Effects of Sublethal Concentrations of the Herbicide, Glyphosate, on Embryonic Development of the Indian Major Carp, Labeo rohita

Aquaculture is one of the fastest growing sectors worldwide. Currently, 50% of global fish consumption is provided by aquaculture. In India, the major cultivated fishes are Labeo catla, Labeo rohita, Cirrhinus mrigala, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, Ctenopharyngodon idella, and Cyprinus carpio. Among these, L. rohita is a widely consumed fish. We aimed to study the effect of one of the most widely used herbicides, glyphosate, on the embryonic development of L. rohita. The 96 h LC50 of glyphosate for L. rohita embryos was found to be 20.89 mgL−1. The embryos were exposed to 1/10th, 1/5th,, and 1/3rd concentrations of LC50 for 96 h. The observed deformities included abdominal curvature, kink formation in the tail, yolk sac edema, pericardial edema, and improperly flattened swim bladder. Besides, we could observe a reduction in pigmentation at 96 h and a decrease in heart rate at 24, 48, 72, and 96 h. All these deformities led to the mortality of embryos. This study indicated that the herbicide (glyphosate) can adversely affect the natural population of the Indian major carp, L. rohita.

Single Genetic Stock Revealed by Microsatellite Markers Among Wild Populations of Cirrhinus mrigala from Peninsular India

Cirrhinus mrigala (mrigal) is one of the Indian major carps widely cultured in the whole Indian subcontinent. Population genetic structure of this species from Peninsular Rivers of India is lacking. Among DNA markers, microsatellites are excellent tools to evaluate genetic variation of populations. In this study, genetic variation of six peninsular riverine mrigal populations was evaluated using seventeen microsatellite loci. In analyzing 288 samples, the number of alleles ranged from 4 to 27; observed heterozygosity from 0.595 to 1.00, expected heterozygosity from 0.586 to 0.959 and inbreeding coefficient (FIS) ranged from -0.034 to 0.02. Exact test for Hardy Weinberg disequilibrium revealed that one locus was not in equilibrium across the rivers except one. The AMOVA analysis revealed the main source of genetic variation to be within the population (94.54%) than among the populations (5.46%). The Nei’s genetic distance and structure analysis depict river Narmada and Mahi populations are different from the four east coast rivers. The overall Fst (0.05462) data showed moderate differentiation among the six populations. The results of this study provide essential information to resource recovery and help in delineating populations for fishery management. Besides, the data will provide a valuable baseline for further investigations on the geographic distribution of this commercially important fish species.

Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are naturally occurring or synthetic molecules present in an ecosystem that have the potential to alter the production, release, transport, metabolism, binding, action, or elimination of natural hormones in the body.They act by mimicking endogenous hormones, antagonizing normal hormones, altering the natural pattern of hormone synthesis or metabolism, or modifying hormone receptors.The chemicals, particularly disrupting the reproductive system, can be androgenic, anti-androgenic, estrogenic or anti-estrogenic.This review provides a brief overview on spermatogenesis, disruption of spermatogenesis and effects of various EDCs on hormones involved in spermatogenesis.EDCs affect spermatogenesis in two ways, by affecting the development and function of male gonads or by disrupting the synthesis and action of hormones involved in spermatogenesis, such as, GnRH, gonadotropin, dihydroandrogen, 11-ketotestosterone, estrogen, and progesterone.

Effect of turmeric and ginger supplementation on immunity, antioxidant, liver enzyme activity, gut bacterial load and histopathology of broilers

Day-old broiler chicks (182) were distributed randomly to 7 treatments with 2 replicates. Treatments were T1 (control), basal diet; T2, basal diet + turmeric powder (TP) (0.5% of basal diet); T3, basal diet + TP (1% of basal diet); T4, basal diet + ginger powder (GP) (0.5% of basal diet); T5, basal diet + GP (1% of basal diet); T6, basal diet + TP + GP (0.5% TP + 0.5% GP); T7, basal diet + TP + GP (1% TP + 1.0% GP). The experiment was continued for 35 days. Immunity, antioxidant, liver enzyme activity, gut bacterial load and histopathology of broilers were conducted at fifth week of age. Higher cellular response against PHA-P was recorded in T3 and T7. Higher antibody titre against SRBC was recorded in T3. The weight of lymphoid organs did not differ significantly. Significantly higher erythrocyte malondialdehyde (MDA) level was recorded in T1. Significantly higher alanine amino transferase (ALT) levels were found in T1 and T7. Significantly higher aspartate amino transferase (AST) level was found in T1. Higher total bacterial count and lower E. coli count were recorded in group T3 and lower total bacterial count was recorded in T7. In group T1, liver showed mild congestion to mild cellular swelling and varying degree of vacuolar degeneration. From this study, it may be concluded that supplementation of 1% turmeric in ration either alone or in combination with 1% ginger improved the immunity, antioxidant status and gut health of broilers.

Biometrical indices of ovary and surface follicular distribution of native swamp buffaloes of coastal Odisha

The study was conducted on 50 native buffaloes of Odisha from slaughter house of Nandankanan Zoo to evaluate, ovarian biometry and certain relevant parameters of graffian follicles. The mean values of length, width, thickness and weight of left and right ovaries were recorded. The average numbers of large, medium and small follicles ofboth the ovaries were counted. The overall dimensions of the right ovary and follicular count was non significantly greater than the left counterpart.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Cirrhinus mrigala was determined using the polymerase chain reaction. The mitogenome (16,594 bp) has the typical vertebrate mitochondrial gene arrangement, including 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, two rRNA genes and one control region. The overall base composition on the heavy strand was as follows: A: 32.0%, G: 15.5%, C: 28.0%, T: 24.55% and the A+T content: 56.5%. The control region contains a dinucleotide repeat motif, (TA)14, a termination-associated sequence and three conserved sequence blocks. These mitogenome sequence data would play an important role in population genetics and the molecular taxonomy of cultivable cyprinids in India.
