Simulating Wide Bandgap FET Models in LTspice

Proper usage of FET models in simulation saves time and effort in developing power converters. This paper presents how gallium nitride or silicon carbide (SiC) FET models provided by their manufacturers are verified and utilized in LTspice XVII simulation. The simulation and experimental results of a double pulse test circuit using SiC FETs are compared to prove the preciseness and feasibility of the simulation.

Retrofit of Side Stream Columns to Dividing Wall Columns, with Case Studies of Industrial Applications

Side stream distillation column (SSC), which separates a ternary mixture, is a common energy-intensive process and received much scientific interest associated with a growing industrial demand. Recent studies and industrial applications have proven that advanced process intensification techniques using a dividing wall column (DWC) can significantly reduce the energy requirement for the separation of mixtures in distillation processes. This chapter reviews the design and application of SSCs and DWCs in both academia and industry. A systematic procedure for the retrofit of an SSC to a DWC is proposed to overcome the limited use of SSC due to the high purity restrictions as well as the low energy efficiency. Several industrial examples are introduced to show how effectively this approach contributes to the retrofit of SSCs for improving the energy efficiency and thus mitigating CO2 emission. Various issues such as the techno-economic analysis, column modification, construction, and operability are discussed briefly to provide more insight into the industrial application of DWC technologies in the retrofit of SSCs.

Effect of Antioxidant Properties and Biogenic Amine Contents of Salted Mackerel by the Concentration of Enzymatic Hydrolysate from Ecklonia cava

For preparation of high-quality salted mackerel using enzymatic extracts from Ecklonia cava (EEC) to process fresh mackerel caught off Jeju Island, the optimal concentration of EEC was investigated. There were no differences in proximate composition, salinity, Escherichia coli level, pH, volatile basic nitrogen content, histamine level, or peroxide value between salted mackerel samples prepared with different concentrations of EEC. However, the antiradical properties of salted mackerel, assayed by scavenging of DPPH free radicals, hydroxyl radicals, hydrogen peroxide, and alkyl radicals, increased with increasing concentrations of EEC. The optimal concentration of EEC for preparation of high-quality salted mackerel was 2% (w/w). Salted mackerel soaked in 2% (w/w) EEC was superior to commercial salted mackerel in antiradical properties, biogenic amine content, and other relevant chemical properties.

Soft-Switching Auxiliary Current Control for Faster Load Transient Response of Buck Converter

A control method for the auxiliary buck/boost converter is proposed to improve the load transient of the buck converter. The proposed technique maximizes the efficiency of the auxiliary converter by enabling the soft switching operation. The proposed control is free form complicated arithmetic operation, digital sampling, and load prediction, and is realized by simple analog components only. The design guidelines for achieving capacitor charge balance of the output capacitor during the transient are also presented. The simulation results revealed that the output voltage overshoot and settling time during the load step-down transient were 62 mV and 29.4 μs, respectively; however, in the case of conventional time-optimal control, these values were 666 mV and 57.2 μs, respectively, under the same condition. The prototype buck converter of which is input is 15 V, output is 3.3 V, switching frequency is 200 kHz had been built to prove the performance and effectiveness of the proposed technique.

CONSTRAINED OPTIMAL CONTROL OF LIQUID LEVEL LOOP USING A CONVENTIONAL PROPORTIONAL-INTEGRAL CONTROLLER

An analytical design method for a conventional proportional-integral (PI) controller is developed for the optimal control of the liquid level loop in order to explicitly handle important control specifications. The constrained optimal control problem for the liquid level loop is formulated and converted into an unconstrained optimization problem to find an optimal PI controller tuning rule. The proposed PI controller minimizes the rate of change of the outlet flow and the deviation of the level subject to two important constraints in the level loop: the maximum allowable rate of change in the outlet flow rate and the maximum allowable deviation of the level. The simulation results show that the constrained optimal control of the liquid level loop can be successfully implemented using a simple PI controller with the proposed design method.

Efficient Power Allocation Algorithms for Adaptive Spatial Multiplexing MIMO Systems

Water-filling 알고리즘은 적응 MIMO 시스템의 ergodic 용량을 최대화하는 효율적인 전력 할당 방식이지만 이산 변조 지쉬discrete modulation index)를 사용하는 실제의 시스템의 경우 과도한 잉여 전력(residual power)으로 인해 스펙트럼 효율이 감소하는 단점이 있다. 본 논문에서는 water-filling 알고리즘의 잉여 전력을 효율적으로 재할당 함으로써 적응 MIMO 시스템의 스펙트럼 효율을 향상시키는 새로운 전력 할당 알고리즘을 제안한다. 알고리즘의 성능을 검증하기 위해 터보 코드가 적용된 적응 MIMO 시스템을 구성하고 다양한 환경에서 시뮬레이션을 수행한다 시뮬레이션 결과, 레일리이 페이딩 환경에서 SNR이 20dB일 때 제안된 알고리즘의 스펙트럼 효율이 기존의 water-filling 알고리즘에 비해 대략 8.9% 향상됨을 알 수 있었다. While the water-filling algorithm is an efficient power allocation method that maximizes the ergodic capacity of adaptive MIMO systems, its excessive residual power causes spectrum loss in real systems employing discrete modulation indices. In this paper we propose new power allocation algorithms that improve the spectral efficiency of MIMO systems by efficiently reallocating the residual power of the water-filling algorithm. We apply the proposed algorithms to the adaptive turbo-coded MIMO system to verify their performance through computer simulation in various environments. Simulation results show that the spectral efficiency of the proposed algorithms is better than that of the water-filling algorithm by about 8.9% at SNR of 20dB in Rayleigh fading environments.

Model-based Advanced Control Solution Saves Energy on VCM Plant

Plant operations today are faced with ever-increasing pressure to improve efficiency, quality and productivity. Vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) is one of the many high-valued products made at LG Chem Ltd., and VCM production must be adjusted to meet upstream and downstream requirements. There is great incentive to provide a control solution that can improve VCM production and improve the stability of the unit operation. Using Honeywell advanced solutions, profit controller (robust multivariable predictive control technology (RMPCT)) in conjunction with Technip's EDC CRACK rigorous yield model, the LG Chem VCM II plant in Yeosu, Korea has experienced (1) VCM production increase when demand allows, (2) overall EDC cracking depth (conversion) increase without over-cracking the furnace passes, (3) energy consumption reduction (4) unit stability improvement and (5) plant uptime increase. The application of Honeywell's advanced solutions on LG Chem VCM II plant at Yeosu included the oxychlorination section, EDC purification section, EDC cracking section and VCM purification section. Honeywell profit controller design, practical installation experience, controller performance and results are discussed in this paper
