Saturation of beam-plasma instability in a lossy plasma

For the beam-plasma instability with ω > ωce in the limit of a cold, weak beam effective energy transfer to the plasma is observed. This is found to agree with the one-dimensional beam trapping calculation when linear cyclotron damping is included.

Electron beam transport in a weak plasma

The propagation of an electron beam through a dilute plasma is studied experimentally. A beam is injected into a low pressure gas (P≃10−6 Torr) resulting in sufficient ions to neutralize the beam so that space charge blow-up does not occur directly. However, a low frequency beam-drift mode is unstable, which results in a radial displacement of the beam. This can produce sufficient space charge to stop beam propagation. The experimentally observed threshold is in agreement with linear theory, and the limiting current agrees with an estimate of the space charge limit for this geometry.

Review of electron-beam heating of magnetic-mirror confined plasmas, with application to the Tandem Mirror Experiment

This report reviews results from early electron-beam heating experiments and more recent basic beam-plasma physics experiments as well as present theoretical understanding. We find tha rather simple electron-beams could be employed on the Tandem Mirror Experiment (TMX) at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory to carry out electron heating experiments.

Surface production of negative hydrogen ions

Negative hydrogen ions are produced by electron tunnelling from a solid surface (converter) to hydrogen atoms moving away from the surface. A simple theoretical model of this process indicates reasonable ionization probability (>0.1) for low initial energy of the H atoms (order of 1 eV) when the work function of the converter is smaller than 1.5 eV. Low initial energy guarantees low H- ion energy spread. It also makes it possible to use a variety of compounds for reducing the converter work function. Experimental studies of Cs oxide films (work function 0.9 to 1.2 eV) are presented. Production of H- ions by backscattering thermally produced H atoms from a thick film of Cs oxide is demonstrated.

Identification and correction of antisymmetric field components in combined function magnets

This paper investigates the identification and correction of antisymmetric field components in combined function magnets. A measurement procedure is developed to identify small field components on the order of ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$ in the plane of the reference path. Furthermore, a method is proposed to compensate them by surface correction coils on the poles of the magnet. As an example, the measurement and compensation of antisymmetric field components in a $90\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}$ bending magnet of the double sided microtron HDSM at the MAMI-C electron scattering facility is simulated with the help of the electromagnetic design code TOSCA.

Measurement of the evolution in phase space of an electron beam interacting with a plasma

The result of a measurement of the locus of the beam electrons with reference to energy, position and wave phase, is described. The experiment follows theory until saturation. Subsequently the beam and wave do not follow prediction in that the wave decays and the beam particles become trapped at velocity smaller than the wave velocity. Two candidates for the untrapping are the transverse electric field and cyclotron damping, both of which are present in this wave. The damping transfers energy into the plasma, while the transverse electric field transfers energy into transverse motion of the beam electrons. Thus, it is possible that longitudinal beam energy is lost finally to the plasma and/or transverse beam energy.

Enhanced emission of positive cesium ions from zeolite

The thermionic emission of positive cesium ions from zeolite has been significantly increased in the pulsed regime due to the adsorption of electronegative gas atoms at the zeolite emitting surface. Extracted current densities are described by the Richardson equation, J0 = A(T)1/2 exp(−Φ0/KT). Adsorption of fluorine and chlorine rich gases lowers the Richardson work function Φ0 and the pre-exponential factor A. Specifically, fluorine adsorption reduces Φ0 to less than 0.1 eV and the pre-exponential factor by eight orders of magnitude. This results in over a 1000 fold increase of J0 at 800 °C. The changes are caused by a negative outward dipole layer at the emitting surface due to chemisorbed fluorine atoms. The coverage of these fluorine atoms obeys the Langmuir-Freundlich isotherm equation. Exposure of zeolite to oxygen results in an increase of up to an order of magnitude in A only. This is attributed to the production of additional active ion sites at the emitting surface.
