Interpretation of electrostatic noise observed by Voyager 1 in Titan's wake

During the Voyager 1 spacecraft flyby of Titan on November 12, 1980, an intense band of low‐frequency electric field noise was observed during the inbound wake crossing. This analysis shows that the noise is generated by a beam‐plasma interaction between the corotating magnetosphere of Saturn and newly created ions from the atmosphere of Titan. The analysis is based on plasma and wave measurements from Voyager 1 and reasonable assumptions. The results agree quite well with the observation. The analysis shows that the instability only occurs where the density of the corotational ions is comparable to the density of ions originating from Titan's atmosphere. The growth rate is high enough to generate the observed noise, and the calculated and observed frequency ranges are in good agreement. The asymmetry between the intensities in the inbound and outbound wake are explained by a simple model for the trajectories of ions from Titan's atmosphere.

Prediction of radio frequency power generation of Neptune's magnetosphere from generalized radiometric Bode's law

Magnetospheric radio frequency emission power has been shown to vary as a function of both solar wind and planetary values such as magnetic field by Kaiser and Desch. Planetary magnetic fields have been shown to scale with planetary variables such as density and angular momentum by numerous researchers. This paper combines two magnetic scaling laws (Busse's and Curtis Ness') with the radiometric law to yield ‘Bode's’‐type laws governing planetary radio emissions. Further analysis allows the reduction of variables to planetary mass and orbital distance. These generalized laws are then used to predict the power output of Neptune to be about 1.6 × 10 7 W ; with the intensity peaking at about 3 MHz .

Plasma processes associated with a rapidly moving magnet in the ionosphere

Plasma measurements in the vicinity of a large, high-intensity magnet moving rapidly through the ionosphere provide a unique opportunity to study in detail many of the plasma processes (reconnection anomalous diffusion, wave-particle interactions, etc.) that occur naturally throughout the solar system and in other astrophysical contexts, and an opportunity to develop a basic understanding and test theoretical models in new parameter regimes. The large, collisionless, wall-less plasma environment (the ionosphere) makes the investigation of considerable general interest to plasma physics, since several fundamental plasma processes, not otherwise accessible to laboratory experimentation, might be observed and measured quantitatively. Illustrative transport and instability processes have been examined.< >

The dynamics of the Jovian magnetosphere

The current status of our understanding of the dynamics of Jupiter's magnetosphere is reviewed. First, a brief summary is presented of the concepts and processes which were identified as being of probable importance by pre‐Pioneer 10 and 11 work (both theoretical and observational). The insights provided by the in situ Pioneer flights are then discussed. The Jovian magnetosphere consists of several relatively distinct regions: the inner magnetosphere, the intermediate magnetosphere, the outer magnetosphere, a transition region just inside the magnetopause, and the magnetosheath. The basic particle and magnetic field characteristics of these regions are summarized, and the dynamical processes which are currently thought to be significant in each of them are reviewed. Finally, some outstanding questions and problems are identified for future treatment based on Pioneer data or on data from the upcoming Voyager and Galileo missions.
