Plant Introduction in India during Pre- and Post-CBD Periods–An Analysis

An analysis of the germplasm import into India before and after the adoption of Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) was undertaken with the objective of finding the impact of signing this legally binding instrument by contracting countries. Plant Genetic Resources are at NBPGR for research purpose, quarantine examination and onward transmission to the users. The records of such imports five years prior to the signing CBD (1988–92) and five years after CBD (1997–2001), with a gap of 1993–1996 as transit phase were analysed. The impact was studied separately for CGIAR centres national gene banks in different group of crops. An overall decrease of about 14.5% in introduction of germplasm was observed during post-CBD period. This decline has, however, not affected imports from CG centres. The decrease in introduction from National Gene Banks in different countries suggest a cautious approach for sharing of germplasm. Countries like USA, Germany, Canada, UK and Italy still remain the main supplier of germplasm to India.

Ileo-cecal Duplication Cyst Masquarading as Intussusception

Duplication cysts are rare congenital anomaly of gastrointestinal tract. Majority of them present in early infancy, with bleeding or intestinal obstruction. The commonest location of these cysts is ileum. However, ileo-cecal duplications are extremely rare. Presented herein is a case of an infant with acute intestinal obstruction due to ileo-cecal duplication cyst. The clinical and radiological signs were similar to more commonly seen intussusception and diagnosis was established intraoperatively.

Use of information and communication tools for north-Eastern region of India: A paradigm shift

Information and Communication Tools (ICT) have recently gained a groundswell of interest and are an important and significant research area for many researchers around the world. However, fewer have achieved greater success in the effective use and its implementation of such tools, whereas the majority are still in the path of progress and especially in the remote areas, the percentage of adoption is quite low due to knowledge and lack of resources and other known and hidden constraints. The adoption of such technologies can change the face of Education, Agriculture, Medical and even hundreds of more which can improve the economic status of farmers. Regular Training to the poor farmers and scientist- farmers interactions in the selected areas can bring a confidence in the poor neglected farmers of remote areas can further enhance their usage and their empowerment can strengthen their socio-economic condition and reduced technology gap too. These tools can reduce the timings of Implementation of Integrated Pest Management strategies and build up the confidence in poor neglected farmers. A research work relating to the importance of the Information era with respected to Integrated Pest Management in the North-eastern part of the country has been proposed at the ICAR- National Research Centre for Integrated Pest Management, New Delhi.

Comparative therapeutic efficacy of imidocarb and diminazene aceturate against Babesia gibsoni in dogs

The present study estimated the therapeutic management of Babesia gibsoni in the dog population located in and around Jabalpur (M.P.). A total of 2103 dogs that were brought to Veterinary Clinical Complex, College of Veterinary Science & A.H., Jabalpur and different government and private clinics of Jabalpur (M.P.) were screened for a period of six months (June 2021 to November 2021). 503 dogs found suspected based on clinical history viz. anorexia, fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, bleeding from the nostrils, pale of the mucous membrane, maelena, anaemia, jaundice, weight loss etc. and detection of the organisms in the blood of infected dogs and out of which 76 samples were haemoprotozoan positive amongst which 26 were B. gibsoni positive. For the therapeutic study, a total of 12 dogs confirmed for B. gibsoni were divided randomly into two treatment groups i.e., T2 and T3, each comprising of 6 dogs. Dogs of group T2 and T3 were treated with Doxycycline @ 5mg/kg bodyweight, PO, q12 h for 30 days +Metronidazole @ 15 mg/kg bodyweight, PO, q12 h for 30 days +Imidocarb @ 6.6 mg/kg bodyweight, S/C, two doses14 days apart and Doxycycline @ 5mg/kg bodyweight, PO, q12 h for 30 days +Metronidazole @ 15 mg/kg bodyweight, PO, q12 h for 30 days + Diminazene aceturate @ 5 mg/kg bodyweight, I/M, two doses 48 h apart respectively. The best therapeutic response was observed in the T2 group. A blood smear examination reveals a lower the degree of Parasitemia on the 15th-day post-treatment and on the 30th-day post-treatment blood smear was negative in all affected dogs.

Benign joint hypermobility syndrome: a hospital-based study from northern India

To study the frequency, demography, clinical features and response to treatment of benign joint hypermobility syndrome (BJHS) in a rheumatology clinic at a tertiary referral centre in India and to ascertain the association of hypermobility with musculoskeletal symptoms. Consecutive adult patients with Beighton score of 5 or more and conforming to Brighton criteria were recruited from the rheumatology clinic over 18 months. Detailed clinical and laboratory work-up was carried out including ophthalmologic and echocardiographic evaluation. Treatment comprised reassurance, physiotherapy and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs/analgesics. Pain score and patient global assessment were measured at 0, 2 and 12 weeks. The association of hypermobility with musculoskeletal symptoms was ascertained in a case-control study performed separately. Hypermobility (Beighton score ≥ 5) was observed in about 20% (405/2050) of rheumatology referrals. However, only about half of them (204/2050) met the Brighton criteria for BJHS. One hundred BJHS patients (mean age 30 ± 9.4 years, female : male = 2.2 : 1) were recruited for detailed study. All had gross hypermobility and knee was the commonest joint involved. Rheumatoid distribution of painful joints often raised suspicion of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) but objective clinical and laboratory findings of RA were lacking. Sixty-one had received a wrong diagnosis before referral (RA, ankylosing spondylitis, rheumatic fever) and 22 had been taking long-term penicillin prophylaxis for suspected rheumatic fever. About 40% had negligible symptoms after 12 weeks while others continued to suffer from mild to moderate symptoms with no synovitis or joint damage. Case-control study showed greater likelihood of presence of hypermobility amongst the patients referred to the rheumatology clinic with odds ratio = 3.23 (CI = 1.86–5.63, P= 0.000). BJHS is common in Indians and is often mistaken for other rheumatic disorders. There is 3.2 times more likelihood of finding joint hypermobility amongst patients referred to a rheumatology clinic, thereby confirming its association with musculoskeletal complaints.
