Introduction to the Handbook on Religion in China

The Introduction presents the Handbook's chapters by elaborating two central points that affects them all. The first is that much ritual practice in China is not 'religion' as conveyed by the monotheistic religions and that some of the political ceremonies of state are secular rituals, particularly where they merge with officially endorsed heritage and the making of a modern civilized self. The second point is that ritual and religion in China flourish under the constraints, which have become particularly fierce in the years before publication of this Handbook, of a controlling and secular state. State religious policy and restraints have therefore to be elaborated first, but they are shown to have paradoxical and unintended effects in each chapter thereafter.
