Abstract Background The role of sodium taurocholate co-transporting polypeptide (NTCP), in facilitating the binding of Hepatitis B virus (HBV) on surface of hepatocytes is well documented. Expression of NTCP in extra hepatic cells may make these cells susceptible to HBV infection and support cellular proliferation akin to hepatocytes. Placental replication of HBV is not well explored . In this study we have assessed the expression of NTCP and HBV replication markers (HBeAg, HBcAg, and HBV DNA) in placental cells, to investigate if these cells act as host for HBV. Methods Fourty one HBsAg+ve pregnant women along with 10 healthy controls were enrolled after obtaining informed consent. The HBV DNA in placenta was detected by qPCR using primers for X and core ORF. Expression of NTCP in placenta was analyzed by qRT-PCR and further investigated by immunohistochemistry (IHC) along with HBV replication biomarkers, HBeAg, and HBcAg. Results HBsAg positive subjects were divided in two groups on the basis of viral load [High Viral Load (HVL) Group; viral load ≥ 2000IU/ml, Low Viral Load (LVL) Group; viral load <2000IU/ml] according to INASL guidelines 2018. HBV infected females showed increased expression of NTCP in trophoblasts of placenta compared to control group (HVL 3.69±0.13 Vs Control 1.74±0.15, p=0.0117). Furthermore, significant difference in NTCP expression was also observed between HVL and LVL group (HVL 3.69±0.13 Vs LVL 1.98±0.17, p=0.022) and positively correlated with the maternal HBV DNA load. Membranous and/or cytoplasmic immunostaining of NTCP, and cytoplasmic staining of HBeAg and HBcAg in trophoblasts along with presence of HBV DNA indicated that trophoblasts are not only susceptible to HBV infection but may also be a site for viral replication. Conclusions This is the pioneer study, which demonstrates expression of NTCP on placenta which may facilitate the entry of HBV. Furthermore, the study establishes the presence of HBeAg in placenta of patients without circulating HBeAg, indicating these cells may act as replication host/reservoir. This pioneering finding hints at the possibility of exploring the potential of NTCP blocking strategies in preventing vertical transmission of HBV.

Linear distribution of multiple subcutaneous nodules or ulcers along the course of lymphatics, classically seen in lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis, has been observed in a number of other infections like localized cutaneous leishmaniasis, cutaneous tuberculous and non tuberculous mycobacterial infections, Pasteurella tularensis, Scopulariopsis blochi, Nocardia brasiliensis, yaws and syphilis. A case of borderline tuberculoid leprosy with multiple cutaneous nodules corresponding to resolving nerve abscesses in a sporotrichoid pattern is being reported.

Explicit and Implicit Self-Esteem of Narcissists and Non-Narcissists

It has been observed that people with narcissistic personalities often display an exaggerated sense of self-regard and superiority. To understand this, the present research aims to study the explicit and implicit self-esteem of narcissists and non-narcissist. 90 male students of the age range 20-23 years were taken as the sample. NPI, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and Initials-preferences test were conducted on these students. A significant difference was found between the explicit self-esteem of narcissists M=(20.48, SD=5.73) and non-narcissists M=(17.28, SD=3.10). concluding that narcissists have high explicit self-esteem as compared to non-narcissists, which clarifies the reason behind their overt grandiosity. Whereas, there is no difference between the implicit self-esteem of narcissists and non-narcissists scores. Other factors besides self-esteem, can be studied to understand narcissistic behavior.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most serious cancer in man other than prostate and lung cancer, and second most common type of cancer in women right behind breast cancer.It is caused by hereditary, natural and nutritional factors.Many treatments of colorectal cancer are available such as surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy and immunotherapy with many hazardous side effects.Plant derived compounds has the ability to suppress colorectal cancer in different ways such as delaying cancer development, decreasing reliability on radiation therapy and chemotherapy.Secondary metabolites such as terpenoids, alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolics, diosgenin, rosmarinic acid, carnosic acid, luteolin, anthiricin and kaempferol have cytotoxic ability against colorectal cancer.These bioactive compounds can affect the regulation of cell cycle, initiate apoptosis by activating caspase and affect cell signaling pathways.Conventional drugs have been utilized to treat cancer due to their antioxidant nature, anti-invasive properties and anti-angiogenic properties.This review highlights the secondary metabolites of medicinal plants that are used for treating colorectal cancer and their mechanism of action through metabolomics perspective.

Clinical Effectiveness of Autologous Platelet‐Rich Plasma and Peptide‐Enhanced Bone Graft in the Treatment of Intrabony Defects

Background: The goal of periodontal therapy has always been the regeneration of lost attachment apparatus. The use of platelet‐rich plasma (PRP) plus anorganic bovine‐derived matrix and peptide 15 (ABM/P‐15) for periodontal regenerative therapy offers a potentially useful modality for treating periodontal osseous defects. However, it is unknown whether a combination of these materials enhances the outcome of periodontal regenerative therapy. Therefore, this study was carried out to compare the effectiveness of the two regenerative techniques (autologous PRP plus ABM/P‐15 versus autologous PRP) in treating intrabony defects in humans by analyzing the clinical and radiologic parameters. Methods: Using a split‐mouth design, 28 intrabony defects were treated with autologous PRP (control) or a combination of autologous PRP and ABM/P‐15 (test). Clinical parameters such as plaque index, sulcus bleeding index, probing depth, attachment level, and gingival marginal level were recorded at baseline and 9 months postoperatively. Hard tissue measurements such as defect fill, defect resolution, and change in alveolar crest height were also recorded using spiral computed tomography (CT). Results: A statistically significant difference was observed in all clinical parameters in the test group compared to the control group. Furthermore, spiral CT images revealed significantly greater bone fill in the test group. Conclusions: A combination of PRP plus ABM/P‐15 was more effective than PRP alone in the treatment of intrabony defects. Further studies using a larger sample size are necessary to confirm the results of the present study.
