Investigation of surface integrity in end milling of 55NiCrMoV7 die steel under the cryogenic environments

Cryogenic assisted machining is experiencing growing popularity and acceptance as a toxic-free, eco-friendly, hazardless process producing improved structural components. This article deals with the analysis of 3D and 2D roughness profiles, surface morphology, residual stress and microhardness of 55NiCrMoV7 die steel after end milling operation under dry, wet, cryogenic CO2 and LN2 cooling environments. Among different cooling methods, the cryogenic CO2 was seen enhancing the surface topography and morphology due to the presence of minimal wear track. The result indicates the production of an insignificant amount of residual stress in the machined surface by the cooling environments at a spindle speed of 1989 rpm and feed rate of 0.02 mm/rev. The surface microhardness values were higher under cryogenic conditions compared to dry and wet conditions. Cryogenic LN2 provided the highest microhardness value among the four cooling methods.

Effect of Al-SBA-15 Support on Catalytic Functionalities of Hydrotreating Catalysts. II. Effect of Variation of Molybdenum and Promoter Contents on Catalytic Functionalities

High surface area, ordered mesoporous SBA-15 and Al-SBA-15 were synthesized using published procedures and used as support for Mo and W catalysts promoted with Co and Ni. The molybdenum loading was varied on Al-SBA-15 from 2 to 12 wt %, and Co or Ni loading was varied on 8%Mo/Al-SBA-15 from 1 to 5 wt %. The support and catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Barett−Joyner−Halenda (BJH) pore-size distribution, Brunauer−Emmett−Teller (BET) surface area, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), and oxygen chemisorption. The characterization results indicated that hexagonal mesoporous structure is retained on Mo, CoMo, and NiMo catalysts. The TPR studies indicated that there are significant differences in Mo reducibilities and reducible species that are present on SBA-15 and Al-SBA-15 supported catalysts. The catalytic activities for thiophene, hydrodesulfurization (HDS), and cyclohexene hydrogenation (HYD) were carried out as a function of Mo and CoMo or NiMo loadings at 400 °C on sulfided catalysts. The results indicated that the molybdenum is dispersed well up to 8% Mo loading and 8 wt % loading is optimum for catalytic activities. Oxygen chemisorption correlated well with catalytic activity. The reducibilities of the catalysts and their relation to catalytic activities are discussed. A comparison of the physicochemical properties and catalytic activities of Mo and W catalysts supported on SBA-15 and Al-SBA-15 is made.

Characteristics of BaTiO₃–carbon nanotube composite synthesised by mechanical milling

Barium titanate–0.25 wt-% carbon nanotube nanocomposite was synthesised by the mechanical milling process. The nanocomposite was characterised by X-ray diffraction, SEM, thermal gravimetric analysis and LCR meter. The thermal stability of the composite was lower than that of pure barium titanate, which was attributed to the presence of trace amounts of sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate. The relative dielectric constant of the composite was significantly greater and was attributed to the Maxwell–Wagner polarisation effect.

Clarified Oil from Fluid Catalytic Cracking as an Additional Source of Group II Base Oil Components

Abstract Clarified oil (CLO) from a commercial fluid catalytic cracking unit was subjected to solvent extraction followed by solvent dewaxing and adsorption chromatography to analyze its various components for different end-use applications. The clarified oil was first solvent extracted using N-methyl pyrrolidone (NMP) to produce paraffinic rich raffinate (68.9 wt% yield). The raffinate thus obtained was dewaxed using methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) to get an oil of pour point 0°C. This dewaxed oil was then subjected to adsorption chromatography to determine group II base oil potential through yield v/s viscosity index (VI) curve. The results revealed that clarified oil has an actual potential of around 27.1 wt% of group II base oil components, suggesting that clarified oil can be used as an additional source of feed for production of group II base oil. This article also describes the potential of other components in clarified oil such as slack wax (24.2 wt%), aromatics (31.1 wt%), and low VI oil (17.6 wt%).
