An overview of the ITER electron cyclotron H&CD system

This paper reviews the design and functionality of the 24 MW 170 GHz electron cyclotron heating and current drive system being planned for the ITER Tokamak. The sub-systems (power supplies, gyrotrons, transmission lines and launcher antennas) are described based on present day technologies, while on-going R&D provides component and sub-system testing with the possibility of increasing the reliability of the overall EC system. Modifications to the steering ranges of the launching antennas are under investigation that can improve the functional capabilities of the EC system without increasing cost and relaxing the engineering constraints.

The 110-GHz Electron Cyclotron Range of Frequency System on JT-60U: Design and Operation

The electron cyclotron range of frequency (ECRF) system was designed and operated on the JT-60U to locally heat and control plasmas. The frequency of 110 GHz was adopted to inject the fundamental O-mode from the low field side with an oblique injection angle. The system is composed of four 1 MW-level gyrotrons, four transmission lines, and two antennae. The gyrotron is featured by a collector potential depression (CPD) and a gaussian beam output through a diamond window. The CPD enables JAERI to drive the gyrotron under the condition of the main DC voltage of 60 kV without a thyristor regulation. The gaussian mode from the gyrotron is effectively transformed to HE11 mode in the 31.75 mm diameter corrugated waveguide. About 75% of the output power of the gyrotrons can be injected into plasmas through the waveguides about 60 m in length. There are two antennae to control the deposition position of the EC wave during a plasma discharge. One is connected with three RF lines to steer the EC beams in the poloidal direction. The other is to control the EC beam in the toroidal and poloidal directions by two steerable mirrors.On the operation in 2000, the power of 1.5 to 1.6 MW for 3 s was successfully injected into plasmas using three gyrotrons. Local profile control was demonstrated by using the antennae. This capability was devoted to improve the plasma performance such as high Te production more than 15 keV and suppression of the MHD activities. In 2001, the fourth gyrotron, whose structure was improved for long pulse operation, has been installed for a total injection power of ~3 MW.

Functional Overview of the RF Power System for the LIPAc RFQ

Design, development, manufacturing, and test activities of the RF power system (RFPS) for Linear IFMIF Prototype Accelerator (LIPAc) were completed in Europe. Installation and commissioning activities were carried out at the International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility-Engineering Validation and Engineering Design Activities (IFMIF/EVEDA) site in Rokkasho, Japan. Challenging IFMIF requirements led to a number of innovations during design and development. Commissioning required a major effort on calibration and fine setting and led to development of new functionalities. The RFPS was validated under full power and 125-mA deuteron beam loading conditions, in the radio frequency quadrupole (RFQ), demonstrating good performance. This article is an overview about how technical challenges impacted the prototype RFPS design and its functional evolution during commissioning, cavity conditioning, and beam operation of the RFQ.

Development of a High-Current Superconducting Cavity for the Advanced Fusion Neutron Source and Licensing for HPGSL

Use of the Advanced Fusion Neutron Source (A-FNS) for testing materials in a future fusion DEMO reactor aims to provide an accelerator-based D-Li neutron source to produce high-intensity, high-energy neutron flux to test samples as possible candidate materials. As the accelerator system validation activity to demonstrate deuteron acceleration by the low-energy section of an IFMIF deuteron accelerator up to 9 MeV with a beam current of 125 mA in CW, a linear IFMIF prototype accelerator (LIPAc) was commissioned under the Broader Approach (BA) Agreement of the fusion program between Japan and the EU. A SRF linac containing eight half-wave resonators (HWRs) operating at 175 MHz and eight focusing solenoids to accelerate the energy from 5 MeV to 9 MeV and the licensing required by the High-Pressure Gas Safety Law (HPGSL) in Japan are reported.

Atomspheric discharge using a high power millimeter wave and its application to rocket propulsion

Microwave Rocket is an application of atmospheric discharge using a high power millimeter-wave beam. When a high power pulsed millimeter-wave beam is provided into a focusing reflector, atmospheric discharge arises in the vicinity of the focal point. The induced plasma absorbs the following part of the millimeter-wave pulse and propagates towards the beam source while generating a shock wave. The shock wave drives impulsive thrust. Because propulsive energy is provided by a microwave beam transmitted from outside, the vehicle is not necessary to load an energy source by itself. In this study, pressure histories in the thruster were measured under the 20Hz and 50Hz repetitive-pulse operation of 1sec duration. The shock wave is formed at each pulse and the thrust impulse is generated. Thrust impulses were estimated from pressure history. The thrust impulse was smaller than impulse at the first pulse and thrust impulse becomes steady at latter pulses. As a result, the steady operation was achieved in both frequencies. The 1sec duration operation with 50Hz repetition frequency was conducted with a thruster mounted on a movable stand. From the trajectory measured by a laser displacement gauge, the thruster was found to have moved at the constant acceleration motion. The acceleration and thrust force were estimated a=1.6m/s ² and F=3.4N, respectively. The thrusts estimated from the pressure history and from the trajectory showed a good agreement.
