Objective:To investigate the effects of 20 methanolic extracts from Malaysian selected plants on CD18/11 a expression and phagocytosis activity of leukocytes using flow cytometry analysis.Methods:The effects of methanolic extracts on CD18/11 a expression and phagocytosis of leukocytes were measured by labelling the cells with CD18-fluorescein isolhiocyanaie and ingestion labelled with Escherichia coli-fluorescein isothiocyanate and then analyzed using flow cytometer.Results:About 12 out of 20 methanolic extracts of selected Malaysian medicinal plants significantly(P≤0.05) inhibited the CD18/1 la expression of leukocytes at both concentrations of 6.25 μg/mL and 100 μg/mL in dose dependent manner.The most active inhibitory was shown in Citrus aurantifolia(Christm.) Swingle and Alpinia galangal(L.) Willd.at dosage 100ug/mL.Moreover,the Orthosiphon aristatus(Blume) Miq(O.aristatus).showed the highest stimulatory activity at the concentration of 100 μg/mL.Other than that,four plant extracts significantly(P<0.05) rose the phagocytosis activities of leukocytes in dose dependent manner.However,Annona muricata L.and O.aristatus showed the highest stimulated activities at the 100 pg/mL concentration.Conclusions:The results suggest that methanolic extracts of Cirrus aurantifolia.Alpinia gaiangal,O.aristatus and Annona muricata are able to modulate innate immune system and can potentially be recognized as therapeutic agents for modulating immune system.

Field experiments were conducted in the dry seasons of 2001/2002 and 2002/2003 to study the major insect pests of onion using five dates of transplanting and five insecticidal spray regimes of λ-cyhalothrin in a randomised complete block design, replicated three times. Results indicate that thrips were the major insect pests of onion, which started colonizing onion plant in December, but the number was low until the third week of January and peaked in mid-March with up to 600 thrips/plant. In the course of the research, rainfall was recorded on 12 April, 2002 and 6 April, 2003 and this was observed to exert greater control of thrips than either planting date or the chemical (78%). In 2001/2002 season, there was a reduction in thrips population from 86-9 thrips/plant (89%) in zero spray in March transplant from 5-6 weeks after transplanting (WAT) before rising to 25 at 8 WAT, in February transplant the reduction was from 78-13 thrips/plant in zero spray. In 2002/2003 season only a slight increase in number of thrips/plant (12-15) was observed from 4-5 WAT in March transplant, but in February transplant not affected by rain there was increase was from 21-89. Where rainfall can be simulated, a greater control can be achieved, where thrips are washed away by the force of the rain, unlike chemical that may not reach the innermost leaves.
AIM: The aim was to investigate serum vitamin D (25-OH) level among females with hypothyroidism.MATERIALS AND METHODS: A case-control study (58 in each arm) was conducted in Arar Central Hospital, Kingdom Saudi Arabia. The cases were females with hypothyroidism, and healthy females were controls. TSH, thyroid hormones: Free T3 (FT3) and Free T4 (FT4) and haemoglobin levels were measured in all participants. Serum vitamin D (25-OH) level was measured using the spectrophotometry.RESULTS: While there was no significant difference in the age and haemoglobin level, body mass index (BMI) was significantly higher in the cases. Compared with the controls, cases had significantly higher TSH, had significantly lower T4, and there was no significant difference in FT3 and 25 (OH) vitamin D, [16.1 (8.8-26.7) vs. 14.0 (9.5-20.3 ng/ml; P = 0.577]. Linear regression showed no association between, age, BMI, haemoglobin, TSH, FT3, FT4 and the log of 25 (OH) vitamin D levels.CONCLUSION: There was no significant difference in vitamin D level among females with hypothyroidism and healthy controls.
Date palm is one of the most economically powerful fruit tree grown in Egypt. Although Egypt tops the list of date's product in the world. Egyptian date palm industry suffers from many constraints. Low-quality varieties and limited conventional propagation methods are the main obstacles. Extension of date palm plantations in various areas of Egypt and replanting trees to compensate loss due to diseases or human factors are reduced expected to lack adequate planting materials. The knowledge of the interplay between some fundamental medium parameters allows not only the optimization of the micropropagation system but also gives models to investigate and rationalize the process of induction and development of somatic embryogenesis itself. In vitro growth and development of produced embryos and plantlets has been improved by using of full MS salt strength. MS medium modification of some nutrients concentrations, i.e. NH4NO3(1237.5 mg/l) which recorded (13.20 and 9.60 embryos/explant for Medjool and Khalas respectively) at the end of three subculture. KNO3 which gave a higher score of mature somatic embryos (14.40 and 10.00 embryo/culture for Medjool and Khalas respectively) was obtained with 1425 mg/l KNO3 after three subcultures as compared to those obtained from any other treatment combination. The morphological response of somatic embryos production is controlled by some internal factors that fall under the influence of the genetic make-up of the plant and specialized for each genotype that is responsible for the production of somatic embryos (Medjool and Khalas cultivars). The genetic make-up is a decisive factor during somatic embryos production. There are differences between the two cultivars named, Medjool and Khalas. The produced somatic embryos at germination stage were transferred from the two experiments namely ammonium nitrate and potassium nitrate to multiplication and rooting stages for more in vitro growth for 12 weeks at three re-cultures. Individual shoots were cultured on modified MS basal medium in addition to IBA (1.0 mg/l), sucrose (30 g/l) and solidified with phyto-agar (8.0 g/l) for more in vitro growth and development. In vitro plantlets were transferred to acclimatization stage in plastic pots 5*18 cm diameter containing peatmoss, perlite and washed sand at equal volume. In vitro date palm plantlets produced from rooting stage grow well in the greenhouse during acclimatization stage without morphological abnormality. The growth and development of Medjool cultivar were better than Khalas during in vitro culture and ex vitro acclimatization.
Cotton(Gossypium hirsutum L.) plants produce more ethylene when subjected to abiotic stresses, such as high temperatures and drought, which result in premature leaf senescence, reduced photosynthetic efficiency, and thus decreased yield. This study was conducted to test the hypothesis that the ethylene-inhibiting compound 1-methylcyclopropene(1-MCP) treatment of cotton plants can delay leaf senescence under high temperature, drought, and the aging process in controlled environmental conditions. Potted cotton plants were exposed to 1-MCP treatment at the early square stage of development. The protective effect of 1-MCP against membrane damage was found on older compared to younger leaves, indicating 1-MCP could lower the stress level caused by aging. Application of 1-MCP resulted in reduction of lipid peroxidation, membrane leakage, soluble sugar content, and increased chlorophyll content, in contrast to the untreated plants under heat stress, suggesting that 1-MCP treatment of cotton plants may also have the potential to reduce the effect of heat stress in terms of delayed senescence. Application of 1-MCP caused reductions of lipid peroxidation, membrane leakage, and soluble sugar content, together with increases in water use efficiency(WUE), water potential, chlorophyll content, and fluorescence quantum efficiency, compared to the untreated plants under drought, suggesting that 1-MCP treatment of cotton plants may also have the ability to reduce the level of stress under drought conditions. In conclusion, 1-MCP treatment of cotton should have the potential to delay senescence under heat and drought stress, and the aging process. Additionally, 1-MCP is more effective under stress than under non-stress conditions.
The tape food is making through the fermentation process using yeast as a primary ingredient. A yeast supplement can be used to improve the fermentation process. In this study, the effect of garlic extract as a natural yeast supplement in making the yellow cassava tape was evaluated. A non-factorial completely randomized design with five treatments and four repetitions was performed as a research approach. The collected data were processed using an additive linear ANOVA model. The results show that a mixture with 3.0 g garlic extract highly improved the alcohol production for fermenting the yellow cassava tape. Based on the statistical analysis, Fcal (3.99) was higher than Ftab (2.90). The use of different garlic extract amounts exhibited a better improvement of the fermentation process than without the use of the garlic extract. An insufficient or excessive amount of yeast can affect alcohol production. Therefore, it is necessary to provide the exact garlic extract amount as the additional yeast supplement to produce cassava tape.
