Aerodynamic Optimization of the Diffuser Towards Improving the Performance of Turbine and Exhaust Hood

Exhaust hood of large steam turbines is designed to recover the leaving kinetic energy of the last stage turbine while guiding the flow from the turbine to the condenser, which is of great importance to the overall performance of the steam turbine. The influences imposed by the strong flow interactions between the last stage turbine and the non-axisymmetric exhaust hood have not been taken into account properly in the current exhaust hood design approaches. The purpose of this paper is to optimize the diffuser in order to guarantee the aerodynamic performance of the turbine and the exhaust hood under the operational conditions. Considering the flow interactions between the turbine and the exhaust hood, the profiles of the diffuser end-wall were improved. The coupled turbine and exhaust hood calculations and the experiments were carried out to validate the effects of the optimization. It’s found that the redesigned diffuser can enhance the pressure recovery ability of the exhaust hood and increase the power output of the last stage turbine.

Investigations of Influential Factors on the Aerodynamic Performance of a Steam Turbine Exhaust System

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the influences of different parameters on the three-dimensional flow fields in the low-pressure steam turbine exhaust hood of a typical power station. The complex flows in both small-scale and full-scale turbine exhaust systems under different inlet flow conditions were simulated. The effects of inlet Reynolds number, inlet Mach number and fluid properties on the aerodynamic performance and flow fields in the exhaust systems were analyzed. The influential rules of inlet tangential flow angle distributions in the radial direction for a low speed small-scale model and a full speed full-scale exhaust system were summarized and compared. It is found that the inlet tangential flow angle at different radial position has different effects on the aerodynamic performance for both small-scale and full-scale exhaust systems. The influences of inlet Reynolds number on the aerodynamic performance depend on the inflow swirl conditions. The changing of inlet Mach number leads to the flow pattern variations in the exhaust system. The influences of fluid properties on the exhaust system performance are small.

Investigations on the coupling flow between full-scale last-stage steam turbine and low-pressure exhaust hood

In a condensing steam turbine, the last-stage turbine and the condenser are connected by the low-pressure axial–radial exhaust hood. The exhaust hood has a complex geometry to make the flow change direction by 90°, while guiding the flow from the turbine to the condenser. During the operation, strong flow interactions between the turbine and the exhaust hood cause the flow pattern to become extremely complicated. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the coupling flow between the full-scale last-stage turbine and the low-pressure exhaust hood of a 600 MW steam turbine under actual operation conditions. The simulational calculations of the flow through the last stage turbine and the exhaust hood were realized by coupling calculations of turbine stage and exhaust hood in an external iterative manner. Equilibrium wet steam was selected as the flow medium. The coupling flow fields under different operation conditions were simulated and analyzed. It is found that the distributions of the turbine exit flow fields at different circumferential locations vary remarkably. The profiles of swirl angle and total pressure distributions at the turbine outlet change with the decrease of the mass flowrate, which further influence the flow behavior in the hood and lead to the reduction of the performance.

Fast Prediction Method of Combustion Chamber Parameters Based on Artificial Neural Network

Gas turbines are widely used in industry, and the combustion chamber, compressor, and turbine are known as their three important components. In the design process of the combustion chamber, computational fluid dynamics simulation takes up a lot of time. In order to accelerate the design speed of the combustion chamber, this article proposes a combustion chamber design method that combines an artificial neural network (ANN) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). CFD results are used as raw data to establish a fast prediction model using ANN and eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost). The results show that the mean squared error (MSE) of the ANN is 0.0019, and the MSE of XGBoost is 0.0021, so the ANN’s prediction performance is slightly better. This fast prediction method combines CFD and the ANN, which can greatly shorten CFD calculation time, improve the efficiency of gas turbine combustion chamber design, and provide the possibility of achieving digital twins of gas turbine combustion chambers.

Investigations on the Aerodynamic Interactions Between Turbine and Diffuser System by Employing the Kriging Method

An exhaust diffuser determines the turbine outlet pressure by recovering kinetic energy. Conversely, the distributions of the total pressure and flow directions at the turbine exit affect the aerodynamic performance of the exhaust diffuser. As the output power increases gradually, the structure of the modern gas turbine becomes more compact. Consequently, the coupled effect of the flow in the last-stage turbine and the exhaust diffuser becomes increasingly obvious. Understanding the correlation between the flow field and the performance of the coupled system is of great significance. As a predictive regression algorithm, the Kriging method is widely used due to its high efficiency and unique mathematical characteristics. In this paper, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) numerical simulation is employed to investigate the interactions between the flow fields of the coupled system, and the corresponding datasets are obtained. Accordingly, the Kriging method is successfully employed to reconstruct the complex flow field, and a quantitative model describing the interaction between the two parts is established. This paper provides a detailed summary of the interaction between the flow field in the exhaust diffuser and the flow field at the outlet of the last-stage turbine. Through the prediction of the flow field, the conditions that induce the separation vortex on the casing of the diffuser are determined. Specifically, the slope of the total pressure change along the blade height near the casing is found to be k = −4.37.

Research on Fault Diagnosis Method of Bearing Based on Image Transformation of Time Series

There are many fault diagnosis methods by artificial intelligence.Most of them are similar: build multidimensional feature space by multiple signal in a single moment, and then diagnosing the faults by the classical machine learning method.These methods have achieved good results, but they do not consider the continuity of time.The time series of signal is an important basis which is reflecting equipment faults.For this problem, we transform the different time series of one fault signal to image set by GAF method, and then classify different classes from image set by CNN method.Random Forest, Support Vector Machine and Artificial Neural Network are applied as the contrast.Experimental results show that: "GAF + CNN" method have an advantage over contrast methods in the same bearing vibration signal dataset.
