To overcome strength-ductility trade-off in carbon nanotubes (CNTs) reinforced Al matrix composites, we developed a novel and controllable strategy via a combination of different length of CNTs and fine/coarse-grained matrices. Microstructure analysis showed that Al 4 C 3 nanorods about 100 nm were distributed in the fine grain zone (FGZ), while CNTs of micron length were distributed in the coarse grain zone (CGZ). Different sizes of reinforcements play different strengthening roles, and the bimodal grains can effectively coordinate deformation, thereby achieving a good combination of strength and plasticity. Heat treatment does not affect the microstructure of the FGZ, but significantly affect the CNT/Al interface bonding in the CGZ. Heat treatment at an appropriate temperature can further improve the strength of the composite by improving the interface bonding. When the heat treatment temperature is too high, the coarsening of Al 4 C 3 in CGZ will deteriorate the mechanical properties of the composite.

Solvent-Free Carbon Nanotube Nanofluid-Reinforced Copper Matrix Composites with Enhanced Mechanical Properties

Solvent-free nanofluid displays liquid-like function in the absence of solvent at room temperature by grafting organic salts on the surface of materials. In this study, carbon nanotube (CNT) fluid is synthesized by a chemical grafting method for the preparation of CNTs/copper (Cu) composite powder. After hot-pressing and sintering, the CNTs-fluid/Cu composites are further treated by hot rolling to improve their mechanical properties. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the as-obtained composites are systematically characterized by SEM, TEM, FTIR, Raman, rheological analysis, hardness and tensile tests. It is demonstrated that the optimal mechanical properties of the composite can be achieved by adding 0.75[Formula: see text]wt.% CNTs nanofluid. The yield and tensile strength of the resultant material are about 397.6[Formula: see text]MPa and 517.5[Formula: see text]MPa, respectively, which are 282% and 156% higher than that of pure Cu. Meanwhile, its hardness value reaches 152.2[Formula: see text]HV, which is increased by 27% and 38% of pure Cu and the unrolled sample, respectively. Such significant property improvement is conjointly contributed by load transfer strengthening, Orowan strengthening, matrix strengthening and thermal mismatch. This study provides a new insight into the interface structure to enhance the mechanical properties of metal matrix composites.

RGO reinforced Cu foam with enhanced mechanical and electromagnetic shielding properties

With a unique cellular structure to enhance the multi-reflection and multi-absorption properties of electromagnetic waves, metal foam is considered a new type of electromagnetic shielding material that can also be used for lightweight structural applications such as energy absorption and shock attenuation. This work introduces reduced graphene oxide (RGO) to reinforce Cu foam for the purpose of improvement of the foam's mechanical and electromagnetic shielding properties. After the preparation stage of the electrodeposition and heat treatments, the RGO was observed to uniformly disperse in the Cu foam matrix and nano-sized Cu2O particles formed at the interface. This resulted in improved mechanical properties and electromagnetic shielding performance compared to the pure Cu foams. The primary shielding mechanism was deduced as absorption loss.
