Elastic Scattering of Low Energy Positrons by Atoms

Elastic scattering cross sections of low energy positrons (0 to about 40 eV) by Helium, Carbon, Nitrogen, Oxygen, Fluorine, Neon and Argon atoms are calculated by variational methods. The scattering potentials are taken to be the analytical approximations of different HARTREE potentials. Only s-wave is included. Comparisons with the available experimental datas of positron scattering by He, Ne an reveal that either a considerable strong polarisation potential will be required to bring the theoretical results at par with experiments or the formation of virtual positronium play a dominant role for this kind of elastic scattering.

K- and L-shell ionization cross sections of superheavy elements and fission probabilities of the actinides in micas by a few MeV protons

K- and L-shell ionization cross sections for a number of superheavy elements have been calculated for incident proton energies of a few MeV. It is noted that the K-shell ionization probability for an incident energy of about 15 MeV is of the same order of magnitude as that for the L shell with about 5 MeV protons. In additions, should such superheavies exist in a monazite sample K X-rays from the fission fragments from the actinides might be a competing factor with the L X-rays of superheavy elements.

Electron impact ionization of M-shell atoms

The modified BELL (MBELL) formula (Haque et al 2006 Phys. Rev. A 73 012708) has been applied to the M-shell ionization of neutral and ionic atoms to deduce the `generalized' parameters of the 3s, 3p and 3d orbits. A single set of parameters for each of these orbits and that previously determined for each of 1s, 2s and 2p orbits can reproduce satisfactorily the features of the total electron impact ionization cross-sections (EIICS) of 21 M-shell targets in the Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, Ar and Ca isoelectronic sequences. The generalized parameters are also found to provide an excellent account of the M-shell EIICS data of Pb, Bi and U atoms at relativistic energies in the range from 20 to 250 MeV.

Heavy-ion fusion using a parabolic barrier with Coulomb interaction

In this work, we describe the fusion mechanism between two heavy ions as penetration through a parabolic barrier in the presence of a proper Coulomb interaction with appropriate boundary conditions. The parabolic potential is matched to the Coulomb potential in order to avoid any discontinuity of the potential surface. The Schr\"odinger equations in the exterior and interior regions containing, respectively, the Coulomb and the parabolic potentials, are solved and the penetrability function is calculated from the logarithmic derivative at the matching radius. The theory is then applied to calculate the fusion cross sections for the reactions $^{16}\mathrm{O}$+$^{16}\mathrm{O}$, $^{12}\mathrm{C}$+$^{28,29,30}\mathrm{Si}$, $^{16}\mathrm{O}$+$^{24,26}\mathrm{Mg}$, $^{16}\mathrm{O}$+$^{28,29,30}\mathrm{Si}$, and $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$+$^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$ and are found to reproduce the data quite well.
