Influence of controlled water supply on shoot and root development of young peach trees

Three controlled water supply treatments were applied to 1-year-old peach trees grown in root observation boxes. The treatments were: I(0), growth medium maintained at 50% field capacity; I(1), water supplied when daily net tree stem diameter change was negative or zero for 1 day; I(3) as for I(1) except that water was applied after net daily stem diameter change was negative or zero for 3 consecutive days. Trees in treatment I(0) had the greatest mean daily first-order shoot growth rates, and trees in treatment I(3) had the lowest shoot growth rates. Because leaf production rate (apparent plastochron) of first-order shoots was unaffected by treatment, differences in shoot length were due to differences in internode extension and not to the number of internodes. Trees in treatment I(0) had a greater number of second-order shoot axes than trees in treatment I(1) or I(3). Furthermore, an increase in the rate of growth of the first-order shoot axis was associated with an increased tendency for branching (i.e., the development of sylleptic second-order shoots). Increased leaf length was also associated with more frequent watering. Trees in treatment I(0) had the greatest root lengths and dry weights, and this was attributed to a greater number of first-and second-order (lateral) root axes compared with trees in the I(1) and I(3) treatments. The extension rate and apical diameter of first-order roots were reduced by the I(3) treatment. The density of second-order roots along primary root axes was not affected by any of the treatments.

Specific micromorphometric reactions of fruit trees to water stress and irrigation scheduling automation

Continuous recordings of diameter variations using LVDT gauges were made on potted or field grown apple and peach-trees to seek a reliable indicator of water stress. The first and general indication of water stress was the decrease and stoppage of daily growth in stem diameter. When water was sufficiently available in the soil, maximum daily shrinkage was a versatile indicator of transpiration stream intensity. When water availability in the soil strongly decreased two kinds of specific daily shrinkage patterns appeared: a) 'peach-tree' pattern, whose maximum daily shrinkage markedly increased as water stress became more severe, and b) 'apple-tree' pattern, where maximum daily shrinkage under severe water stress was smaller than its well watered value. Parameters for irrigation automation designs are proposed by processing both daily growth data and daily shrinkage data.

Modeling the response of peach fruit growth to water stress

We applied a semi-mechanistic model of fresh matter accumulation to peach fruit during the stage of rapid mesocarp development. The model, which is based on simple hypotheses of fluid flows into and out of the fruit, assumes that solution flow into the fruit increases with fruit weight and transpiration per unit weight, and decreases with the maximum daily shrinkage of the trunk, which was used as an indicator of water stress. Fruit transpiration was assumed to increase with fruit size and with radiation. Fruit respiration was considered to be related to fruit growth and to temperature. The model simulates variability in growth among fruits according to climatic conditions, degree of water stress and weight of the fruit at the beginning of the simulation. We used data obtained from well-watered and water-stressed trees grown in containers to estimate model parameters and to test the model. There was close agreement between the simulated and measured values. A sensitivity analysis showed that initial fruit weight partly determined the variation in growth among fruits. The analysis also indicated that there was an optimal irradiance for fruit growth and that the effect of high global radiation on growth varied according to the stage of fruit development. Water stress, which was the most important factor influencing fruit growth, rapidly depressed growth, particularly when applied late in the season.

Pilotage de l'irrigation dans un verger de pêchers précoces à l'aide de tensiomètres et de mesures de variations de diamètre de tiges

En verger de pechers, il est difficile d'evaluer la quantite d'eau a apporter et le moment ou il faut le faire. Outre la methode de mesure de l'evapotranspiration, les methodes basees sur l'observation du sol et de la plante peuvent egalement permettre de piloter l'irrigation. Par suite, deux telles methodes ont ete testees afin d'evaluer l'impact de leur utilisation sur le rendement et la qualite des fruits d'un cultivar de pecher precoce. Materiel et methodes. Un verger experimental homogene de Royal Glory a ete divise en deux parties : dans l'une l'irrigation a ete basee sur des mesures tensiometriques, dans l'autre, elle a ete pilotee par mesures micromorphometriques. Resultats et discussion. Par rapport a la methode tensiometrique, l'irrigation programmee par la methode micromorphometrique induit une reduction significative de la quantite d'eau appliquee sur une periode de 4 ans (sans affecter le rendement et le poids moyen du fruit) et tend a accroitre les sucres solubles totaux du fruit, a diminuer l'heterogeneite du diametre des fruits a l'interieur de l'arbre et a reduire les surfaces de section de tronc des pechers. Ainsi la restriction d'eau occasionnee par l'utilisation de la methode micromorphometrique dans le verger a permis d'ameliorer la qualite et, par consequent, la valeur commerciale de la production de peche. Conclusion. La methode micromorphometrique apparait efficace pour optimiser le pilotage de l'irrigation en verger de pecher. En prenant en compte ces resultats, la methode tensiometrique doit etre amelioree de facon a etre mieux adaptee aux besoins en eau du pecher.
