A deep ISOCAM survey in the SSA13

We present initial results of a deep mid-infrared survey conducted in the high galactic latitude field SSA13 with ISO. We have surveyed through the broad band filter LW2 (5-8.5 μm) of the mid-infrared camera ISOCAM to probe the near-infrared light at high redshift. The 80% completeness limit for point sources in the central 6 arcmin2 reaches 10 μJy at 6.7 μm. 65 sources are detected down to 6 μJy in 16 arcmin2. The integral galaxy number counts are 1.4 × 104 deg-2 at 10 μJy with the slope of -1.5. The integrated 6.7 μm light down to 6 μJy is estimated as 0.43 nWm-2sr-1. Our counts are consistent with the results in the HDF and the model prediction based on the K band local luminosity function. It suggests that the majority of the detected sources are E/S0 galaxies at z>1.

The role of H₃⁺in planetary atmospheres

Spectroscopic studies of the upper atmospheres of the giant planets using infrared wavelengths sensitive to the H3+ molecular ion show that this species plays a critical role in determining the physical conditions there. For Jupiter, we propose that the recently detected H3+ electrojet holds the key to the mechanism by which the equatorial plasma sheet is kept in (partial) co–rotation with the planet, and that this mechanism also provides a previously unconsidered source of energy that helps explain why the jovian thermosphere is considerably hotter than expected. For Saturn, we show that the H3+ auroral emission is ca. 1% of that of Jupiter because of the lower ionospheric/thermospheric temperature and the lower flux of ionizing particles precipitated there; it is probably unnecessary to invoke additional chemistry in the auroral/polar regions. For Uranus, we report further evidence that its emission intensity is controlled by the cycle of solar activity. And we propose that H3+ emission may just be detectable using current technology from some of the giant extra–solar planets that have been detected orbiting nearby stars, such as Tau Bootes.

The IRTF is a 3.0 meter, f/38, infrared optimized, cassegrain telescope operated under contract from NASA with the primary mission of providing ground-based support for NASA's planetary missions. We are currently in the design and construction phase of a 36 element, curvature-based, natural guide star, adaptive optics facility installation for the IRTF. System architecture will be modeled on the highly successful AO systems developed at the University of Hawaii. The system should achieve an AO efficiency, q >= 0.4. The Strehl ratio is expected to exceed 0.8 in the K band. We estimate a limiting guide star magnitude for full correction of m_R equals 14.4.

Infrared standards for ISO

We present N , 8.7 µm, 9.8 µm 12.5 µm and Q bolometry of 26 stars which were observed on the IRTF.These are primarily K giants which have been well measured at other wavelengths and are chosen to be single and non-variable.Hence the data presented provides a new homogeneous set of mid IR standards.As a test of part of the calibration strategy of ISO over this wavelength range, the zero points have been set using the Kurucz model grids (1993) to predict the mid IR magnitudes from near IR data.An analysis of the errors involved is presented and a comparison with more direct methods for the determination of the zero points suggest an possible error of 0.015 mags, although the source of this error is unclear as it is at the level of the uncertainty in the more direct methods.The effect of the SiO fundamental on the spectral energy distributions of K giants is discussed.
