Reconstructing phase space of injection beam based on the measurement of accumulated beam: A novel tomography algorithm and its applications

The measurement of phase space has always been an important topic in the field of accelerator physics, playing an indispensable role in understanding the beam dynamics. The phase space distribution of the injected beam is crucial for optimizing the multiturn accumulation injection process in synchrotrons. However, directly and accurately measuring the phase space distribution is a challenging task. In this study, we propose an innovative tomographic algorithm based on the measurement data of the accumulated beam profile obtained from the wall current monitor (WCM) in a synchrotron, to reconstruct the longitudinal phase space of the injected beam. Simulations were conducted for various initial distribution scenarios, and the results showed that this algorithm can achieve a difference of about 4% in the rms momentum spread between the initial and reconstructed phase space distribution of the injected beam. This algorithm has been applied to the China Spallation Neutron Source and successfully measured the momentum spread of the injected beam. Machine studies considering the phase error of the injected beam showed a high consistency between the reconstructed beam profiles and the measurement results from the WCM on Rapid Cycling Synchrotron. The research results demonstrate that this algorithm can be an effective approach for measuring the momentum distribution of the injected beam in a synchrotron. Furthermore, this method also has the potential to be extended to reconstruct the transverse phase space of the injected beam. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Design of the resonance extraction scheme for the upgrade project of the China Spallation Neutron Source

Abstract In the upcoming upgrade project of the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS II), the beam power is planned to increase to 500 kW. One important potential application with the enhanced beam power is the proton radiography based on resonance extraction of the proton beams. In this article we present a scheme of beam resonance extraction for the proton radiography, by using the skew sextupole magnet, the trim quadrupoles(QTs), the rf kicker, and the septum magnet in the rapid cycling synchrotrons (RCS) of the CSNS II. It is shown that with the adoption of the proposed scheme, a sufficient large number of particles 1.0 × 10 10 in 20 bunches with 410 ns time interval can be extracted from the RCS, which satisfies the requirement of the proton radiography.

Beam Dynamics Studies for the CSNS DTL Due to a Quadrupole Fault

The China Spallation Neutron Source(CSNS) accelera-tor systems is designed to deliver a 1.6GeV, 100kW pro-ton beam to a solid metal target for neutron scattering research. It consists of a 50keV H⁻ Ion Source, a 3MeV Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ), an 80MeV Drift Tube Linac (DTL), and a 1.6GeV Rapid-cycling Synchro-tron (RCS). The DTL consists of four tanks. In 2017, three of four tanks have been commissioned successfully, and beam has been accelerated to 61MeV with nearly 100% transmission. However, in July 2017, one quadrupole contained in the drift tube was found fault, the beam transmission decreased to 80%. A new lattice has been designed and the 100% transmission has recovered. In January 2018, the last tank of the DTL has been commissioned and accelerated the H⁻ beam to the design energy of 80MeV for the first time. The commissioning progress and the measurement results before and after lattice adjustment will be presented.

RESISTIVE WALL INSTABILITY IN CSNS/RCS *

Rapid Cycling Synchrotron (RCS) of the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) is a high intensity proton accelerator, with average beam power of 100kW. The collective effects caused by the coupling impedance may be the limit to beam power. The impedance estimation for components on beam line shows that the resistive wall impedance and its instability are more serious than any others. Based on the impedance budget, the instability is theoretically estimated. A simple resistive wall wake field model is used to simulate the bunch oscillation and obtain the growth time. In this simulation model, the continuous resistive wall wake field is concentrated to one position in the ring and the long bunch is sliced into many micro-bunches. By tracking the dynamics of the macro-bunches, the transverse growth time are obtained. The simulation results are also confirmed the restriction to instability by natural chromaticity.
