Effect of solvation on the electron spin resonance spectrum of the superoxide ion

The solvation of superoxide ions by protic solvents has been studied by e.s.r. spectroscopy. It is concluded that strong hydrogen bonds lift the degeneracy of the π-orbitals, with solvation being effectively confined to one of these orbitals. It is suggested that, when aqueous solutions are frozen, phase separation occurs so that the gz value (2.11) is not characteristic of the aquated ion. By extrapolation from data for aqueous methanolic glasses, we obtain a gz value of 2.065 for the aquated ion.

Molecular Environment Effects on Two-Photon-Absorbing Heterocyclic Chromophores

Over the past several years, organic molecules exhibiting significant two-photon absorbance and subsequent up-converted fluorescence have been of intense interest for a wide variety of applications including data storage, imaging, and optical limiting. However, the establishment of structure−property relationships for some asymmetric molecules has been hindered by the sensitivity of these nonlinear optical properties to the local molecular environment and to the pulse width of the incident radiation. To understand the influence of the local molecular environment on the excited states of these two-photon-absorbing molecules, the linear absorbance, the single-photon-excited photoluminescence, and the two-photon-excited photoluminescence of a series of heterocyclic dyes are examined. The stabilization of the longest-lived one-photon-excited state by the local molecular environment can be described by mean field interactions with solvent molecules as given by the Lippert equation. Because the same stabilization dominates the two-photon-induced longest-lived excited state, the influence of the local molecular environment on the two-photon luminescence can be predicted using the Lippert equation and one-photon experiments. These results support models that suggest excited-state absorption is the primary cause of sensitivity of the "effective" two-photon cross-section to the pulse-width and the local molecular environment.

<title>Ultrafast holographic recording using two-photon-induced photopolymerization</title>

Previously, we have reported the first demonstration of holographic two-photon induced photopolymerization (H-TPIP) in the construction of transmission holograms. This technique relies on the coupling of a two-photon absorbing chromophore and a photocurable optical resin. Several different systems have been successfully explored; all involving varied reaction pathways. Since the initial report, we have also expanded this technique to reflection holograms and some bulk structures. While the applications for this process are widely ranging, the underlying physical mechanisms still require a great deal of investigation. In this work, we report on some of the photo-physical mechanisms involved in the H-TPIP technique. Specifically, we will report on evidence for mass-transport phenomena, and the role of localized thermal loading. We also discuss a preliminary model, which examines the coupling between the chromophore's excited state population, initiation of the polymerization reaction, and localized thermal deposition.

Molecular weight dependence of the sintering‐flow behavior for particulate polystyrenes

Abstract A series of particulate anionic PSs having M̄ n values from 1900 to 350,000 has been observed visually on a hot‐stage microscope at heating rates from 0.2 to 10 K/min. The temperature range over which the particles sinter, coalesce, and flow onto the glass slide is relatively narrow and reproducible. The temperature corresponding to a specific optical appearance is designated T f (for flow temperature) and appears to represent an isoviscous state. It decreases as M̄ n −1 below M c , and increases as M̄ n (or possibly M̄ w above M c , where M c is the entanglement molecular weight T f values at 10 K/min are only slightly below T II temperatures observed by DSC and by torsional braid analysis. A plot of log heating rate versus T f −1 with only five points for M̄ n = 17,100 is clearly non‐Arrhenius and appears to follow a Vogel or WLF‐type equation. T f is greater than and distinct from T g at all heating rates except as M̄ n becomes less than about 2000 where the two processes tend to merge. T f is independent of the several substrates tested: glass, Mylar, carbon, mica, Al, Al 2 O 3 , and PS. Globule formation which occurs just below T f is probably a surface tension phenomenon. Its temperature, T g1 , decreases as M̄ n −2/3 at M̄ n > M c . It appears to represent an iso ‐surface tension state. Origins of the endothermic peak observed by DSC on powder on first heating and the endothermic slope change found with melted films on subsequent heatings are proposed. Observations of T g1 and T f were made on poly( p ‐methylstyrene) and poly( p ‐tert‐butylstyrene) but will be reported elsewhere.
