Abstract Copper(II) acetate reacts with pyridine and quinoline bases in dioxane giving rise to adduct compounds, which were characterized by UV and EPR techniques. The reaction is formulated as follows: Cu2(OAc)4+L\oversetK21\ightleftharpoonsCu2(OAc)4L, where L denotes a free base and K21 is an adduct formation constant. Values of K21 range from 12 for quinoline or 2-picoline to 146 mol−1 dm−3 for 4-ethylpyridine. A linear free energy relationship is observed between the adduct formation and the protonation of bases in water except for sterically crowded bases.
For the title complexes, the value of formation constant K(CuL + A) is higher than that of K1(CuA2). According to the mechanistic consideration, log K(CuL + A) is calculated for regular Cu(II) complexes with neither special enhancement nor diminution of the stability constant. Then, the difference of log K(CuL + A)(obs) − log K(CuL +A)(calc) represents extrastabilization due to the hydrophobic interactions and the aromatic π−π interactions. The former has been found to be proportional to the free energy of the transfer of side chains of aminocarboxylates A. The discrimination between the hydrophobic and the aromatic π−π interactions has been attempted.

We propose a cost-effective 8-channel coarse WDM system employing uncooled fiber Bragg grating lasers with 600 GHz channel spacing. Gigabit Ethernet transmission experiment using a conventional EDFA supports feasibility of this system even over dispersion-shifted fibers.
Abstract Chromium and manganese less than 100μg. in 500-1000 ml. of solution are separated from a bulk of the solution by ferric hydroxide precipitation and the separation of chromium from manganese and iron can be carried out by the reduction of ferric iron to ferrous followed by the precipitation of aluminum hydroxide. And each element was determined colorimetrically using the silver peroxide as oxydant. No coprecipitation of chromate could be observed in this procedure.
