An Indoor Localization System for Mobile Robots Using an Active Infrared Positioning Sensor

Infrared (IR) sensors have been widely used as a distance measuring sensors to estimate the position of an object since they have short response time and high accura- cy. Therefore, we introduce the indoor localization system using an active infrared sensor and passive landmarks. However, there were several types of deviations from the actual values. We analyzed these errors and corrected them to develop the improved localization system.  Index Terms—infrared sensor, artificial landmark, multi- robot, indoor localization, intelligent space

Explicit Continuous Current–Voltage (<I>I</I>–<I>V</I>) Models for Fully-Depleted Surrounding-Gate MOSFETs (SGMOSFETs) with a Finite Doping Body

An analytical and continuous dc model for cylindrical doped surrounding-gate MOSFETs (SGMOSFETs) in the fully-depleted regime is presented. Starting from Poisson's equation, an implicit charge equation is derived approximately by a superposition principle with the exact channel potential and the charge equations in the depletion approximation. Also, a new explicit charge equation is derived from the implicit charge equation. The current equations without any charge-sheet approximation are based on the implicit and explicit charge control models, and both of them are valid for all the operation regions (linear, saturation, and subthreshold) and traces the transition between them without any fitting parameters. In the case of the SGMOSFETs with the fully-depleted condition, both of results simulated from the SGMOSFET models reproduce various 3D simulation results within 5% errors.

Electric-field control of field-free spin-orbit torque switching via laterally modulated Rashba effect in Pt/Co/AlOx structures

Spin-orbit coupling effect in structures with broken inversion symmetry, known as the Rashba effect, facilitates spin-orbit torques (SOTs) in heavy metal/ferromagnet/oxide structures, along with the spin Hall effect. Electric-field control of the Rashba effect is established for semiconductor interfaces, but it is challenging in structures involving metals owing to the screening effect. Here, we report that the Rashba effect in Pt/Co/AlOx structures is laterally modulated by electric voltages, generating out-of-plane SOTs. This enables field-free switching of the perpendicular magnetization and electrical control of the switching polarity. Changing the gate oxide reverses the sign of out-of-plane SOT while maintaining the same sign of voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy, which confirms the Rashba effect at the Co/oxide interface is a key ingredient of the electric-field modulation. The electrical control of SOT switching polarity in a reversible and non-volatile manner can be utilized for programmable logic operations in spintronic logic-in-memory devices.

Object Recognition Using Image Warping in an Intelligent Space

We propose a method to improve object recognition performance of a robot with an intelligent space system (iSpace). Existing SIFT-based object recognition is powerful, but it has still some limitations. Among limitations, we focus on degraded performance according to the viewpoint change. In order to improve the performance, we use appearance estimation of the object in the point of robot's view using image warping based on the robot pose and object pose. The proposed method is evaluated by experiments. 

Optical spin-orbit torque in heavy metal-ferromagnet heterostructures

Abstract Spin current generation through the spin-orbit interaction in non-magnetic materials lies at the heart of spintronics. When the generated spin current is injected to a ferromagnet, it produces spin-orbit torque and manipulates magnetization efficiently. Optically generated spin currents are expected to be superior to their electrical counterparts in terms of the manipulation speed. Here we report optical spin-orbit torques in heavy metal/ferromagnet heterostructures. The strong spin-orbit coupling of heavy metals induces photo-excited carriers to be spin-polarized, and their transport from heavy metals to ferromagnets induces a torque on magnetization. Our results demonstrate that heavy metals can generate spin-orbit torque not only electrically but also optically.

Dynamical responses of quantum dots by pulsed fields

Tunneling currents of a quantum dot induced by pulsed fields are investigated theoretically using time-dependent tunneling rates. Taking into account nonadiabatic effects, we present simple analytic expressions for tunneling currents, which can be used to study the evolution of the occupation probabilities in the quantum dot as well as extract system parameters governing tunneling measurements.

Transmission function and thermal conductivity of Si phononic crystals

We investigate phonon transport properties of Si phononic crystals by using an atomistic Green function method. By varying form factors such as thickness, orientation, and pore size of unit cells, mean-free path and associated thermal conductivity of phononic crystals are obtained. We present the empirical formula for thermal conductivity as a function of cell size and, by extrapolating results from it for realistic cell sizes, the thermal conductivity is compared with experimental ones. The formula is found to predict a nearly equal amount of the suppression in thermal conductivity to the experimental values, implying a feasible calculation method for predicting thermal properties of phononic crystals.
