Using the quartz crystal microbalance to study macro- and nanoscale bubbles at solid–liquid interfaces

We show here that macro- and nanoscale bubbles can be detected by Quartz Crystal Microbalances (QCM) submerged in liquids. QCM's are high quality factor oscillators that generate a shear wave when submerged in a fluid. The damping of the oscillation by the fluid causes the resonance frequency of the QCM to shift, and a viscosity can be calculated from the frequency shift. Since the shear wave generated is so short, this is a near-surface viscosity as opposed to a bulk viscosity. When bubbles cling to the QCM face the viscosity of the liquid as measured by the QCM will be reduced from the true bulk viscosity of the liquid. In this study we have submerged QCM's with both hydrophilic (gold or silicon dioxide) and hydrophobic (octadecanethiol) surfaces in water distilled to varying degrees, including seltzer water and vacuum distilled DI water. The seltzer water has visible macroscale bubbles, and so we were able to correlate video acquired of the QCM submerged in the seltzer water with the viscosity data to directly link the presence or absence of a bubble to a change in the measured viscosity.

Quantum Enabled Radar Sensing

We present a quantum enabled networked radar system that incorporates an optical atomic clock to provide the radar systems with both an ultra-low noise oscillator and time synchronization. Characterization of the photonic microwave generator against traditional oscillators currently used in the radar systems is presented. Near-future developments of the radar network are discussed.

Transportable optical atomic clocks for use in out-of-the-lab environments

Abstract Recently, several reports with a strong focus on compact, nonstationary optical atomic clocks have been published, including accounts of in-field deployment of these devices for demonstrations of chronometric levelling in different types of environments. We review recent progress in this research area, comprising compact and transportable neutral atom and single-ion optical atomic clocks. The identified transportable optical clocks strive for low volume, weight and power consumption while exceeding standard microwave atomic clocks in fractional frequency instability and systematic uncertainty. Some transportable clock projects additionally address requirements for metrology or serve the joint technology development between industrial and academic stakeholders. Based on the reviewed reports on nonstationary optical atomic clocks, we suggest definitions for transportable, portable and mobile optical atomic clocks. We conclude our article with an overview of possible future directions for developments of optical clock technology.

Whole system radar modelling: Simulation and validation

Abstract The ever‐expanding horizon of radar applications demands solutions with high‐end radar functionalities and technologies and is often limited by the available radar equipment, cost and time. A practical method to tackle the situation is to rely on the modelling and simulation of radar systems based on the user requirements. The comprehensive system‐level modelling of a pulsed Doppler radar in MATLAB/Simulink consisting of all the fundamental blocks in the transmit chain, the environment, the receive chain, and the data processing chain is presented in this article. The first half of the article discusses the high‐fidelity simulation of each building block in the radar model. In the second half of the article, the range‐Doppler plot generated from the high‐fidelity radar model is compared and validated using the range‐Doppler plot from a real radar trial. The radar phase noise plays a crucial role in the detection of slowly moving, low radar cross‐section targets in the presence of strong clutter. The article also briefly discusses the effects of radar oscillator phase noise in the range‐Doppler plot. The validated, fully flexible radar model has the advantage of supporting the addition of further building blocks and optimising the parameters based on user requirements.

A Novel Laser Activated Atom Source for Portable Strontium Optical Lattice Atomic Clocks

Atomic clocks have been in common use since the 1950s and over this period the clock community has had two main goals: increasing the performance of the clocks and increasing their portability. At Birmingham we aim to compress a strontium optical lattice clock, a clock with an extremely high accuracy, into a portable package. Many novel approaches need to be employed to allow such a clock to operate with a favorable SWaP while maintaining the low instability and uncertainty that makes optical clocks a desirable frequency standard. The focus of this work is to use laser activation of a strontium compound as the atomic source for the clock. Previously work published by this group [1] demonstrated that it is possible to release the strontium atoms from strontium oxide successfully load a magneto-optical trap (MOT).

Direct comparisons of European primary and secondary frequency standards via satellite techniques

We carried out a 26-day comparison of five simultaneously operated optical clocks and six atomic fountain clocks located at INRIM, LNE-SYRTE, NPL and PTB by using two satellite-based frequency comparison techniques: broadband Two-Way Satellite Time and Frequency Transfer (TWSTFT) and Global Positioning System Precise Point Positioning (GPS PPP). With an enhanced statistical analysis procedure taking into account correlations and gaps in the measurement data, combined overall uncertainties in the range of $1.8 \times 10^{-16}$ to $3.5 \times 10^{-16}$ for the optical clock comparisons were found. The comparison of the fountain clocks yields results with a maximum relative frequency difference of $6.9 \times 10^{-16}$, and combined overall uncertainties in the range of $4.8 \times 10^{-16}$ to $7.7 \times 10^{-16}$.

Development of Quantum Enabled Staring Radar with Low Phase Noise

Staring radar provide a significant capability against the detection of low observable targets such as drones and birds. Their performance in strong urban clutter can be impacted by system limitations due to phase noise resulting from imperfections in the reference oscillator. This paper describes a new class of Quantum oscillator that can provide an alternative clock reference signal for the staring radar which can lower the phase noise and improve sensitivity against strong clutter at low frequencies. Preliminary results are presented to baseline empirical measurement of the staring radar in urban clutter as a precursor to the integration with the Quantum oscillator.
