Reactions of Molybdenum and Tungsten Phosphenium Complexes with Sulfur and Selenium

The reactions of the phosphane [(Me3Si)2N](Ph)PCl with NaCpMo(CO)3 and NaCpW(CO)3 give the respective metallophosphenium complexes Cp(CO)2M{P(Ph)[N(SiMe3)2]} (M = Mo (4a), W (4b)). The subsequent reactions of 4a,b with S and Se produce unexpectedly different products: Cp(CO)2(S)M{P(Ph)[N(SiMe3)2]} (M = Mo (7a)); Cp(CO)2MSP(Ph)[N(SiMe3)2] (M = W (7b)); Cp(CO)2MSeP(Ph)[N(SiMe3)2] (M = Mo (8a), W (8b)). The compounds have been fully characterized by elemental analyses and spectroscopic data, and the molecular structures of 4a, 7a,b, and 8a have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. The molecular structure of 7a displays a long, terminal Mo−S bond, while 7b and 8a contain M−E−P three-membered rings.

Water Adsorption in Interfacial Silane Layers by Neutron Reflection: 1. Silane Finish on Silicon Wafers

Abstract The interaction of water with a common commercial glass cloth silane finish is explored by neutron reflection. The silane coating is applied to the oxide surfaces of polished silicon wafers. Detailed profiles of D2O within the ∼80 Å silane finish layers are measured after exposure for 48 hours to a saturated D2O atmosphere at either 22°C or 80°C. The nature of the interaction of D2O with the finish layer is probed by exposing the samples to vacuum following adsorption. In both samples, the profile of adsorbed D2O is composed of at least two distinct layers: a thin (< 30 Å) D2O -rich layer adjacent to the interface, and the bulk of the film in which only a low level of D2O is present. The amount of adsorbed D2O is greater for the sample conditioned at 80°C than for the sample conditioned at 22°C. In addition, adsorbed D2O within the interfacial layer is removed more slowly during evacuation for the sample conditioned at 80°C than for the sample conditioned at 22°C. These latter two results are interpreted as indicating increased hydrolysis of siloxane bonds for the samples conditioned at 80°C. Surprisingly, after several months in vacuum the remaining D2O redistributes within the layer, accumulating within a very thin layer at the interface in both samples. The nature of this redistribution is not understood.

Low density, microcellular, dopable, agar/gelatin foams for pulsed power experiments

Low-density, microcellular foams prepared from the natural polymers agar and gelatin have been developed for pulsed-power physics experiments. Numerous experiments were supported with foams having densities at or below 10 mg/cm{sup 3}. For some of the experiments, the agar/gelatin foam was uniformly doped with metallic elements using soluble salts. Depending on the method of preparation, cell sizes were typically below 10 microns and for one process were below 1.0 micron.

Close up views of the photomicrographs from Figure 4 show an association between the PC-3 cells and the wild type DRG neurites (Figure 4A), but fewer associations between the PC-3 cells and CCL2 -/- DRG neurites (Figure 4B). B. DRG's were harvested from wild type and CCL2 -/- mice and explanted in 15µl of growth-factor reduced Matrigel. Photographs were taken every other day. Neurite outgrowth rate was measured by measuring the area covered by the neurites and subtracting the center of the DRG (MetaMorph, Molecular Devices, Sunnyvale, CA).
