interaction with the environment and during manipulations. We show how to prepare the fault-tolerant state and manipulate the system. The discussed operations suffice to perform quantum computation on the encoded state, syndrome extraction, and quantum error correction. We also comment on the physical sources of errors and possible imperfections while manipulating the system.

Basis dependence of approximative energy levels in a strongly driven two-level system

We introduce the diabatic and the adiabatic bases of a strongly driven superconducting two-level system. The multiphoton resonance conditions, the Rabi couplings, and the energy levels are calculated in both bases using the rotating wave approximation, and the results are compared with the corresponding numerical values. We show the basis dependence of the approximate energy levels and deduce the validity regions for both bases. We demonstrate a parameter region where neither of the bases is sufficient for calculations in the rotating wave approximation.

Berry phase with environment: classical versus quantum

We discuss the concept of the Berry phase in a dissipative system. We show that one can identify a Berry phase in a weakly-dissipative system and find the respective correction to this quantity, induced by the environment. This correction is expressed in terms of the symmetrized noise power and is therefore insensitive to the nature of the noise representing the environment, namely whether it is classical or quantum mechanical. It is only the spectrum of the noise which counts. We analyze a model of a spin-half (qubit) anisotropically coupled to its environment and explicitly show the coincidence between the effect of a quantum environment and a classical one.

Quantum computation at the edge of a disordered Kitaev honeycomb lattice

We analyze propagation of quantum information along chiral Majorana edge states in two-dimensional topological materials. The use of edge states may facilitate the braiding operation, an important ingredient in topological quantum computations. For the edge of the Kitaev honeycomb model in a topological phase, we discuss how the edge states can participate in quantum-information processing, and consider a two-qubit logic gate between distant external qubits coupled to the edge. Here we analyze the influence of disorder and noise on properties of the edge states and quantum-gate fidelity. We find that realistically weak disorder does not prevent one from implementation of a high-fidelity operation via the edge.

Quantencomputer können gewisse Aufgaben sehr viel schneller bewältigen als klassische Computer. Während die theoretischen Konzepte hierzu schon weit entwickelt sind, stecken die physikalischen Realisierungen noch in den Anfangsstadien. Für logische Operationen und Speicher sowie die Integration in elektronische Schaltungen erscheinen nanoelektronische Bauelemente am besten geeignet. Josephson-Kontakte mit kleiner Kapazität kombinieren die Phasenkohärenz des Supraleiters mit den Kontrollmöglichkeiten von Einzelelektronensystemen.
