Results of observations made during the solar eclipse of June 8, 1918, at the magnetic observatory at Antipolo, Manila

Table 1 shows the magnetic elements as well as the meteorological conditions, during the eclipse of June 8, 1918. The magnetic ordinates were read from the photographic records with the greatest accuracy every five minutes; the values of the base lines are only approximate. At the time the daily mean absolute values of the different magnetic elements were: Declination, D = 0° 34′.09 E; Horizontal Intensity, H = 38110γ; Vertical Intensity, Z = 10975γ.

Taxon-specific experiments were conducted between May and October 2002 during 3 intense blooms of A. taylori and A. catenella at different locations of the Mediterranean Sea. In addition, dilution experiments using chlorophyll a as a proxy for total phytoplankton biomass were used to estimate daily rates of net growth and mortality of the total phytoplankton community. A. taylori growth rates ranged from 0.04 to 0.67 d1 and mortality rates from 0.20 to 0.65 d1. Growth rates of Gymnodinium sp., an accompanying dinoflagellate species during the A. taylori bloom studied, were similar to those measured for A. taylori, whereas their mortality rates (0.58 to 0.82 d1) were slightly higher. A. catenella growth and mortality rates were balanced (0.24 and 0.44 d1 compared with 0.25 and 0.44 d1, respectively). The highest mortality rates (0.65 d1) were measured during the decline phase of 2 A taylori blooms. At the decline of the blooms, A. taylori and A. catenella showed considerable mortality, but microzooplankton grazing was not confirmed to be the main cause of the bloom termination. In general, growth was not limited by nutrients in the experiments. There were a few cases of a potential nutrient limitation in these areas and, in general, blooms were not conditioned by nutrients. When changes in biomass (chlorophyll a) were measured, non-linearity of data due to saturation was observed. The interpretation of these results required a split-function model. Saturated grazing (Gs) was 28.9 µg chl a l1 d1, during which the saturating phytoplankton population represented a chl a concentration of 16 µg l1 (Ps). These episodes encompass a variety of factors favouring bloom development, including near-shore nutrient enrichment, enhanced growth and low water renewal. During the summer of 2003 the development of a bloom was monitored at 2 nearby beaches, Peguera and Santa Ponça, located at the head of Santa Ponça Bay (Mallorca). Both sites are under the influence of the same physical regime—which is mainly wind-forced—and present relatively high inorganic nutrient concentrations for Mediterranean waters during summer (mean dissolved inorganic nitrogen > 1.2 µM and PO4 > 0.18 µM). Total dinoflagellate abundance exhibited a similar trend at both beaches, with remarkable outbursts in late June (>8 × 106 cells l–1). Water exchange calculations, based on 3D numerical modeling, yielded low average renewal rates at both sites (<0.08 d–1), and cell growth estimations suggested a significant increase in the specific growth rates during the blooming season associated with the seasonal temperature variation. We postulate that both the increased growth rates and the low wind-induced water renewal times are complementary factors and are of key relevance to the modulation of these blooms. Diagnostic analyses using a simple phytoplankton-zooplankton (PZ) model allowed us to observe the effect of growth rate and water renewal on bloom dynamics, and to identify a threshold condition for bloom occurrence. In contrast, the method that assesses the cell number variation of the population in diffusion chambers takes cell mortality into account. We compare the 2 methods for natural blooms of dinoflagellates (Alexandrium minutum, Alexandrium taylori, Ceratium furca, Dinophysis sacculus, Gymnodinium pulchellum and Gyrodinium corsicum) grown in various situations and locations and data reported elsewhere. The in situ potential growth rates showed great intraspecific variability. The use of the differences between the 2 methods as a measure of in situ cell lysis is discussed. This was the first time that an A. catenella bloom occurred in Catalan waters. Recurrent blooms have been observed annually from 1996 to 1999 during the warm season in this harbour. Since its first detection A. catenella has been recorded at an increasing number of stations along the coast, suggesting a progressive areal expansion. Two toxic, widespread events of this species occurred in non-confined coastal waters along 100 km of coastline during the summers of 1998 and 1999. We argue that the newly constructed harbours, serving as confined habitats for the development and maintenance of A. catenella, have contributed to the expansion of the dinoflagellate on the NW Mediterranean coast.
