Designing Twin Memristor-Based Multiscroll Systems by Varying the Flux Variable of Memristor

Memristor, as a nonlinear element in nanometer size, is feasible to generate chaotic signals. Especially, it can improve the randomness of the signals and the complexity of chaotic systems. A novel multiscroll hyperchaotic system based on the flux-controlled memristor is designed. Its twin system with a different topological structure is obtained by varying only the flux variable of the memristor, which is a considerable difference from other chaotic systems existing in the literature. Scroll numbers of the proposed system and its twin, especially, are sensitive to the system parameters. To further investigate the characteristics of the system and its twin, their behaviors with respect to the strengths of the memristor, simulation time and coexistence of multiscroll hyperchaotic attractors are analyzed. Moreover, complex dynamical behaviors of the system and its twin are analyzed by phase diagrams, Poincaré cross-sections, Lyapunov indexes, power spectra, 0-1 test diagrams, and time series. Finally, a novel image encryption scheme is proposed based on the system and its twin. The system and its twin have independent key spaces, and the proposed algorithm makes them have an intersection, which greatly improves the key spaces. In addition, the security and reliability of the image encryption algorithm are demonstrated by different security analysis methods, including correlation analysis, robustness analysis and information entropy test. The results of all experiments prove that the proposed image encryption scheme is superior to other existing ones.

A Simple Method for Constructing a Family of Hamiltonian Conservative Chaotic Systems

Conservative chaotic systems (CCSs) have unique advantages over dissipative chaotic systems (DCSs) in the fields of secure communication and pseudo-random number generators (PRNGs), etc. However, there are relatively fewer reports on CCSs than DCSs. To this end, this paper proposes an effective method for constructing a family of Hamiltonian conservative chaotic systems (HCCSs) by letting any three of the four sub-bodies denoted by 4D generalized Euler equations share a rotation axis. From theoretical analysis to experimental verification, one of the proposed HCCSs is studied thoroughly to demonstrate the effectiveness of this method. The example system has an infinite number of equilibrium points, which belong to either centers or saddles, resulting in hidden chaos. Besides, through the bifurcation diagram, parametric chaotic set, and Lyapunov exponent, richly dynamic behaviors related to parameters are displayed. Moreover, the 3D phase portraits verify that the Hamiltonian energy is conservative. Numerous energy-related coexisting orbits are discovered in this system, such as the coexistence of quasi-periodic orbits, chaotic orbits, and chaotic quasi-periodic orbits. Furthermore, the breadboard-based circuit is implemented to illustrate the HCCS's physical feasibility. Finally, the PRNG based on the HCCS has excellent randomness in terms of NIST and TESTU01 test results.

Designing a Novel Memristor-based Chaotic System Pumped by Cosine and its Application in Image Encryption

Memristor, a nonlinear element with nanometer size, can be applied in chaotic system and thus enhancing complexity of the chaotic system. Therefore, a novel memristor-based 4D multi-scroll chaotic system via cosine is successfully designed in this letter. The main feature of this system is that the scroll number are sensitive to initial values, the transient simulation time, the flux variation of memristor and the strength of memristor, which is a significant difference from other chaotic systems reported before. Furthermore, the chaotic characteristics have been declared by using time series, 0-1 test chart, and Poincare maps. Besides, the number of scrolls can be controlled by designing a state feedback controller to select the ideal number of scrolls, and such a method for controlling the scroll number is extremely meaningful in suppressing the nonlinearity of chaotic systems. Finally, an algorithm for image encryption is proposed based on the bitwise and cross-transition between adjacent pixels. Both confusion and diffusion are related to the memristor-based chaotic system. Many statistical tests and security analysis show that this algorithm has a good security performance, which can be compared with other recently proposed image encryption algorithms.

A Multiring Julia Fractal Chaotic System With Separated-Scroll Attractors

Fractal and chaos are two major phenomena in nonlinear systems. A few combinations of chaos with fractal for generating multiscroll attractors are reported. Thus, based on Chua multiscroll chaotic systems, a novel multiring chaotic system is proposed via Julia multifractal processes. The main purpose of this work is to make up for the deficiency of various fractal processes to further improve the performance of chaotic systems. A new class of multiscroll attractors is generated by combining different fractal processes, including symmetrical multiring attractor, separated multiring attractor, and nested multiring attractor. Furthermore, dynamic behaviors of the fractal chaotic system are analyzed by means of Lyapunov exponents and bifurcation diagram to indicate that the system exhibits chaotic characteristics. Experiments on the spectrum entropy (SE) complexity and image encryption performance demonstrate the good performance of the proposed fractal-based attractors. To verify the feasibility of multiring chaotic system, the various fractal-based attractors generated are implemented by micro controller unit (MCU), and the separated multiring attractors are observed on the digital oscilloscope.

Memristor-based hyper-chaotic circuit for image encryption*

The memristor is a kind of non-linear element with memory function, which can be applied to chaotic systems to increase signal randomness and complexity. In this paper, a new four-dimensional hyper-chaotic system is designed based on a flux controlled memristor model, which can generate complex chaotic attractors. The basic dynamic theory analysis and numerical simulations of the system, such as the stability of equilibrium points, the Lyapunov exponents and dimension, Poincare maps, the power spectrum, and the waveform graph prove that it has rich dynamic behaviors. Then, the circuit implementation of this system is established. The consistency of simulation program with integrated circuit emphasis (SPICE) simulation and numerical analysis proves the ability to generate chaos. Finally, a new image encryption scheme is designed by using the memristor-based hyper-chaotic system proposed in this paper. The scheme involves a total of two encryptions. By using different security analysis factors, the proposed algorithm is compared with other image encryption schemes, including correlation analysis, information entropy, etc. The results show that the proposed image encryption scheme has a large key space and presents a better encryption effect.

A novel conservative system with hidden flows evolved from the simplest memristive circuit

Over the past few decades, the research of dissipative chaotic systems has yielded many achievements in both theory and application. However, attractors in dissipative systems are easily reconstructed by the attacker, which leads to information security problems. Compared with dissipative systems, conservative ones can effectively avoid these reconstructing attacks due to the absence of attractors. Therefore, conservative systems have advantages in chaos-based applications. Currently, there are still relatively few studies on conservative systems. For this purpose, based on the simplest memristor circuit in this paper, a non-Hamiltonian 3D conservative system without equilibria is proposed. The phase volume conservatism is analyzed by calculating the divergence of the system. Furthermore, a Kolmogorov-type transformation suggests that the Hamiltonian energy is not conservative. The most prominent property in the conservative system is that it exhibits quasi-periodic 3D tori with heterogeneous coexisting and different amplitude rescaling trajectories triggered by initial values. In addition, the results of Spectral Entropy analysis and NIST test show that the system can produce pseudo-random numbers with high randomness. To the best of our knowledge, there is no 3D conservative system with such complex dynamics, especially in a memristive conservative system. Finally, the analog circuit of the system is designed and implemented to test its feasibility as well.
