Critical Chloride Concentration of Rebar Corrosion in Fly Ash Concrete

Electrochemical impedance spectrum has been used in this work to study the critical chloride concentration for the rebar corrosion in fly ash concrete. The analysis and criteria for the critical corrosion point of rebar have been interpreted, and the surface morphology of the corroded rebar has been studied using SEM. The influences of the wet-dry cycling period and the fly ash content on the impedance spectra and the critical chloride concentration have been discussed respectively. It shows that the critical corrosion point can be precisely manifested by impedance spectra; the resistance of the concrete layer increases with increasing period of wet-dry cycling and increasing content of fly ash, which can be observed as translation of the spectra to the right on the complex plane; the critical chloride concentration tends to increase with increasing period of wet-dry cycling; the critical chloride concentration for rebar corrosion can be increased by a small dosage of fly ash in the concrete.

Effect of Air Entrainment on the Mechanical Properties, Chloride Migration, and Microstructure of Ordinary Concrete and Fly Ash Concrete

Air-entrained concrete has been extensively used in bridges and water conservancy projects in cold regions. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of air entrainment on the mechanical properties, chloride migration, and microstructure of ordinary concrete and fly ash concrete. Twelve concrete mixtures were prepared with two water-to-binder ratios (0.53 and 0.35), three levels of air content (no air entrainment; moderate air entrainment, with 4–5% air content; and high air entrainment, with 7–10% air content), and two levels of fly ash (no fly ash and 30% replacement of cement). The results indicated that, compared with ordinary concrete, the addition of an air-entraining agent (AEA) to fly ash concrete resulted in a greater decrease in compressive strength. Care must be taken when introducing artificial air bubbles into fly ash concrete because the bubbles will affect the mechanical properties. With proper air entrainment (air content of 4–5%), stable, closed, and well-distributed air bubbles are introduced into concrete so that the connectivity of the pore system is interrupted and chloride migration is consequently minimized. However, if the concrete contains a large amount of entrained air, a substantial amount of large and detrimental pores is introduced, causing air bubbles to overlap and merge, as well as causing additional chloride migration. This effect is more prominent in fly ash concrete.

Interfacial Properties Determine the Performance of Embedded Irox Ph Sensor in Cement Mortar

IrOx electrode has been reported to show promising application in pH determination in many environments. Once embedded in cement mortar, the performance of IrOx electrode is poor. The failed pH determination is due to inaccurate potential measurement of embedded IrOx electrodes, including potential difference across aqueous solution/mortar interface (E1), potential difference generated due to transport of charge carriers in pore structure of cement mortar (E2), and potential difference across interfacial transition zone (ITZ)/IrOx electrode interface (E3). E3 is confirmed to introduce serious errors in potential measurement, due to excessive resistance across ITZ/electrode interface. The microstructure of ITZ is studied by X-ray Computed Tomography (µXCT) and abnormal porosity is observed. Although the continuous pores can't be detected by µXCT, it is proposed the presence of abundant continuous pores is essential for a meaningful measurement of the IrOx electrode potential and the subsequent calculation of pH in pore water.

Swing Origami‐Structure‐Based Triboelectric Nanogenerator for Harvesting Blue Energy toward Marine Environmental Applications

Abstract The appearance of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG) provides a promising energy technology for harvesting abundant water wave energy. Here, the design and fabrication of a swinging origami‐structured TENG (SO‐TENG) tailored specifically for water wave energy harvesting are presented. The design incorporates an oscillating structure weighted at the bottom, inducing reciprocating motion propelled by the inertia of passing water waves. This reciprocating motion efficiently converts mechanical into electrical energy through the origami structure. By employing origami as the monomer structure, the surface contact area between friction layers is enhanced, thereby optimizing output performance. the swinging structure, combined with the placement of heavy objects, enhances the folding and contact of the origami, allowing it to operate effectively in low‐frequency water wave environments. This configuration exhibits robust power generation capabilities, making it suitable for powering small electronic devices in water wave environments. Furthermore, when applied to metal corrosion protection, the SO‐TENG demonstrates notable efficacy. Compared to exposed Q235 carbon steel, Q235 carbon steel protected by SO‐TENG exhibits a significant reduction in open‐circuit potential drop, approximately 155 mV, indicative of superior anti‐corrosion properties. It lays a solid foundation for water wave energy collection and self‐powered metal corrosion protection in marine environments.
