Analysis of Shunt Hybrid Active Power Filter for Mitigating Current Harmonics with Novel Approaches

Improving the power quality by mitigating the current harmonics in distribution system is essential for the safe operation of the power system.Shunt hybrid active power filter (SHAF) gives the optimum performance in mitigating the current harmonics as compared with other harmonic filters.In this research paper, two control techniques namely instantaneous reactive power theory (p-q) and synchronous reference frame theory (id-iq) are implemented to estimate the performance of SHAF under various balanced, unbalanced and distorted supply voltage conditions.The proposed SHAF was also tested under transient conditions.The effectiveness of fuzzy logic (Type-1&2) controller over PI controller in maintaining constant DC link capacitor voltage and mitigating current harmonics was also analyzed.Extensive MATLAB simulations have been carried out to compare the performance of the proposed SHAF under various supply and load conditions, control techniques and DC link voltage controllers.

Mitigation techniques followed in electrical integration of scanning Sky monitor payload

ASTROSAT is a scientific mission aimed at providing space based multi-wavelength observatory in the frontier areas of astronomy. It carries scientific instruments sensitive over a wide spectrum of wavelengths covering Visible, Ultra Violet, Soft X-rays and Hard X-rays over an energy band of 2-100keV. It accommodates five payloads to perform the task. Scanning Sky monitor (SSM) is one of the payloads designed to measure the soft X-rays over a band of 2-10keV for transient events. Electrical integration of SSM payload poses huge challenges in the form of design and implementation of electrical distribution system for rotating mechanism, grounding of electronics packages on Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) platform, problems faced during the testing in dis-assembled mode and measures taken to overcome the same. This paper discusses the above mentioned aspects from the perspective of electrical integration and testing.

Renewable energy source allocation of air-conditioner using fuzzy logic

The per capita consumption of power in India is insufficient compared to other developed countries in the world. Hence, the only way is the optimal utilization of available energy sources. But the difference between production and consumption of electrical energy, during summer is very high, due to large utilization of cooling machines like Air Conditioner, Air Coolers. In such case a Software industry, like BPO call center or any office with large server and many systems need to have a 24 hour working Air Conditioner. This leads to huge power consumption. Conservative measures need to be initiated and implement to decrease this gap. To restrain this situation the concept of DSM has begun in power system planning and management. Therefore this paper included Fuzzy logic applied to AC which results to calculate the actual hourly turn off period and reduction in energy consumption. By the optimal consumption of electrical power results increase saving by reducing the electricity bill and reduce the over load on live grid during peak hours and also calculate the cost of savings and payback period for the return of investment. In this paper, solar energy is used to run air conditioner. The cost of saving and payback period is calculated by considering only Photo Voltaic (PV) and Photo Voltaic with fuzzy controller. Results proved that usage of PV with fuzzy controller has better annual saving and lower pay back period compared with only considering PV.

Experimental Analysis of Partial Shading on Solar Panels With Theuse of Aluminium Reflectors

In the present-day world, energy is the key requirement without which man cannot persist. Solar energy is the one of the most significant sources of energy. Solar energy is very plentiful and endless when compared to other sources of energies. But Environment variation is becoming a worldwide concern. Shading effect due to trees, momentary of clouds, shadows of nearby obstacles, adjacent buildings and any other means is affected the enactment of solar panels. It causes substantial efficiency degradation, meanwhile shaded and non-shaded PV modules have large inconsistency in their maximum power points. In order to mitigate, the negative effect of each PV module from partial shading using by-pass diodes. However, this method alone may still face severe energy efficiency degradation caused by the energy loss. Reflectors can be used to increase the efficiency of solar panels. Reflector is used to increase the amount of solar radiation that the solar panels can be exposed with, therefore increasing the production of electric power. Aluminum foil reflector and stainless-steel mirror can also increase power output of solar panels. In this paper the efficiency method for PV systems under partial shading with and without the use of reflectors have been analyzed.

A wavelet based protection scheme for distribution networks with Distributed Generation

Integration of Distributed Generation (DG) in distribution power system would affect the fault current level and therefore the relay settings. This paper presents a protection scheme based on the Wavelet Transforms for the detection of the faults with and without DGs. Faults are simulated at each bus and the fault currents are analyzed with Haar wavelet to obtain detail coefficients of single level decomposition. Fault indices are calculated based on d-coefficients and compared with threshold for detecting the fault. The performance of the proposed protection scheme is tested by considering the variations in location and capacity of DG successfully.

Analysis of steel frames under fire environment

Abstract A numerical technique is developed using an implicit time‐marching scheme to study the deformation history of steel building frames in fire, by considering the change in the material properties due to rise of temperature, effect of creep and large deformations. A computer program has been developed for the analysis of plane frames based on the above algorithm using incremental and iterative procedures. Based on such a study, the length of time for which the structure can perform its function without either local or overall failure can be predicted.

Optimization of the Pulsed Current Gas Tungsten Arc Welding Process Parameters for alloy C-276 using the Taguchi Method

In the present work, a Design Of Experiment (DOE) technique, the Taguchi method was employed to bead on welding trials to optimize Pulsed Current Gas Tungsten Arc (PCGTA) welding process parameters of alloy C-276. A L9 orthogonal array of Taguchi design involving nine experiments for four parameters (pulsed current, background current, % on time, pulse frequency) with three levels was used. An analysis of the mean of signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio indicates that the depth of current is influenced significantly by the levels in the Taguchi orthogonal array. The higher the better response category was selected to obtain optimum conditions for depth of penetration. The optimum conditions were found to be 165 A pulse current, 77 A background current, 60% on time and 5 Hz pulse frequency. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) is performed to measure percentage contribution of each factor. The results show that the pulse current was most influencing parameter on the depth of penetration and % on time (23.28%) the next most influencing. Confirmation test was carried out to validate the results of Taguchi analysis; the result shows that there is good match between expected and predicted results.
