On-chip integrated differential optical microring refractive index sensing platform based on a laminar flow scheme

We propose an on-chip integrated differential optical microring refractive index sensing platform which leverages laminar flow conditions. Close spacing between a sensing and a reference resonator, and sharing the same microfluidic channel allows the two resonators to experience similar environmental disturbances, such as temperature fluctuations and fluidic-induced transients, achieving reliable and sensitive sensing performance. We obtain a noise floor of 80.0 MHz (0.3 pm) and a bulk refractive index sensitivity of 17.0 THz per refractive index unit (RIU) (64.2 nm/RIU), achieving a limit of detection of 1.4×10−5 RIU in a 30 min and an 8°C window.

A theory of longitudinal modes in semiconductor lasers

A theory of longitudinal mode lasing spectrum of semiconductor lasers is developed which takes into account the nonuniform carrier and photon distributions and local gain spectrum shifts inside lasers with low end mirror reflectivities. The theory gives results consistent with observed longitudinal mode behavior in lasers with reduced facet reflectivity.

Multiple source frequency-modulated continuous-wave optical reflectometry: theory and experiment

We propose and demonstrate a novel approach to increase the effective bandwidth of a frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) ranging system. This is achieved by algorithmically stitching together the swept spectra of separate laser sources. The result is an improvement in the range resolution proportional to the increase in the swept-frequency range. An analysis of this system as well as the outline of the stitching algorithm are presented. Using three distinct swept-frequency optical waveforms, we experimentally demonstrate a threefold improvement in the range resolution of a three-sweep approach over the conventional FMCW method.

Self Trapping of Optical Beams in Photorefractive Media

We present a new type of spatial solitons, which are due to the photorefractive (PR) effect of a medium (1) . The shape of the soliton beam modulates the refractive index via the PR effect, which results in an exact compensation for the effects of diffraction, and causes the light beam to propagate with an unvarying profile. This index modulation is represented as a distribution of index gratings, each induced by the interference between two spatial (frequency) plane wave components of the light beam. Since the efficiency of this effect is independent of the absolute light intensity, these new solitons can be generated at very moderate light intensities. Moreover, a given soliton waveform can propagate unchanged in the medium, at very high or very low light intensities (and at all levels in between).

Linewidth narrowing attributed to superradiance has been observed in near bandgap radiation due to the recombination of impact ionized carriers in n-type CdTe at room temperature. The light emission was associated with a current breakdown that occurred at a threshold field of 12,000 V/cm in highly compensated n-type samples.

Slowing light with Fabry-Perot resonator arrays

We analyze the transmission of light through coupled-resonator optical waveguides in the form of evanescently coupled Fabry-Perot resonator arrays. We develop a transfer matrix method to calculate the amplitude and phase responses of the arrays. We also discuss the inclusion of optical gain in the system to compensate for losses in these structures. Owing to the compact length along the propagation direction in evanescently coupled arrays, large slowing factors of the order of 102-103 can be achieved even with a weak index contrast of ∼0.1%. The large slowing factor, coupled with weak index contrast, makes this structure a promising candidate for artificial slow light system.

A generic architecture for realizing neural networks is presented in which the synaptic interaction matrix is loaded in parallel into an electronic integrated circuit from a SLM. Three types of the electronic processors are described using CCD, CID and CMOS technologies respectively. The pros and cons of currently existing SLMs for this architecture are pointed out.
